MINNA, NIGERIA — A fierce territorial conflict has erupted in the dense border forests of Niger State, with foot soldiers loyal to the notorious bandit kingpin Dogo Gide successfully invading and dismantling camps belonging to the rival ‘Lakurawa’ terrorist group in Mashegu Local Government Area.
Exclusive video footage circulating within security intelligence circles shows a young fighter filming himself deep inside the former Lakurawa stronghold within the Ibbi forest.
Standing alongside what appears to be a fleet of high-powered operational motorcycles captured from the fleeing terrorists, the youth mockingly taunts the Lakurawa group, celebrating their retreat and claiming total dominance over the strategic enclave.
The Clash Over Ibbi Forest
The Ibbi forest, a vast and rugged terrain stretching across the Mashegu LGA, has long been a flashpoint as heavily armed criminal syndicates seek to control vital transit routes linking Niger State to the Northwest and parts of the Sahel.
The ‘Lakurawa’ group—an extremist faction with ideological and logistical roots traceably tied to Sahelian insurgent networks—had recently attempted to establish a permanent operational base in the forest to expand their influence into North-Central Nigeria.
However, their expansionist push directly encroached upon the traditional hunting grounds and routes heavily defended by Dogo Gide’s well-entrenched nomadic bandit network. Local security sources indicate that a series of violent, unpublicized skirmishes culminated in the Lakurawa fighters being completely overpowered and forced to abandon their logistics, including the motorcycles featured in the video.

Implications for Regional Insecurity
While the defeat of the Lakurawa cell removes one immediate extremist threat from the area, security analysts warn that the development does not signal a victory for local communities. Instead, it cements the hegemony of Dogo Gide’s faction.
Dogo Gide, one of Nigeria’s most resilient and well-armed bandit commanders, has previously masterminded high-profile mass kidnappings and successfully resisted multiple military offensives across Zamfara, Kebbi, and Niger states.
“What we are witnessing is not a breakdown of crime, but a violent consolidation of territory,” an Abuja-based security expert noted. “When major bandit syndicates clash with ideological terrorist groups over geographic control, the winner simply inherits the leverage to terrorize local farming communities with less competition.”
Community Vulnerability and Military Action
Residents of Mashegu and neighboring local government areas remain on high alert following the incident. Farmers have expressed deep concern that the victorious bandit faction will intensify cattle rustling and ransom-driven kidnappings to fund their expanded territorial holdings.
The Defense Headquarters has previously stated that the military’s air and ground components under Operation Whirl Punch are continuously tracking the movements of Dogo Gide and other prominent kachallas (bandit warlords) across the North-Central axis. Local leaders are urgently calling on joint security forces to launch immediate airstrikes on the newly captured Ibbi forest camps before the bandits fully fortify their new positions.
