BUNI YADI, YOBE STATE — The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the tragic death of 17 police officers following a massive, coordinated terrorist assault on a premier military facility in the Northeast.
The high-casualty attack targeted the Nigerian Army Special Forces School located in Buni Yadi, within the Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The Midnight Ambush
According to an official statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, the insurgents struck the base under the cover of total darkness.
The heavily armed attackers, suspected to be fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), launched a synchronized multi-directional assault on the training facility.
The targeted police personnel were actively undergoing advanced counter-terrorism and tactical operations training at the institution when the base came under heavy fire.
Heavy Casualties and Repelled Fire
The trainee officers and stationed military personnel immediately engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle. While the joint forces successfully repelled the invaders from completely overrunning the facility, the cost of the defense was devastating.
Alongside the 17 fallen police officers, authorities confirmed that several personnel of the Nigerian Army also paid the ultimate price during the intense exchange of gunfire. Joint Task Force Northeast tactical teams under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) deployed overwhelming firepower to push the surviving insurgents back into the surrounding forests.
