Peter Obi Is Ungrateful, I Never Worked Against Him – Gov Wike

1

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says he did not work against Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 25 February elections.

The Governor said it is unfortunate that Mr. Obi claimed he stood against him during last month’s presidential election.

He stated this during a media chat with journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Wednesday.

Wike who described Obi as ungrateful, said he never told Rivers people to vote for the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Governor jettisoned claims that he rigged Rivers State polls to favour his preferred candidates at the Presidential, National Assembly, governorship and House of Assembly elections.

According to him, Rivers voted for the unity of Nigeria by voting for Tinubu at the presidential poll.

He stressed that his goal from the outset of the presidential election was there- the president must come from the South.

He added that he never campaigned against Peter Obi.

“I never told Rivers people to vote for Bola Ahmed Tinubu but for the Unity of Nigeria. As far as Rivers State is concerned, it was a power shift to the South.

“And there are two candidates from the South, Tinubu and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, so If the majority of Rivers People decided to vote for Tinubu and others for Peter Obi, that tells you the decision of the citizens.

“How can you talk about me rigging the election? I don’t work as ad-hoc staff for Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, so I am not in the place to rig elections for anybody. When you have INEC’s materials, you can talk about rigging.

“But I take exemption to Peter Obi’s comment that I came out against him, people are not being sincere and appreciative. In 2019, I was among the people who chose Peter Obi for Atiku Abubakar.

“I was faulted for the choice, people like Ike Ekweremadu and my friend, the Governor of Ebonyi State and Pius Ayim. Every blame was on me; that why would I be the one to choose for the South East?

“Did he come out to say I supported him?

“I told Nigerians I will support a South candidate in the Presidential Election.

“When Peter Obi says I was against him, it is unfortunate because nobody ever told me that I campaigned against him. It is incorrect to say I was against him.

“I told my people to support a southern candidate, which they did; the first position in Rivers State during the poll was a south candidate, same with the second position.”

Tinubu polled 231,591 in Rivers State against Peter Obi’s 175,071 votes, in the 25 February presidential election.

At the end of the collation across States, Tinubu polled 8,794,726 to win the presidential election.

AMAECHI ON INEC CHAIRMAN: Shut Your Trap and Allow Those Mentioned to Refute the Claim ~ Eze Cautions APC Former Vice Chair, Hilliard Etta

Erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka has cautioned former South-South Zonal Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Ntufam Hilliard Eta, to channel his acidic vitriols to a direction far from the former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi.

Recall that Hilliard Eta, two days ago, berated former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his claim that the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Camp, influenced the appointment of the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stating that there was no iota of truth in the claim by Amaechi, who served two-term governor of Rivers State.

In a statement made available to media houses, Eze reminded Eta who is desperately shopping for relevance after his expulsion from the party for anti-progressive activities, that upbraiding Amaechi will not bring him back to the political playground and counseled him to deploy his acidic mordancy to a direction suitable enough to help him wriggle his way out of political relegation.

The party Chief said it is unfortunate to learn that deriding Amaechi has turned into a new discovery by worthless and used politicians like Eta to boost themselves to relevance, noting that a lot of them have cashed-in on the trend.

Eze called on Eta to shut his trap, stressing that the comment credited to former Governor Amaechi was very direct and unambiguous and those whose names were mentioned should disclaim the facts and not busybodies like the expelled APC Zonal Vice Chair who is struggling to secure a space in the system by arrogating to himself the post of an unofficial spokesperson.

He said Amaechi speaks with facts and his revelation s very valid given the desperate insistence of the electoral umpire to undermine extant laws guiding the conduct of elections in the country which resulted to the sham that are receiving global condemnation.

Eze counselled Mr. Etta to be mindful of his unguided utterances henceforth pertaining to APC particularly the Rivers State Chapter to avoid being exposed of his inglorious, divisive and devious roles he played with Senator Magnus Abe, Gov. Nyesom Wike, Adams Oshiomhole and others for the present state of the Rivers State Chapter of the party. If I hear any further comment from him in this regard, he will know of his irrelevance in the scheme of things politically in this country.

Eze reassured Mr. Etta and his sponsors that their efforts and plots to ruin the political future of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi will not be actualised no matter the odds as God who have kept him this far will continue to guide and protect him accordingly

Igbo group wants Sanwo-Olu, traditional rulers to end disunity in Lagos

0

The Umuigbo Youth Progressive Association has urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and traditional institutions to do more to secure lives and property of Igbos and non-Igbos residents of Lagos State.

The association made the plea in a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, National Secretary and National Patron, Rev. Gabriel Emmanuel, Ms Gladys Ogoke, and Chief Mbazuruike Amaechi respectively on Friday in Lagos.

In the statement entitled: “Threats and Attacks on Igbos and Non- Igbos Resident in Lagos State”, the group described as totally unacceptable the alleged attacks in the state.

“The Umuigbo Youth Progressive Association believe in One Nigeria and also believe that every Nigerian citizen is free to live, work and do his or her legitimate business in any part of the country without being terrorised or subjected to threats of any kind.

“To this effect, we hereby call on the Governor of Lagos State and traditional rulers to publicly condemn these attacks and put a stop to it,” it stated.

According to the statement, the attacks are deliberately promoted for political gains without thinking of the long term consequences on the peaceful co-existence of residents and the people of the state.

“We are waiting for a response from Lagos State Government guaranteeing the security of the lives and properties of everyone resident in Lagos State irrespective of their tribes or religion,” it stated.

The statement urged the state government to continue to protect residents of the state regardless of tongues and ethnic background.

Appeal Court dismisses PDP suit against Tinubu, Shettima over alleged double nomination

0

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, Friday evening, dismissed an appeal by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seeking the disqualification of Sen. Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate, All Progressives Congress (APC), and his vice, Kashim Shettima, in the Feb. 25 election.

A three-member panel headed by Justice James Abundaga, in a unanimous judgment, held that the PDP failed to establish that its had locus standi to institute the case.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP, in an appeal marked: CA/ABJ/CV/108/2023, had prayed the appellate court to reverse the Jan. 13 judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja which dismissed its suit on the grounds that the PDP lacked locus standi to have instituted the suit.

While the PDP was the appellant, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC, Tinubu and Shettima were respondents in the appeal.

The PDP had, in the suit filed on July 28, 2022, challenged the validity of the Tinubu/Shettima ticket for the 2023 presidential election.

It argued that Shettima’s nomination as the running mate was in breach of the provisions of Sections 29(1), 33, 35 and 84{1)}(2)} of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), claiming that Shettima had double nominations.

It claimed that as at the time Shettima was nominated as vice presidential candidate, he had not resigned or withdrawn his nomination as candidate for Borno Central Senatorial poll.

The party argued that Shettima’s nomination as a vice-presidential candidate as well as the candidate for the Borno Central Senatorial seat contravened the law.

The PDP, which sought an order disqualifying the APC, Tinubu and Shettima from contesting the presidential election scheduled for Feb. 25, equally prayed the court for an order nullifying their candidacy.

It further prayed the court for an order compelling INEC to remove their names from its list of nominated or sponsored candidates eligible to contest the election.

The defendants, in their preliminary objection, urged the court to dismiss the suit for want of jurisdiction.

They contended that the plaintiff lacked the locus standi to institute the case, which invariably challenged APC’s decision and its nomination of candidates for the election, which were within the confines of the party’s internal affairs and thus, non-justiciable.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Abundaga, who agreed with the submissions of lawyers to the respondents, including Thomas Ojo of Lateef Fagbemi and Co, described the PDP as a busy body, who dabbled into issues that were internal affairs of the APC.

Justice Abundaga held that the trial court was right to have held that the PDP failed to establish its locus standi.

“The appellant, having failed to disclose its locus standi, this appeal fails and it is hereby dismissed,” he said and proceeded to affirm the judgment of the FHC.

The judge also awarded N5 million cost against the appellant’s lawyer, J. O. Olotu.

AFCON Qualifier: Eagles lose 0-1 to Guinea Bissau in Abuja

0

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday lost 0-1 to Guinea Bissau in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The Eagles dominated the encounter in the opening minutes, but they failed to make any positive impact as a result of poor finishing.

The visitors got their goal through a counter-attack in the 29th minute through Mama Balde who plies his football trade with Troyes FC of France.

He broke free to face goalkeeper Francis Uzoho who could not stop him as he slipped a low shot past him.

The Eagles’ immediate effort to draw level was in the 33rd minute, when Ademola Lookman freed Victor Osimhen with a pass, but the Napoli FC striker could not beat the visiting goalkeeper.

The Djurtus of Guinea Bissau came close to scoring another goal in the 35th minute after beating Eagles defenders but the ball eventually missed target.

In the second half, substitute Moses Simon shot wide even when directly in front, as the Eagles struggled to draw level in the 55th minute.

The Super Eagles further suffered misfortune when Akpoguma Ufuoma was injured and was substituted with Semilogo Ajayi.

Osimhen continued to torment the visitors’ defence but the goalkeeper proved to be Nigeria’s nemesis.

The result ensured Nigeria remained on six points after three games, while Guinea Bissau are on seven points.

The reverse fixture will hold in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Guinea Bissau have Morocco as home venue for now as they do not have a Confederation of African Football (CAF)-approved playing turf.

The Super Eagles had won their opening two games in the qualifiers, against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe.

Cote d’Ivoire will host the 2023 AFCON between January and February 2024 for the second time, after staging the 1984 edition.

Alleged N754.8m Fraud: Court Rules on Ex-NIMASA D-G, Akpobolokemi’s No-case Submissions May 5

0

Justice R.I.B Adebiyi of the State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday, March 24, 2023, adjourned till May 5, 2023 for ruling on the No-case submission filed by the duo of Patrick Akpobolokemi, a former Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, and Ezekiel Bala Agaba, a former Executive Director, NIMASA, who are standing trial for an alleged N754.8 million fraud.

Akpobolokemi and Agaba were initially charged alongside Governor Juan, Vincent Udoye, Ekene Nwakuche, Adegboyega Olopoenia and a company, Gama Marine Nigeria Ltd., before the charge was amended to involve only both of them.

At today’s proceedings, the defence counsel, Collins Ogbonna and E.D. Onyeke, separately, adopted the final written addresses of their clients and also urged the court to uphold the no-case submissions of their clients.

They further urged the court to hold that the prosecution had not made a prima facie case against the defendants that would necessitate them taking to the dock to defend themselves.

The prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, while adumbrating on the response of the prosecution, urged the court to rely on the evidence placed before it by the prosecution as well as the testimony of the 12 witnesses called.

Oyedepo also urged the court to dismiss the no-case submissions of the defendants as lacking in merit. “The evidence before my lord establishes the essential ingredients of conspiracy, stealing and forgery,” he said, adding that even “the second defendant admitted the essential ingredients of the offence: the conspiracy to steal and the conspiracy to forge document.”

He added: “His statement contains a confession, which contains no further documentary evidence for your lordship to make a finding of facts, substantively.”

He, therefore, urged the court to dismiss the no-case submissions as lacking in merit, and to order the defendants to open their defence as “they have a lot of explanations to make.”

Justice Adebiyi adjourned till Friday, May 5, 2023 for ruling.

Otti will do well because of his level of preparedness – Okwuonu

0

By Okechukwu Keshi Ukegbu

Chieftain of the Labour Party in Abia State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Okwuonu has expressed strong optimism that the Government- elect, Dr Alex Chioma Otti will do well because he is prepared for the position.

” There is no atom of doubt about the performance of Dr Otti because he is adequately prepared for the job. When a man is adequately prepared for a task, there is no room to bother if he is going to deliver or not,” he said.

Okwuonu, who is the State Deputy Director of Alex Otti Campaign Council, said that the campaign team toured round the state and this provided them the opportunity to appreciate the problems bedeviling the state

According to him, Otti as a technocrat will assemble like minds the change the narratives in the areas of infrastructure, health, economy agriculture, among other areas that require intervention.

Okwuonu said that the spontaneous joy that greeted Otti’s victory is a strong signal that God ordained his ambition to rule Abia State.

He said”like it is often said that’destiny delayed is not destiny denied, God does His things at the right time to prove a purpose”.

” I believe strongly that as a seasoned technocrat that he(Otti) is going to deliver on the mandate and the expectations of Abia people”

He added that Otti’s manifesto is a strong pointer that better days are ahead for Abia indigenes.

Okwuonu therefore called on all Abians to lend the necessary support to the Governor-elect to ensure a resounding success in his administration.

Enugu Polls: We’ll meet @ Tribunal, PDP tells Nweke, Edeoga

0

The people of Enugu State rose above clan, religious denomination, and party divides to elect Dr. Peter Mbah as their governor because they see him as the best-prepared for the job, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Council (PDP-CC) said on Friday.

The organisation said if any party should complain bitterly, it was indeed the PDP, which was manifestly rigged out in several Local Government Areas (LGAs) where the election was militarized against their supporters, despite being the ruling party.

The PDP-CC was reacting to the insinuations by the governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Frank Nweke, and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Chijioke Edeoga, trying to rubbish the outcome of the 2023 governorship election in Enugu State, saying, “we will meet at the tribunal if they so choose.”

The PDP-CC stated these in a statement by its Spokesperson, Nana Ogbodo issued in Enugu but obtained by journalists in Abuja.

The PDP said it was instructive that neither Nweke nor Edeoga uttered a word of condemnation when LP’s Senator-elect for Enugu North Senatorial District, Chief Okey Ezea, openly declared the governorship election a “do-or-die” affair in a viral video and also urged the youths to prepare themselves for the planned onslaught against the PDP.

The statement reads, “Recall that when Frank Nweke Jr. and Hon. Chijioke Edeoga leveled allegations of planned compromise of the governorship election against the PDP, INEC, and other vital institutions of democracy ahead of the March 18 polls, we were quick to point out that they were not only making excuses for their expected failure at the polls, but also indirectly letting Ndi Enugu into the mayhem they planned to unleash on Enugu people, having failed to condemn the statement by the LP party chieftain and Senator-elect, Chief Okey Ezea designating the March 18 governorship election as a ‘do-or-die” affair.

“We also told you that Nweke, who has been a part and parcel of the PDP since 1999 and until last year, serving as Chief of Staff to former governor Chimaroke Nnamani and Minister in three ministries only left to APGA on the erroneous permutation that PDP’s governorship ticket would go outside Nkanu land so he could harvest from the expected protest votes of the people.

“We can authoritatively inform you that Nweke will also be on his way out of APGA after he must have lost again at the Election Petition Tribunal, as he equivocated during today’s press conference when he was asked if he would stay and build APGA into a viable political party in the state.

“He did not disappoint when he characteristically took to the media to deprecate the outcome of the governorship polls, which he was bound to lose in the first place. It is noteworthy that he only garnered 1,609 votes in his native Nkanu West LGA to lose scandalously to PDP, which polled 8,382 votes.

“It is equally instructive that after all the media vituperations, Nweke only managed to poll a meagre 17,983 votes across the state as against 160,895 votes polled by PDP’s Dr. Ndubuisi Mbah.

“Therefore, we wonder how a man, who scored only 1,609 votes in his LGA, a man rejected by his own people, and also running on a party without structures in the state intended to win a gubernatorial election against the PDP that is not only on ground, but equally parading by far the best candidate with proven capacity, competency, character, track records as well as the most detailed, viable, and ambitious manifesto.

“Meanwhile, we challenge Nweke to swear that the 2023 governorship election was not far better than the massively rigged 2007 election, which he stoutly defended and engaged in war of words with the leader of the US election observer’s mission, Madeleine Albright and former President of the Senate, Senator Ken Nnamani. He not only accused Nnamani of plotting an Interim National Government (ING), but also claimed that those complaining about the election were coup plotters.

“Nigerians would recall that even the main beneficiary of the 2007 heist that Nweke vehemently defended, former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, was later to openly admit to the world that the polls were flawed.

“Edeoga knows very well that his false claims of over-voting in Nkanu East LGA is a deliberate fabrication that has been put to rest by INEC. He only regurgitates the fallacy to mislead unsuspecting Nigerians the usual Enugu LP’s penchant for propaganda.

“We are aware and have it on record, all the atrocious rigging and militarisation of the election against our supporters in most parts of Enugu North Senatorial Zone and Isi-Uzo LGA. We have ample evidences on how the PDP was manifestly rigged out in Nsukka LGA, Udenu, Igboeze North, Igbo-Eze South, Igbo-Etiti, Isi Uzo, etc. It will also be good if Edeoga tells the world how the about 17,000 votes it recorded in Nsukka LGA suddenly became over 30,000 votes with a phantom over 45,000 voter turnout.

“We commend and align with our governorship candidate, Dr. Peter Mbah’s in the olive branch that he extended to the opposition candidates. We applaud his statesmanship. However, we will meet them at the tribunal if they so choose. It is actually the right place to undress their hypocrisy, violent tendencies, and misuse of security agencies and vital intuitions of democracy for the world to see”.

The PDP, however, enjoined them to accept the olive and be part of the new Enugu Sate that Mbah was rearing to build.

“These are members of the PDP that only wanted to go to the Lion Building in other vehicles. East, West, North and South, there is no place like home and we are ever ready to welcome them back whenever they return. Even the prodigal son, who squandered his father’s wealth and abused his privileges was not rejected by his father”, the PDP-CC stated.

The President Never Said He Won’t Hand Over To Elected Tinubu

0

The Presidency wishes to denounce as outrageous and fake, and condemns the fake news brigade for attributing a false quote to President Muhammadu Buhari and circulating it.

How can you vigorously campaign for somebody, vote for him and then say you won’t hand over to him? This beggars belief.

The situation of the Sahara Reporters is pretty pathetic since their ownership is politically partisan in today’s politics, in fact a loser in the presidential election. Instead of talking about issues, they repeatedly sell lies in the hope that people believe them as truth.

The government is already in transition phase. The Transition Committee, made up of representatives of the outgoing administration and the incoming one is meeting on an almost daily basis planning the handover to the Tinubu/Shettima administration. Thirteen committees as offshoots of the main committee, some, to arrange military drills and pulling out of President Buhari, are either all at work or soon to be. So far, everything is going very well and there is no indication of any hitches.

As for the President, the Daura community has begun their preparations to receive their son back after the successful administration of the country for two terms of eight years. He, for his part, is eager to return home to enjoy his retirement.

Thanks, Ndi Enugu, for Voting Overwhelmingly for Change – Chijioke Edeoga

0

1. I would like to thank, from the depths of my heart, Ndi Enugu State for voting overwhelmingly for transformational change in the two elections held on February 25 and March 18, 2023, in our dear State. You stood strongly with the Labour Party. And you have continued to be in solidarity with our transformational political party to this day, despite the determination of a handful of inelegant elements to change the course of history.

2. In the Presidential election, you gave the Labour Party 428,640 out of the 468,891 votes cast, or 88.7 per cent of the votes. In the same election, your total support made our party win seven out of the eight federal constituencies in our State. The rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could win only one seat. In the Senate election, your unflinching support saw the Labour Party win the Enugu North district with 104,492 votes; the incumbent State Governor, who is of the PDP, received only 46,948 votes, as he was well-beaten in his polling unit and ward by the Labour Party candidate. As expected, the Labour Party also won convincingly in the Enugu East senatorial race, which was rescheduled to March 18, 2023, following the assassination on Wednesday, February 22, of the Labour candidate, Chief Oyibo Victor Chukwu. The good people of Enugu East gave Sir Kelvin Chukwu, a younger brother of the assassinated Chukwu, 69,136 votes, as against the 48,701 votes scored by his closest rival, Dr Chimaraoke Nnamani of the PDP, a former Enugu State two-term Governor and a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. All this took place because you want a change in Enugu State.

3. The wind of change continued to blow across the State when you went to the polls on Saturday, March 18, 2023, to participate in the Gubernatorial and House of Assembly polls. You voted clearly for Labour Party candidates in the legislative election because you want a House of Assembly to work harmoniously with the Labour Governor of Enugu State. Consequently, 14 out of the 24 seats in the Assembly went to the Labour Party, with another one still on the way. In other words, you gave the Labour Party a two-thirds majority in the legislative vote to enable the Labour Governor to deliver the goods effectively and efficiently to the Enugu people.

4. Your strong desire for change made you vote overwhelmingly for me as the Labour Party candidate in the gubernatorial election. By the night of Saturday, March 18, the result from every Local Government Area (LGA) in the State was already well known, and it was clear that I had been given the mandate to lead Enugu State in a new direction in the next four years. This mandate is a sacred trust. It is not negotiable.

5. The desperation of a coterie of politicians in the State working in cahoots with a handful of compromised Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) officers to toy with the destiny of a great people cannot succeed. These persons cannot be allowed to subvert the will of millions of our people. The people’s will is supreme. Our team of dedicated and competent lawyers has been instructed to take the appropriate legal steps to restore the people’s mandate to me and the Labour Party.

6. The Labour Party has been the subject of vicious attacks by cowardly and reactionary forces in different parts of the country simply because it represents change, a new social order. Its members, candidates and supporters have been murdered in different states. Its supporters have been demonised, maimed and disenfranchised in different states, and their businesses incinerated just because they believe a new Nigeria is possible. It took INEC a whole four days to engage in creative vote allocation before declaring the so-called result of the governorship election which the whole of Enugu State and the entire nation have rejected as one man. INEC engaged in sheer sacrilege.

7. I plead with Ndi Enugu to go about their normal business. We have great confidence in the Nigerian judiciary. The judiciary has restored stolen mandates in a number of instances and has consequently proved to be the last hope of the people. I thank Nigerians from different walks of life for their tremendous support. I will ever remain indebted to the Enugu people for their solidarity. There are not enough words to thank the Nigerian Labour Congress, the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Medical Association, the business community, the market associations, the religious community, students, the academic community, civil service members, and, of course, my primary constituency which is the media, as well as individuals too numerous to mention here; they are committed to the truth, the common good and justice. My confidence in the Nigerian possibility is once again rekindled.

God bless Enugu State.

God bless Nigeria.

The Rt Hon Chijioke Edeoga

Labour Party Gubernatorial Candidate

Enugu State
