Police divisional office, LG office, warehouses burnt as fire guts Onitsha Main market

By Chujs Eke

Early Tuesday morning inferno has ravaged a two storey building housing the Onitsha Main Market Police Division, Onitsha North Local Government market office in the market, warehouses, shops and wares estimated at several millions of naira.

The fire incident which started by 4 a.m., according to eyewitnesses, also gutted wares, furniture and other valuables inside the market.

It was gathered that the quantum of damages was so enormous as a result of delay by the fire service men to arrive on time to rescue the situation, despite the fact that the fire service men have their office also in the building and their truck in front of the building when the inferno started.

Contacted, the chairman of the market, Chief Innocent Ezeoha, confirmed that wares running into millions of naira were damaged, adding that if not for the intervention of fire servicemen from Awka, Asaba and good Samaritans, the fire would have escalated to the entire market.

“It was on a tip-off that I was told about the fire that started about 4.00am this morning and I have to rush. Damages have been done to the police block, Onitsha North Local Government market office, warehouses, shops, and even fire service office was touched by the time rescue teams came from the fire service Awka and Asaba, Delta State.

Contributing, his secretariy, comrade Barth I. Obiorah, lamented that as at the time of the inferno, fire truck was in front of the building but ineffective even as the fire service men have their office in the affected building.

“It took about two hours after the commencement of the inferno, for the fire service men from Awka, to arrive and that of Asaba came much late. The office of the fire service men, Onitsha North Local Government market office, Onitsha Main Market police block, shops and warehouses were touched.

“We lost a lot to the early morning fire, the entire wares and items turned to ashes in the building housing those offices. The Commissioner for Special Duties tried to assist in quenching the inferno.

“However, we thank God that it did not escalate because of efforts put in place by all and sundry. It is unfortunate that the fire service truck was in front of the building when the inferno started but was ineffective to function,” he lamented.

Igboland and its hidden tributaries to the Atlantic – By Aloy Ejimakor

It’s often said that a lie told so many times, if unchallenged, may – in the course of time and generations – begin to pass for the truth. One of such is the terrible lie and brazen propaganda, institutionally purveyed (against the Igbo) since the end of the Civil War, to the effect that Igboland is landlocked or has no access to the Atlantic Ocean.

Just recently, this vexatious lie became predominant in the wake of the ethnic-baiting of Igbos in Lagos following the dubious 2023 presidential and governorship elections. Igbos, a merchant race, are being taunted again and told to leave Lagos and its seaports and go back to their ‘landlocked’ homeland. In other words, Igbos are being told that they are trapped in Nigeria as if Nigeria is one hellish jail for them.

The purpose of this essay, therefore, is to rebut this fat lie with some simple historical, geographical and topographical evidence that are in plain view, if you care to dig into the archives or conduct some basic physical explorations of your own. In the same vein, those that mock the Igbo on this account might as well imbibe the truth and pedal back to reason and reality.

Suffice it to say that it is a profound tragedy that entire generations of the immediate post-Civil War Igbos never bordered to check but seemingly swallowed this brazen institutional falsehood, line, hook and sinker. They never reckoned that it is aimed at frustrating the merchant spirit of the Igbo. A few older Igbos that knew it to be false just didn’t care anymore, having been weighed down by the debacle of the Civil War fought by their generation.

What also helped this lie to persist to this day is that most people don’t take physical Geography (or even adventure) that serious anymore, otherwise they would have easily discovered that Abia, Imo and Anambra States have varying short-distance paths to the Atlantic through Imo, Azumiri, Niger and Urashi Rivers. Igbani island, a diaspora Igbo enclave, corrupted to Bonny by the British, is unarguable.

It’s not really rocket science, as you can easily confirm this if you know how to read Google Earth or you conquer your fear of swamp snakes and walk through these areas on foot. If you try, you will discover that there are many hardly explored waterways and slithering tributaries, including the remote reaches of Oguta Lake and Urashi rivers (at Oseakwa, Anambra State) that meandered through Igbo-delta wetlands to the Southeastern beginnings of the Atlantic waterfront or beachhead.

These rivers have varying lengths of short navigational paths to the Atlantic and in some cases, are far shorter, nautically (and even on footpath) than the Portharcourt, Calabar and Ibaka seaports are to their sides of the Atlantic. Many of these pathways, including particularly the ones from the outer reaches of Imo and Azumiri Rivers terminate at the Atlantic at no more than 15 to 30 Nautical miles to the beachhead. To put it in lay language, one nautical mile equals 1.8 kilometers. So, all you need is some old-fashioned dredging that the colonialists did without a whimper generations ago. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Thus, the contiguity of Southeast (not even the greater Igboland) to the Atlantic is nautically less in distance than the Atlantic is to the dredged seaports in Calabar, Onne, Ibaka, Lagos and Portharcourt. If you discount the territories unfairly excised from Igboland during State creations and the damnable boundary adjustments that followed, it will be far less.

To be sure, Ikwerre land or Igweocha which bears the greater portions of the Portharcourt seaport was dredged up to 50 miles to the Atlantic front through the Bonny River. Onne seaport was dredged up to 60 miles to the Atlantic and Calabar seaport was partially dredged some 45 nautical miles to the Atlantic. Ibaka seaport is about 30 nautical miles to the Atlantic and the Lagos seaports dredged up to about 50 nautical miles to the Atlantic. This is not to say that some dredging was not easier or harder than the other.

Compare all these to Obuaku in Abia State, which is only 25 nautical miles to the Atlantic from the confluence of Imo and Azumiri Rivers, of which Azumiri, on its separate merits, lies not more than 30 nautical miles to the Atlantic beachfront. The less obvious one is the little-known Oseakwa (Urashi) in Ihiala, Anambra State which is mere 18 nautical miles to the Atlantic, all with its 65 feet of natural depth, arguably incomparable to no other River in Nigeria.

Additionally, what is geopolitically known as Igboland today is far smaller than what it was and constitutionally supposed to be. As far back as 1856, William Balfour Baikie – one of the earliest and credible Geographers of ancient Nigeria, had this to say: “Igbo homeland, extends east and west, from the Old Kalabar river to the banks of the Kwora, Niger River, and possesses also some territory at Aboh, an Igbo clan, to the west-ward of the latter stream. On the north it borders on Igara, Igala and A’kpoto, and it is separated from the sea only by petty tribes, all of which trace their origin to this great race”. If you’re in doubt, google it.

But with that infamous post-War abandoned property policy and the egregious institutional injustices in the subsequent boundary adjustments, coupled with the widespread anti-Igbo gerrymandering, Igbos physically (and even psychologically) lost geopolitical hold of the delta lands that had vested in their ancestors for generations. It was such natural contiguity of Igboland to the Atlantic that enabled Igbo ancestors to behold the Atlantic Ocean and, in wonderment, they named it Oshimiri – The Great Sea or the Infinite Sea.

The post-Civil War psychological beat-down and gang-up against the Igbo got so bad and institutionalized to the extent that some of the descendants of these Igbo ancestors (nearest to the Atlantic and now geopolitically lying outside Southeast) are no longer sure whether they are Igbo or not. This is how the notion of Igboland being landlocked quickly gained traction and became a weapon used to mock Ndigbo and down their merchant spirit.

The most brazen injustice was in 1976 when the Justice Nasir Boundary Adjustment Commission made a deliberate business of carving out some core Igboland territories into some neighboring States of the South-South. But they didn’t quite make an absolute success of it. They (luckily for the Igbo) missed the southernmost Southeast lands that possess rivers and tributaries that meandered through slices of Igboid or Igbo-speaking South-South territories and terminated at the Atlantic.

For avoidance of doubt, there’s particularly the Obuaku confluence in Ukwa West (Abia State) that flows through greater Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State (which has slices of Igbo communities) before expanding out and washing into the near-reaches of the Atlantic. You can also reckon with the River Niger which remotely washed into the Atlantic through a vast network of hardly explored delta creeks and mangrove swamps that abut the Bight of Biafra, now officially corrupted to Bight of Bonny (that is: Igbani), after the Civil War. To be sure, Igbani or Bonny is Igbo, whether you deny it or not.

On a side note and in conclusion, it is pertinent to make it crystal clear that the persistent taunts, mockery and ‘ntoor’ that Ndigbo are hopelessly trapped in Nigeria because their native land is landlocked (Buhari called it a ‘dot’), coupled with the misguided refusal to build a seaport into core Igboland are some of the major factors that have justifiably agitated the average Igbo to the point of seeking an alternative to Nigeria.

Abia 2023: Not So Fast Hon. Commissioner, A Wolf Not Allowed to Cry Wolf!

By Ifeanyichukwu E. Uke

My attention was drawn to a press release, or should I say vituperation purportedly credited to Barrister Eze Chikamnayo, the out-going Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Abia State titled “WHY INEC WILL NOT COMMIT ILLEGALITY TO SATISFY ALEX OTTI ‘S DESPERATION FOR POWER” released on March 21, 2023.

The release came across as comical as it smacks of a final watery sound from a sinking ship. Frankly, I seriously doubt that a seasoned and poised learned man in the calibre of Barrister Chikamnayo would concoct such hasty verbiage that smacks of childishness and desperation. Now I totally understand what Adolfo Bioy Casares meant when he contended that “The Sea is endless when you are in a rowboat.” He was seriously talking about the level of sudden desperation that chokingly beheld the present and out-going administration and the party they represent.

I could not fathom such crass and audacious boldness with which the out-going commissioner used to cry wolf where in fact, they are the ones, as a matter of expedient desperation, working round the clock howbeit, aggressively like a hyena a hunter’s bullet hit at the scrotum that is scampering around in pain to hold on to its dear life, in an effort to subvert and distort the long awaited and final sigh of relief of the great men, women and youths of Abia whom the outgoing ruling party held on chokehold for over two decades and running. I hate to be a bearer of bad news to the out-going commissioner; but the heavens ordained it, the earth affirmed it, and the good people of Abia State approved it that Dr. Alexander Chioma Otti is the governor-elect and the incoming Executive Governor of Abia State.

No amount of fake vote manufacturing and intimidation tactics from his camp could possibly distort that. Governor-elect Dr. Otti is here to stay and govern, and govern he will do competently and abundantly well. If you and your cohorts are not down with that…you can relocate to Sambisa forest or any other evil forest of your choice…Abians do not care and will not notice your exit!

Have some dignity and sensitivity sir! Where did you draw the moral and ethical audacity to cry wolf to divert attention away from the actual perpetrators of malpractice – your camp? To add salt to an aching wound, you pulled this stunt of a press release to garner sympathy and empathy from the very pensioners, civil servants, and youths that this administration have callously denied their fundamental rights to quality life and living. Have conscience sir, have conscience!!

Permit me to sound this note of warning to all that are hell-bent on subverting the people’s voice and mandate through intimidation and vote manufacturing as I call the good people of Abia state to resist and reject them all and what they stand for. Enough is enough!!

It is already well with Ala Abia whether the devil and his numerous concubines like it or not and the odds notwithstanding.

Udo!!!

Power Rotation: Ebonyi To Legitimize Charter Of Equity

0

From Mba Nnenna- Abakaliki

Ebonyi State Government said it would draw a legally documented charter of equity to guide power rotation among the three Senatorial zones of the State.

Governor David Umahi gave the indication Monday during the State organized party to celebrate the victory of the All Progressives Congress and it’s governorship candidate, Francis Nwifuru.

Umahi expressed gratitude first to God, and all political stakeholders of the State for their belief and support for equity in the State.

He chided few stakeholders who failed to identify with the struggle, stressing that the State would continue to thrive without them.

The Governor emphasized that there was going to be a written charter to guarantee equity in the distribution of governorship slot among the component sections of the State.

“I want to thank all the people who stood for equity, fairness and justice.

“For those few leaders of the State who sat on the fence because their choice was not selected, we can do without them.

“We are going to draw a charter of equity as a written document to guide power rotation in the State…

“We will take it to the House of Assembly to pass as a law.

“But let it be known that no section of this State can make itself Governor without the others; clanishness cannot lead us anywhere.”

Speaking on Nwifuru as the next Governor, Umahi assured the people of the State that he would govern well.

He attributed Tinubu’s and Nwifuru’s victory to the grace of God, and flayed enemies of the Party and their candidates as people who arrogate undue powers and authority to themselves.

“I am grateful to God for the gift of today.

“Nwifuru is going to govern well, and for those who think that Nwifuru is less a governor, the unction of God is already upon him.

“Those who were thinking that Tinubu’s health will fail, go and see the man, he is still very strong.

“It is God who qualifies the unqualified.”

Governor Umahi stressed that going by his achievements across, it was not possible for him to lose any election in the State.

“Should I struggle to win elections in this State?

“There is no part of the State I have not touched.

Governor-elect, Nwifuru, in his speech promised not to dissapont the Governor and the State for the confidence reposed in him.

He called on his opponents from the other political parties who lost in the contest to join hands with him to secure the best governance for the State declaring that all his co-contestants were all winners.

Nwifuru also appreciated all Political leaders of the State, and his people, the Izhi clan for believing in him

“Your Excellency I will not disappoint you.

“We come on divine Mandate platform, and we shall work together to bring the best to our dear State

“I thank my fellow candidates from other Political parties.

“We are all winners”

The event which was well attended by Party supporters and political stakeholders across the State featured songs of praise to God, victory chants and speeches from notable stakeholders.

Tinubu will turn Nigeria into a Nazi state – Atiku

0

BY SULE TAHIR.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 25, 2023 poll, Atiku Abubakar, has said the country under Bola Ahmed Tinubu presidency, Nigeria will looked like a reminiscent of Germany under Adolph Hitler, where Jews were targeted and rights to vote and speak were suppressed.

Abubakar, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the governorship election in Lagos State, where thugs asked those who were not planning to vote for Tinubu’s party, All Progressives Congress, to return home was just a tip of what to expect under Tinubu’s administration.

He added that it was even more disheartening that the thugs working for Tinubu were profiling voters and beating up those who were of Igbo extraction and asking them to return home.

Again, Early Morning Fire Destroys Goods Worth Millions of Naira in Onitsha

0

By Izunna Okafor, Onitsha

Goods worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed in Onitsha Main Market, Anambra State, following a mysterious fire outbreak that erupted in the market in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to an eyewitness, the fire started at about 5.am at the popular Abada/Lace Line, where different types of clothing materials are sold.

It was gathered that the inferno first started in a building in the area, popularly known as the White House, which housed offices, halls and shops, before it speedily escalated to other shops in the area.

The eyewitness said the fire outbreak was discovered through thick smoke oozing out from the area, which woke and forced the residents and shop owners in the area to trace and rush to the scene, only to discover that the fire had already destroyed many things.

Although, it was gathered that the fire has been put off, this reporter’s efforts to get the reactions of the Anambra State Fire Chief, Mr. Martin Agbili, proved abortive, as his number was not connecting as at the time of this publication.

Bauchi: Gov. Bala Mohammed attributes victory to God’s will

0

Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, on Monday, attributed his re-election victory in the state to the will of God.

Addressing some jubilant fans, Mohammed also attributed his victory to a collective struggle of the common man whom, he said,, had placed the interest of the state above their personal interests.

“I am highly honoured by the mandate given to me by the electorate and I hereby pledge my commitment to consolidate on the success recorded during my first tenure.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on those who lost in the election to support my administration’s move towards transforming the state,” he said.

The governor, however, solicited for the forgiveness of those he might have offended unknowingly during his electioneering campaign, adding this is the time to face serious government business.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mohammed polled 525,280 votes to defeat his closest opponent, APC’s retired Air Marshal, Sadique Abubakar, who scored 432,272 votes.
