A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), in Benue state, Barr. Omale Omale has congratulated the President elect, Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shittima, on their victories with a call on them to address cases of insecurity, unemployment, and economy to improve the living standard of citizens.

Omale, also congratulated the Benue state Governor elect, Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and his deputy, Sam Ode, saying their victories were historic and shows they are widely accepted in the country and Benue state.

Omale, in a statement made available to newsmen in Makurdi, said Nigerians and the Benue people, in particular, have opted for a new political order with high expectations, hence the need to get to work immediately.

While noting that the APC made the right choices during their primaries, the chieftain said like many others in the country, he has confidence in the ability of the President-elect to salvage the country and bring back its lost glory.

“Your victory is a further affirmation that, indeed, it is your destiny to rule this country at this point in time. So, I urged the President-elect to immediately address the issues of insecurity, unemployment, and economy to improve the living standard of the citizens.”

He advised that Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia and the APC in Benue must celebrate their victory with moderation and without hubris saying “This is the time to commence the act of rebuilding Benue State.”

He urged those who lost elections to be patriotic, mature, and exercise self-control, saying “Winning and losing elections make politicians stronger and are both sides of the political coin.

“We are brothers and sisters. I urge those who were not lucky enough this time against the resort to the courts and lawyers after the electorates has spoken.”

Also in his congratulatory message, Barr Benjamin Adanyi, said the election of Rev. Hyacinth Alia shows that God Himself brought him to rescue the people of Benue from the abysmal failure of governance and leadership.

“God indeed has answered the continuous prayers of Benue workers, pensioners, traders, farmers, and our entire citizenry, old and young who have suffered in no small measure, the misrule of the Governor Samuel Ortom led administration in the state.”

He said the level of poverty, anguish, and suffering in the faces of the people and their continuous cries and prayers that God has answered by bringing him on board is equally an indication that the current administration will be leaving a challenging and difficult responsibility of governance for him

Adanyi who noted that the time for politics is long over urged Alia to quickly get to work as soon as he is sworn in to rescue Benue people from their long sufferings.

Election violence: Investigate governors, deputies or face legal action, SERAP tells INEC

0

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to “urgently seek the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate allegations of electoral violence and other electoral offences including bribery against any state governors and their deputies during the just concluded general elections.”

SERAP also urged him to “promptly and effectively investigate reports of electoral violence and other electoral offences committed during the general elections, and to identify suspected perpetrators and their sponsors, and ensure their effective prosecution, regardless of their political status or affiliations.”

In the letter dated 25 March 2023 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “By allegedly engaging in electoral violence and other electoral offences in so blatant a fashion, suspected perpetrators and their sponsors have clearly acted in violation of constitutional provisions, international standards and the Electoral Act.”

SERAP said, “Section 52 of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, allows INEC to seek the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate allegations of electoral violence and other electoral offences such as bribery that may have been committed by any state governors and/or their deputies.”

According to SERAP, “INEC should promptly collaborate with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other law enforcement agencies to identify any politicians and their sponsors suspected to be responsible for electoral violence and other electoral offences during the elections.”

The letter, read in part: “Identifying, arresting, investigating and prosecuting those suspected of perpetrating electoral violence and other electoral offences during the 2023 general elections would act as a deterrent against electoral violence in future elections.”

“We would be grateful if immediate steps are taken to implement the recommended measures within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel INEC to comply with our request in the public interest.”

“Acting swiftly to address the brazen impunity and reports of electoral violence and other electoral offences during the 2023 general elections would also send a strong message to politicians that the INEC under your leadership would not tolerate any infringement of the electoral process.”

“Electoral violence is a threat to fair and representative elections. It is inconsistent and incompatible with the principles of democracy, the rule of law, transparency and accountability for politicians to allegedly use violence to disrupt the electoral process.”

“When politicians and their sponsors decide to engage in electoral violence and other electoral offences rather than contest fairly for people’s votes, there are possibilities that such politicians will show a disregard for democratic rules and a disposition to adopt illegal means becomes inevitable.”

“If voting is as important as INEC always claims it is, now is the time to take meaningful steps and action to end impunity for electoral violence and other electoral offences during elections.”

“Ending impunity for electoral violence and other electoral offences promote accountability of suspected perpetrators and their sponsors, ensure justice for victims, and ultimately advance the people’s right to vote and to participate in their own government, as well as bolster voter confidence in the electoral process.”

“Identifying, investigating, naming and shaming those suspected to be involved in electoral violence and other electoral offences during the 2023 general elections will also send a powerful message to politicians and their sponsors that they will not get away with their crime against the Nigerian people.”

“Electoral violence and other electoral offences reportedly committed during the 2023 general elections are contrary to the express provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act and international standards.”

“Electoral violence and other electoral offences undermine the ability of INEC to discharge its responsibilities under Section 153 of the Nigerian Constitution and paragraph 15(a) of the third schedule of the Constitution, and the Electoral Act 2022.”

“The Nigerian Constitution provides in Section 14(1)(c) that, ‘the participation by the people in their government shall be ensured in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.’”

“Sections 121 and 127 of the Electoral Act prohibit electoral bribery and undue influence before, during and after any election. Section 145(2) provides that, ‘a prosecution under this Act shall be undertaken by legal officers of the Commission or any legal practitioner appointed by it.’ Under section 2(b), the commission ‘shall have power to promote knowledge of sound democratic election processes.’”

“According to our information, the just concluded presidential and national assembly elections and governorship elections in some states witnessed widespread reports of voter suppression, voter intimidation and the destruction or theft of election materials by political party agents and thugs across all six geopolitical zones.”

“According to a report by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), several polling units recorded violence and/or fighting across the country.”

“These violent incidents were often focused in political strongholds of opposition or perceived opponents which suggest that the use of BVAS – which limits overvoting when properly used – has resulted in a more concerted effort to stymie citizens casting their votes in opponent’s strongholds.”

“Similar incidents of intimidation were reported in all geo-political zones.”

“In several states, political thugs, apparently with the support of law enforcement officials, disrupted and sent back voters intending to vote for opposition parties. Party agents were reported to be directing people who to vote for while those unwilling to do as directed were denied ballot papers and forced to leave the polling units.”

“There were reports of destruction of used ballot papers and vandalization of entire polling units in some states. Violence was also used to target BVAS machines in order to disrupt the process and ensure the cancellation of results.”

“According to the CDD, there are reports of vote trading in zones across the country, with both cash and goods used by all political parties in an effort to entice voters to cast their ballots at their direction. The CDD noted vote buying at polling units during the elections across the country.”

From Msurshima Andrew, Makurdi

A peace building organization, International Alert, in collaboration with Benue state government has concluded plans to implement a 24 months project, “Powering Peace Through Climate Action,” to restore peace for development in the state.

The project is funded by the UK and has potentials for establishing peace, dealing with the impact of climate change and transforming the local economy of targeted communities.

Reviewing the project in Makurdi, the Country Director of International Alert Nigeria, Paul-Bemshima Nyulaku, noted that extreme climatic issues such as flooding, extreme heat and drought has led to soil degradation resulting in low crop yields.

He said if nothing is done and urgently too, decline in agricultural productivity would further discourage the farmers and may lead to change in livelihood especially in the rural settings.

The Country Director also noted that the scarcity and competition for land and other natural resources accounts for violent conflicts and groups across the country, saying “We need to find ways to deal with the impact of climate change, seek to improve agricultural yields through climate smart agricultural practices as a pivot to promote peace and hopefully, prosperity.”

Aacording to him, the project will run for 24 months, and will be implemented in four communities of Makurdi and Agatu Local Governments of Benue state, same as Sokoto states.

The organization called the Benue state government, key traditional leaders among others to support the project to make it a success.

The state Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr Godwin Oyiwona, while launching the project said Benue is privileged to be considered by International Alert for implement of the project.

He acknowledged the huge damage that climate change has done on the lives of Benue people over the years, and assured that administration of governor Samuel Ortom would give all necessary support to ensure the project succeeds to improve the lives of the people.

Traditional leaders and members of the Civil Society Organizations, (CSOs), who were present also commended the organization for their peace building project and assured of their commitment and support to make it a success.

There was an outburst of joy and standing ovation in Awka in Anambra State capital on Saturday, as the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi made a surprise appearance at the venue of the celebration of the one year anniversary in office of the State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

The event, which held at the International Convention Center, Awka, was graced by many dignitaries from different parts of the country and beyond, including former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.

The celebrant, Governor Soludo was delivering his anniversary speech, but was interrupted by an outburst of joy, cheers, and standing ovation overtook the arena as Obi surfaced from nowhere.

Obi, who marched to a seat reserved at the front after responding to the cheers and salutations from the crowd, but abruptly got up to greet the Chief Obasanjo, when he was informed of his presence.

Soludo, who eventually resumed his speech after the minutes of interruption, described Obi as an illustrious son of the soil.

“It’s a very special day in Anambra. Before you walked in, my predecessor in office, and an illustrious son of Anambra in whom we are well please, Mr Peter Obi…

“Before you came, I was appreciating Mr President, the father of Nigeria, who laid very clear foundations,” he said.

Many described Obi’s attendance of the anniversary celebration as a surprise one, as they least expected he would attend the event, given the assumed political rift between him and Governor Soludo.

DSS Warn Politicians To Watch Their Words Not To Ignite Violence In The Country

Press Release

The Department of State Service (DSS), again, alerts the public of plans to violently disrupt peace in the country. The Service hereby warns those desperate to cause a breakdown of law and order to desist from that. It would be recalled that the Service had earlier advised political players to abide by the rules of engagement as well as approach the courts for redress, if and where there are suspicions of infractions on extant electoral laws. It is evident that some aggrieved politicians are already taking advantage of this legal process. This, without doubt, is the beauty of democracy. It is strongly believed that this approach enhances peace and security. All and sundry should cherish it.

Be that as it may, the DSS will not tolerate a situation where persons and/or groups take laws into their hands and champion anarchy. Those peddling fake news, hate speech and all forms of false narratives as basis to ignite violence or pit the people against the present or incoming administrations, at the Federal, State and Parliamentary levels, should stop forthwith. Those inciting violence have nothing to gain as doing so will not only consume them but also the innocent. It is otherwise disturbing to see respected personalities use their platforms to mislead or incite citizens. This, to say the least, does not augur well for peaceful coexistence and general order.

Therefore, the Service will continue to take necessary measures to checkmate these elements who do not wish the country well. This is to ensure that the conducive environment is provided for citizens and residents to pursue their legitimate businesses. A stitch in time, they say, saves nine. Let all be guided.
