UNESCO Honors Gaza Journalists – On How Israel Inadvertently Empowered Palestinian Media

0

By Ramzy Baroud

By granting its 2024 World Press Freedom Prize to Palestinian journalists covering the Israeli war on Gaza, UNESCO has acknowledged a historic truth.

Even if the decision to name Gaza’s journalists as laureates of its prestigious award was partly motivated by the courage of these journalists, the truth is that no one in the world deserved such recognition as those covering the genocidal war in Gaza.

“As humanity, we have a huge debt to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression,” Mauricio Weibel, Chair of the International Jury of media professionals, which made the recommendation for the award, truthfully described the courage of Gaza’s journalists.

Courage is an admirable quality, especially when many journalists in Gaza knew that Israel was seeking to kill them, often along with their families, to ensure the horror of the war remains hidden from view, at worst, or contested as if a matter of opinion, at best.

Between October 7, 2023, and May 6, 2024, 142 Palestinian journalists in Gaza were killed in Israeli bombardment, assassinated or executed. It is higher than the total number of journalists killed in World War II and the Vietnam wars combined.

This number does not include many bloggers, intellectuals and writers who did not have professional media credentials, and also excludes the many family members who were often killed along with the targeted journalists.

But there is more to Gaza’s journalists than bravery.

Whenever Israel launches a war on Gaza, it almost always denies access to international media professionals from entering the Strip. This go-to strategy is meant to ensure the story of the crimes that the Israeli army is about to commit goes unreported.

The strategy paid dividends in the so-called Cast Lead Operation in 2008-9. The true degree of the atrocities carried out in Gaza during that war, which resulted in the killing of over 1,400 Palestinians, was largely known when the war was over. By then, Israel had concluded its major military operation, and corporate mainstream western media had done a splendid job in ensuring the dominance of the Israeli political discourse on the war.

Israel’s behavior since that war remained unchanged: barring international journalists, placing a gag order on Israeli journalists and killing Palestinian journalists who dared cover the story.

The August 2014 war on Gaza was one of the bloodiest for journalists. It lasted for 18 days and cost the lives of 17 journalists. Palestinian journalists, however, remained committed to their story. When one fell, ten seemed to take his place.

Occupied Palestine has always been one of the most dangerous places to be a journalist. The Palestinian Journalists’ Union reported that between 2000 – the start of the Second Palestinian Uprising and May 11, 2022 – the day of the Israeli murder of the iconic Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, 55 journalists were killed at the hands of the Israeli army.

The number might not seem too high if compared to the latest onslaught in Gaza, but, per international standards, it was a terrifying figure, based on an equally disturbing logic: killing the storyteller as the quickest way of killing the story itself.

For decades, Israel, an occupying power, has managed to depict itself as a victim in a state of self-defense. Without any critical voices in mainstream media, many around the world believed Israel’s deceiving discourse on terrorism, security and self-defense.

The only obstacle that stood between the truth and Israel’s engineered version of the truth are honest journalists – thus, the ongoing war on the media.

What Israel did not anticipate, however, is that by blocking international media access to Gaza, it would inadvertently empower Palestinian journalists to take charge of their own narrative.

“Interpretations depend very much on who the interpreter is, who he or she is addressing, what his or her purpose is, at what historical moment the interpretation takes place,” late Palestinian intellectual Edward Said wrote in ‘Covering Islam.’

Like any other form of intellectual interpretation, journalism becomes subjected to the same rule of positionality in academia, as in the relationship between the identity of the researcher and the social or political context of the subject matter.

Palestinian journalists in Gaza are themselves the story and the storytellers. Their success or failure to convey the story with all its factual and emotional details could make the difference between the continuation or the end of the Israeli genocide.

Though the war is yet to end, the Gaza journalists have already proven to be deserving of all the honors and accolades, not only because of their courage, but because of what we actually know about the war, despite the numerous and seemingly insurmountable obstacles created by Israel and its allies.

Most people all over the world want the war to end. But how did they acquire the needed information that made them realize the extent of horror in Gaza? Certainly not through Israel’s cheerleaders in mainstream media, but through Palestinian journalists on the ground who are using every means and every channel available to them to tell the story.

These journalists include self-taught youngsters, like 9-year-old Lama Jamous, who wore a press vest and conveyed the details of life in displacement camps in southern Gaza, reporting from Nasser Hospital and many other places with poise and elegance.

As for the accuracy of information provided by these journalists, they were certainly professional enough to be verified by numerous human rights groups, medical and legal associations and millions of people around the world who used them to build a case against the Israeli war. Indeed, all we know about the war – the death toll, the degree of destruction, the daily human suffering, the mass graves, the famine, and much more – is possible because of these Gaza-based reporters.

The success, and the sacrifices of Gaza journalists should serve as a model for journalists and journalism around the world, as an example of how news about war crimes, sieges and human suffering in all its forms should be conveyed.

Outrage, As Catholic Priest Tells Congregation That Jesus Died with Erection

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The media space has been agog recently over the comment of a Catholic Church priest, Rev. Fr. Thomas McHale, who claimed that Jesus Christ died with an erection during his crucifixion on the Cross of Calvary.

The assertion, which he made during a sermon, was also said to have left the congregation and parishioners stunned, with many describing it as vulgar, shocking and inappropriate.

The parishioners were also said to have lodged a compliant and report to the church authority about the comment, with many verbally calling for the priest’s dismissal.

“He told people Jesus died with an erection. The church was shocked. There were young families there,” a parishioner told newsmen.

Confirming the development to newsmen, the Spokesman of the Hexham & Newcastle Diocese (under which Fr. McHale serves as priest), attested that a complaint regarding that was received and investigated according to the protocol of the Diocese, after which it was found that the cleric actually made the comment.

Court Yet To Decide FUTO, Host Communities’ Suit

0

The Sole Attorney of the host communities of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, (FUTO), Estate Surveyor Sam Anokam says the substantive suit filed by the host communities against FUTO is yet to be decided.

He disclosed this on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo state capital, while reacting to the judgement by Justice K. k. Orjiakor of Imo State High Court to the effect that FUTO had floored Anokam and others in a six-year-old land grabbing case between the institution and the land owners.

He said, “The way the story came that I have been defeated I say the substantive suit in the matter has not been heard at all. So there is no defeat yet.”

Chronicling what has transpired between the host communities and FUTO since the former made him their spokesman over their land in 2018, Anokam maintained that “an acquisition of land cannot be concluded unless compensation is paid.”

He stated that the flaw that led to the court judgement had been rectified within two days, signalling the continuation of the matter.

The surveyor noted, “So to begin to rejoice over the issue of the court striking out our suit because of the fact that we did not list the names of the plaintiffs shows there is mediocrity in the institution’s administration.
It was on the 28th April that the ruling came. On the 30th April we went back to court listing the names of the plaintiffs.

“The court ruled on preliminary objections that we have no cause of action.
“Our cause of action is you have been destroying our things without compensation,” he stated.

While vowing to follow due process to conclude the matter, the landowners’ advocate explained that he has been steadfast in carryng out his advocacy.

He maintained that it is FUTO that has been reneging on the series of agreements reached with either the host communities or with the Federal Government on the way forward.

He gave details of the processes both the landlords and the institution had gone through cutting across many administrations in the state, in the quest to settle the matter amicably, but FUTO reneged in all of them.

‘I have never encouraged our people to go on rampage; use violence, attack anybody. No! No! No! This matter is simple. It has even been resolved. But there has been propaganda to create an impression that it is not proper.

“Now, the Federal Government says it wants to ensure peace by expressing readiness to implement the agreement, to the extent that the host communities have accepted to withdraw their suit in court and I accepted too.”

He, therefore, maintained that “Sam Anokam has not been defeated, floored, or disgraced in the matter in court between the host communities of FUTO, that I have acted as Attorney to FUTO communities.”

He advised that leaders in the region must make the people the point of convergence in governance, noting that the essence of democracy is lost when the people are not the focal point.

The President emphasized that democratic governance, democratic values, and constitutional order are sacrosanct and must be protected.

He also stated that critical institutions and precepts, like the judiciary and the rule of law, must be respected and observed for the sustenance of democracy.

“Constitutional democracy is what Senegal proved to the rest of the world and Africa. It is a joy to have you here; to meet the hope and aspiration of our youths. You fit in perfectly well.

“A critical time it is in the history of constitutional democracy, particularly in West Africa. What you have embarked upon, a struggle couched in freedom, is remarkable,” President Tinubu said.

The President described Nigeria and Senegal as brotherly nations, recounting both countries’ long history of cooperation.

“We are brothers. We have shared interest in democracy. To make democracy sustainable in the interest of our people, we definitely must work hard.

“I am glad that you are a shining example of patience, perseverance, and commitment to democratic values.

“We must partner to make our people the focus of our democratic commitment. Your belief in the sovereignty of Africa is shared by all of us. But how can we work for our people and make them the focus of our democracy if we are violating the rule of law and promoting unconstitutional takeover of government?

“As the Chairman of ECOWAS, I am inviting you to collaborate and meet those other brothers. To persuade them to come back to the fold.

“We will continue to work together. We share good backgrounds, and we will continue to embrace and promote democratic governance. We must be able to partner and build the freedom we believe in – in economic growth, development, and other spheres of governance. It is left for us to provide assurance to our people and walk our talk.

“We must defeat human trafficking; we must defeat terrorism, banditry, and poverty in our society. That must be our focus and commitment,” President Tinubu said.

In his remarks, President Faye acknowledged Nigeria and Senegal’s shared values, ideals, and challenges, emphasizing that both nations have always had good relations since the 1960s.

“The good relations we have and the relations between our private sectors should be beneficial to our countries,” he said.

The Senegalese President called for the reactivation of the Nigeria-Senegal joint commission to strengthen bilateral relations across the areas of diplomacy, trade, and other spheres.

Speaking on ECOWAS, President Faye said that with President Tinubu’s wisdom and experience, relations among member states can be strengthened and bolstered for the advancement of the community.

“ECOWAS is the beacon of successful regional integration in Africa and globally. It is something we owe to the founding fathers of the community, and I have no doubt that you want to continue this legacy of integration. The union is going through a rough patch, but not everything is lost.

“I know I can rely on your wisdom and experience, as the leader of this great African nation, and the more recent example of Senegal; so that together, hand in hand, we can grow together, and that we can discuss with our brothers and convince them to come back into the fold. To come back and share our common democratic values and what we stand for.

“Your wisdom and your democratic values should be an asset to that vision, and my youth and determination can also be an asset. If we come together, with all these assets and advantages, I am convinced we can open a window of opportunity to discuss.

“United, we are stronger. Faced with common challenges, such as human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and all other challenges, we need to show resolve to confront these challenges so that economically we can thrive and satisfy the wishes of our people,” the Senegalese President said.

Igbo Entrepreneur in Ireland Laments Frustration, Business Backwardness (Video)

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Emeka Ikwukeme, an Nigerian/Igbo man and Founder/CEO of the Parcel King — a Courier Service & Parcel Delivery Company in Ireland, has shared a poignant account of his challenges, shedding light on the frustrations and setbacks plaguing his business endeavors in the country.

With candor and resilience, the Nigerian-born entrepreneur, in a video that is currently trending on the social media, detailed the turbulent journey that has unfolded since the inception of his company in 2019.

He lamented that what began as a promising venture swiftly spiraled into a tumultuous battle for survival, marred by inexplicable setbacks and financial turmoil.

“Every day is a struggle,” he lamented, recounting the uphill battle he faced after the removal of his insurance in 2022, a move that left him vulnerable and grappling for stability. Despite his relentless efforts, his fleet of over 100 vehicles dwindled, with many either impounded or rendered inoperable.

According to Mr. Ikwukeme, Parcel King experienced rapid growth initially, buoyed by a promising market landscape. However, the tide turned in 2021, marking the onset of relentless hardships and a relentless fight for survival.

The entrepreneur went further to recount a series of setbacks that have rocked his enterprise, with perhaps the most devastating blow being that of the removal of his insurance coverage in 2022. Stripped of this crucial safeguard, he found himself vulnerable and thrust into a precarious position, fighting to keep his fleet operational.

In a gut-wrenching revelation, Mr. Ikwukeme also disclosed how fraudulent activities further compounded his woes, particularly his ill-fated acquisition of Nova Point. The fallout from this transaction resulted in a staggering loss of €350,000 to fraudsters and the deterioration of numerous vehicles, leaving him grappling with financial ruin and the wreckage of broken dreams.

“They took everything from me,” he lamented, gesturing towards the battered remnants of his once-thriving fleet. Despite his unwavering resolve to persevere, he has been forced to confront threats to his personal safety, prompting his immediate relocation of his family to another country, to ensure their safety and well-being.

Asserting his innocence and steadfast work ethic, Mr. Ikwukeme vehemently denied any allegations of wrongdoing, emphasizing his relentless pursuit of success through honest means. Yet, he finds himself ensnared in a web of injustice, grappling with the inexplicable interference and obstacles hindering his path to redemption.

“I did not steal from anybody,” he asserted, imploring authorities to address the injustices he has endured over the years.

With his livelihood hanging in the balance, he expressed bewilderment at the lack of recourse, lamenting even the futile attempts to sell his remaining assets amidst dubious interference.

“Nobody’s coming to buy,” he revealed, citing ominous warnings against selling his vehicles.

Mr. Ikwukeme, in the video, laid bare the harsh realities of his ordeal, urging viewers to bear witness to his plight.

“I’m just showing it to the world to see what is going on,” he declared, a poignant plea for acknowledgment and support in his quest for justice.

Despite the adversities that have beset him, Emeka Ikwukeme appears to remain resolute in his determination to reclaim what was unjustly taken from him, even as his battle for survival rages on.

Anambra Govt Seals Illegal, Unhealthy Water Factories

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Anambra State Government, over the week, sealed some water producing companies in the State over their illegalities and unhealthiness.

According to information credited to Clara Madubuike of the State Ministry of Environment, the exercise and clampdown were carried out by the Ministry’s Health and Pollution Control Enforcement Team, who were led in the operation by the Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odimegwu.

Among other reasons, it was gathered that the illegal and unhealthy water factories were sealed off for also not obeying summons after they were served abatement notices by the Ministry.

Speaking shortly after the exercise, Commissioner Odimegwu said Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has zero tolerance for illegality and unhealthiness, as it holds the rule of law and the well-being of Ndị Anambra to the highest esteem.

According to Engr. Odimegwu, any water factory or institution that is operating illegally in the state or that does not meet required health standard will face the full weight of the law, to serve as deterrent to others.

To further discourage such, the Commissioner said the concerned team from the Ministry would henceforth be going round the state to monitor and penalize any business, hotels, water factories, restaurants, plazas and others that refused to maintain healthy practices or keep their environment, facilities and drainages clean.

He also reminded Ndị Anambra that the Governor’s vision of making the state a livable and prosperous homeland cannot only be achieved by the government, but through the collective and collaborative efforts of the people; hence the need for the public to play their own parts to further enhance the realization of the golden vision.
