FG fixed 3rd May as commencement date for census

BY SULE TAHIR

The Federal Government has confirmed 3 rd May this year as Commencement date for the 2023 National Population and Housing Census nationwide.

A member of the Publicity and Advocacy Committee on 2023 National Population and Housing Census Garba Abari confirmed this in Abuja.

He said that the three-day exercise would commence May 3 and end on May 5 across the country.

Mr Abari, who is the director-general, National Orientation Agency, NOA, explained that the census exercise would capture every person, household and structure for national planning and project execution purposes.

According to him, the change in the date was due to the postponement of the 2023 gubernatorial and state houses of assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

“That change by INEC made it mandatory for us to also adjust the date for the conduct of the exercise,” he said.

He described the census and the 2023 elections as major national events with significant importance which had earlier been planned to hold not too far away from each other.

“The census had to be put forward from the initial date of March 29 to April 2nd, now to May 3rd to 5th.

“There are two things that informed the shift in date. First, in the course of our planning by the National Population Commission, it was so factored that INEC will also tinker with its own electoral timetable.

“The gubernatorial election, as you are aware, had to be shifted by one week. This had a telling effect on the date of
commencement of the census.

“Just like election, the Census is also a very long process, from the training, the sub-trainings, retraining leading up till the very day of the actual house listing and numbering.

“These will then be followed by the actual capture of the population.”

On the level of preparedness, the NOA boss assured the nation that the National Population Commission was ready to embark on the exercise.

He described the exercise as a significant event that would aid national planning and execution of developmental projects.

Abba K. Yusuf: A New Wave of Hope – By Byashir A. Muzakkari, Ph.D.

The just concluded Kano State gubernatorial elections have brought about a new era of hope for the people of Kano State. Abba Kabir Yusuf (Abba Gida-Gida) emerged as the winner of the keenly contested elections, under the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and his victory has sparked a new wave of hope and optimism among the people of Kano State, who believe that he is capable of restoring the lost glory of the state.

Come May 29, 2023, I wish him the best in his new position as governor of Kano State, and I sincerely hope that he will work assiduously to effect positive change in the state.

Abba Kabir Yusuf’s victory is a clear indication of the people’s confidence in his ability to restore the lost glory of Kano State. His experience and track record in public service have earned him the respect and trust of the people, and they believe that he has what it takes to lead the state towards a brighter future.

The people of Kano State have high expectations of Abba Kabir Yusuf, and they believe in his capacity to govern the state. The state has been facing several challenges in recent years, including a decline in the education system, a lack of adequate healthcare, a struggling economy, and high levels of unemployment. These challenges have negatively affected the quality of life of the people of Kano State, and they are looking to Abba Kabir Yusuf to provide solutions to these problems.

The people of Kano State are hopeful that Abba will prioritize the development of the state by investing in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The state’s education sector has been in decline for some time, with a shortage of teachers, inadequate infrastructure, and limited resources. Kano State has the highest number of out-of-school children in the country, and this is a major concern.

Abba Kabir Yusuf has pledged to revamp the education system in Kano State by investing in infrastructure, training and recruiting more teachers, and providing the necessary resources for learning to ensure that every child receives a quality education.

The healthcare system in Kano State is also in need of urgent attention. The state has a high rate of maternal and child mortality, and there is a shortage of healthcare facilities and personnel. His Excellency, Abba K. Yusuf, has promised to invest in the healthcare system by improving infrastructure, recruiting and training healthcare professionals, and providing the necessary equipment and resources for effective healthcare delivery.

The economy of Kano State is struggling, with high levels of poverty and unemployment. The state has a high potential for agricultural production, but this potential has not been fully harnessed. I am confident that Abba’s victory will offer an opportunity for investments in agriculture and other sectors of the economy to create jobs, reduce poverty, and improve the standard of living for the people of Kano State.

I am confident that His Excellency, Abba K. Yusuf, will prioritize the development of education, healthcare, the economy, and job creation in the state to ensure that every citizen has access to basic amenities and opportunities for growth and development. I wish him all the best in his new role as governor of Kano State come May 29, 2023, and I hope that he will work tirelessly to bring about positive change in the state.

The people of Kano State have high expectations of him, and I am optimistic he will deliver on his promises to improve the standard of living of the people of Kano State.

The Unbeatable Legacies Of Governor Abdullahi Umar GandujeB – By Maduabuchi Madu-Jerry Nmeribeh

“It is time for us all to stand and cheer for the doer, the achiever – the one who recognizes the challenges and does something about it.” ~ Vince Lombardi

By May 29, 2023, Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will be handing over the mantle of leadership to his successor. He took the mantle as the number one citizen of Kano (the most populous and richest state in northern Nigeria) on May 29, 2015. He was re-elected in 2019 to continue his second-term, which is coming to an end in about two months time.

On assumption of office, Ganduje had promised to build his administration on the bedrock of continuity. That promise he kept, with the completion of many abandoned and uncompleted projects left behind by his predecessors, ranging from physical infrastructure, health, education, as well as human development. Space may not allow the writer to mention these many projects which have been completed and have added value to the development of the commercial city of Kano, as well as promoting the comfort and welfare of her residents.

Apart from completing abandoned and uncompleted projects, Ganduje also initiated gigantic projects that have direct impacts to the wellbeing and welfare of the people. His records on infrastructural development in terms of constructions of roads, inter-change bridges and flyovers, have remained unbeatable in the history of Kano, as observers and pundits have agreed that, indeed, Kano has taken the front-pew as one of the mega-cities in Africa. This is coming close to Ganduje’s dream of making Kano equal to Lagos in terms of physical infrastructure.

Kano being an agrarian state, Ganduje, during his first tenure concentrated much on boosting the commercial production of rice and wheat, empowering farmers and creating enabling environment for them to thrive. He also performed creditably in boosting livestock production. Many livestock farmers were sent abroad for training, enhancing their skills on modern milk production and animal husbandry.

His records in education remain unmatched as he did not only continue with the home and abroad scholarship scheme of his predecessor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, but also settled a backlog of arrears accrued by the immediate-past administration, running into billions of Naira. While also ensuring the growth and development of the two Kano State owned universities—Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology and Maitama Yusuf Sule University, Ganduje also ensured that the Na’ajatu Rimi College of Education is upgraded to the status of a university. Today, Kano State boasts of three state-owned universities. His achievements in the girl-child education, Almajiri system of education as well as free, compulsory basic and secondary education, cannot be overemphasized. International organizations such as the UNICEF, UNESCO, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among others, at different occasions, gave him commendations for the feat he achieved in these areas.

In terms of commerce and industry, Ganduje has ensured that Kano takes its rightful place as the commercial nerve centre of the North, as he has kept encouraging both small and large scale businesses. The erection of government-owned ultra-modern shopping plazas in strategic locations across the commercial city remain a testament to the fact that Ganduje has added value to the commercial status of Kano. Major markets such as the Abubakar Rimi market, Singer market, Dawanau Grain market, the ancient Kurmi market, the multi-billion Naira Kantin Kwari textile market, among others, have also been given a face-lift.

Just recently, the Kano drug market constructed inside the spacious Kanawa economic city was inaugurated by the Minister of Health. With the commissioning of Kano drug market, the state became the first in ensuring that drugs are no longer sold in open markets. This has curtailed the bane of drug abuse and selling of illicit cum sub-standard drugs in Kano. The Kanawa Economic City will also house other major markets such as the multi-billion Naira textile market when fully completed.

It is on record that Ganduje has also made giant strides in human development, empowering hundreds of thousands of youths and women, who today, have not only become employers of labour, but are self-reliant and breadwinners of their families. In collaboration with the Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria (PAN), Kaduna, Ganduje’s administration trained hundreds of professional automobile mechanics who are certified and are applying modern expertise in car repairs with globally accepted standards. More so, the establishment of Dangote Skills Acquisition Centre has empowered youths within and outside Kano who are being trained in different types of skills to enable them become self-reliant and economically stable.

Governor Ganduje’s achievements in the health sector remain unequaled. He has not only checkmated maternal mortality, but has also ensured the welfare of under-five age children. Both primary and secondary healthcare delivery in Kano received a boost under Ganduje’s administration. Apart from ensuring the completion and commissioning of the ultra-modern Muhammadu Buhari Specialist hospital in Gingiyu, Ganduje built one of the best Cancer Treatment Centre, which has the capability of making Kano a health tourist state for Nigerians from other states of the federation and people from neighbouring countries. The upgrade and renovation of major medical centres across the 44 Local Government Areas have also served the health needs of the teeming Kano populace.

Another unbeatable feat of Ganduje is the creation of five Emirates in Kano, with the sole ambition of taking development to the hinterlands. Indeed, the creation of the Bichi, Karaye, Gaya and Rano Emirates, in addition with the ancient Kano Emirate, all being presided over by First Class Emirs did not only end a long-standing, but silent traditional tussle in Kano, but has also ensured the even spread of socio-insfrastructural development across the nooks and crannies of Kano state.

For the eight years Ganduje has remained as the Executive Governor of Kano State, the state hitherto known for its volatile nature has not only remained peaceful, but a haven for both local and foreign investors. While neighbouring states of Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Zamfara, Sokoto keep experiencing different sheds of security threats, Kano under the watch of Governor Ganduje has been rated high as the most peaceful state in Nigeria, erasing her age-long status as a hotbed of ethno-religious crisis. Non-natives and people from different religious faiths and denominations resident in Kano have continued to commend Ganduje for making Kano a home for all Nigerians without discrimination in terms of ethnic or religious affiliations.

Prince Ajayi Memaiyeton, a veteran journalist cum public analyst, resident in Kano, described Ganduje’s administration as “equal-to- none” in the history of Kano politics, particularly, in the aspect of peace and security. Prince Ajayi, the pioneer chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State chapter, said Ganduje’s tenure is, “the end of an era,” but hoped that his successor will build on his good legacies.

According to Prince Ajayi who was at one-time the Managing-Director of the state-owned Triumph Newspapers, “Ganduje did not only show love and affection to non-natives, he accommodated and treated them as real citizens of Kano State. He protected their lives, their businesses and genuine interest. Ganduje is a true nationalist, a bridge-builder, lover of peace and a decent politician who truly believes in one Nigeria. He is not tribalistic, and he does not segregate. Ganduje deserves a Noble Peace Prize for keeping Kano away from any sort of crisis and violence for the eight years he has been in the Government House as the Governor of the most populous state in northern Nigeria where people from different parts of Africa and, indeed, the world, troop in on daily basis for various chains of business transactions.”

Prince Ajayi, like other discernable Nigerians, predicted that Ganduje shall have more taskful assignment for nation-building ahead of him as the President-elect, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu takes over Aso Rock from President Muhammadu Buhari, come May 29. Indeed, Ganduje is wearing a big shoe, it is also hoped that his successor will not only build on his legacies, but will also come up with policies that will build a greater Kano and make the people even happier.

By Joshua Chibuzo Andrew, Owerri

The Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Igyorov Ward of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State has suspended the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu.

Ayu was suspended for alleged anti-party activities after passing a vote of no confidence on his leadership.

Reading their resolution, the secretary of the party in Igyorov ward, Banger Dooyum, alleged that Ayu contributed to party’s defeat in his ward and local government in the governorship election.

He was accused of not paying his annual dues as enshrined by the party’s constitution.

However, twelve out of the seventeen exco members signed the documents authorizing his suspension.

It was also alleged that the PDP chieftain did not vote during the
governorship and state assembly elections held on the 18th of March, 2023.

According to them, most of Ayu’s closest allies worked for the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) which resulted in the abysmal performance of the PDP in Igyorov Ward.

The chairman of Igyorov, Kashi Philip, also signed the letter alongside the exco.

Imo Guber: Ararume Denies Picking Guber Forms Under Labour Party

By Joshua Chibuzo Andrew, Owerri

A former senator that represented Okigwe Zone, Ifeanyi Araraume has debunked reports that he had picked the expression of interest form to run for the office of governor in Imo state, under the Labour Party (LP).

Araraume, who stated this in a statement by his issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Legal and Public Affairs, described the report as fake and mischievous.

The statement said: “The attention of Senator Ifeanyi Araraume has been drawn to the mischievous and fake list of Labour Party governorship aspirants, making rounds in Sections of the Media wherein his name was published as having picked the expression of interest form to run for the office of governor in Imo state, under the Labour Party (LP).

“Senator Arararaume hereby reiterates unequivocally that he is still a bonafide member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Director of Trade and Economic Affairs (South) of the APC presidential campaign council (PCC).

“He is not a member of Labour Party and has not picked or paid for any nomination form from Labour Party and does not intent to do so now or later in this dispensation.

“Senator Araraume is a responsible member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and does not even have the faintest idea who the Labour Party ward chairman is in his immediate ward.

“It should be noted that the Distinguished Senator is not a man to shy away from what he believes in and will not approach the Governorship contest in Imo state through the back door if he wishes to throw his hat into the ring for a contest which he has the requisite qualifications and capacity.

“The fake aspirants list under the Imo state Labour Party is a fabrication and the work of mischief makers, who are bent on using his name to score cheap political victory.

“We hereby advise that the said list be disregarded as the story is not the true representation of facts on ground.”

CNPP Urges Buhari, Security Agencies To Investigate CJN’s London Trip To Save Nigerian Judiciary

0

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and all relevant security agencies to immediately investigate and make public their findings on the rumoured visit of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Olukayode Ariwoola to the United Kingdom for medical reasons and the allegation that it was in disguise to meet with President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu in London.

The CNPP, in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu, said this has become necessary to preserve the integrity of the Nigerian judiciary.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola was reported to have been sighted in London, United Kingdom pretending to be a physically-challenged old man, for a secret meeting with the President-elect.

According to the Peoples Gazette, an online news medium, Supreme Court sources said Ariwoola’s disguising was a clandestine preparation for a meeting with Tinubu.

The CNPP noted that despite the denials of the plans to hold such meetings by the two personalities, “the integrity of both the chief judicial personality in Nigeria and that of the President-Elect have been called to question, especially in view of the widespread criticisms of the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s rulings on political matters since the 2023 general elections.

“The Supreme Court under the current leadership has given several verdicts on political litigations in recent times which put the integrity of the apex court to question before this very damaging report by an online news portal on the alleged planned meeting between the CJN and the President-elect in London.

“Allowing the matter to slide without a public inquiry will be a recipe for breach of national security in the event that the Supreme Court rulings fail to favour some parties in election litigations currently before various election petition tribunals, especially the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal under the direct jurisdiction of the CJN.

“The CNPP therefore calls on President Muhammadu Buhari, Security Agencies, and all relevant stakeholders to institute open investigation into the reported planned meeting between CJN Ariwoola and President-elect Tinubu to lay to rest the controversy in the interest of justice and national security.

“This is imperative as the level of distrust, religious and tribal colourations permeating topics among supporters of different political camps in the country, especially now that the most damaging allegation on the integrity of the Nigerian judiciary became a media affair, should be taken very seriously to avoid a national catastrophy.

“It is also of national importance to ensure that the matter is openly investigated and the report made public as most Nigerian politicians and citizens who are aggrieved by the outcome of the 2023 general elections as conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may resort to self-help in the event of perceived biases in the judicial pronouncements on the outcome by the tribunals.

“The CNPP then urges politicians to caution their supporters on the use of ethnicity and religion as campaign tools. Ethnic profiling is dangerous to peace and unity of the country and must be stopped.

“We therefore call on security agencies to ensure that all persons who were involved in inciting comments before, during, and after the 2023 general elections are prosecuted to serve as deterrence to others, otherwise the individuals and groups will remain bad examples and reference cases in the near future”, the CNPP warned.

Iwuanyanwu didn’t refer to Yorubas as political rascals- Ohaneze

1

The Apex Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has said that Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu never referred to Yorubas as political rascals, describing the report as a lie from the pit of hell.

Ohaneze said the report was “a typical falsehood, fabricated by social media entrepreneurs, decorated with wings, expanded with venom, injected with ethnic nuances to create inter-ethnic mistrust between the age-long partners in social, cultural, religious and economic development of Nigeria.

The group said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, in Enugu on Sunday.

Ogbonnia said: “Our attention has been drawn to the fake news making the rounds that the Chairman, Council of Elders, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, referred to the Yoruba as political rascals.

He denied that Iwuanyanwu never made such a comment while speaking in Awka, Anambra State, on Saturday during an event to mark the one year in office of Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra state.

Ogbonnia said Chief Iwuanyanwu only drew the attention of the audience and the general public to the fact that Ndigbo and Yoruba people were neither quarreling nor fighting, implying that the Yoruba were a friendly group of people.

He said Iwuanyanwu only said, “I want to tell those in Lagos to realize that there is no war between us and the Yorubas”, adding that “those who attacked Ndigbo in Lagos recently are rascals who should be arrested”.

“This has mischievously been twisted to imply that ‘Yoruba people are political rascals and that we will fight them’. This is quel dommage from the insidious minds of those who wish to create rift between the Igbo and the Yoruba ethnics.

“At no time in history, there is often a tug of war between two major groups; mostly the good people with conscience on one hand and the devious insidious minds on the other.

“So, as much as some mischief makers will twist the speech by Iwuanyanwu, the truth remains that he holds the Yorubas in a very high esteem and he used the Awka event to express it,” Ogbonnia said.

He added that emphasis was that “we must not attribute the ugly event in Lagos to the good people of Yoruba ethnic, rather, it was the handiwork of rascals, hooligans, spivs, charlatans, miscreants and dregs of Lagos society.

“It is important to highlight that Chief Iwuanyanwu is a renowned patriotic detribalized Nigerian who has enjoyed the fidelity, confidence, solidarity, support of the Yoruba when he was in active business and politics.

“Iwuanyanwu in all his private and public discussions has often commended the profound Yoruba cultural values, intellect and and hospitality.

“He applauds the cordial relationship between the Igbo and the Yoruba, citing that several Igbo are integral parts of various Yoruba communities.

He maintained that there has been successful marriages of Yoruba daughters by frontline Igbo sons, citing Chief Emeka Anyaoku; Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien; Prof. Vincent Ike, Prof. Okey Ndibe and others.

Ogbonnia exemplify the irreproachable similarity in the Igbo-Yoruba cultural values and cosmology.

“Evidently, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), enjoyed the support of eminent Igbo sons and daughters.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ohanaeze Ndigbo will resist any attempt to paint the 2023 presidential election with an ethnic tar,” he added.

From Ahmad SAKA, Bauchi

The Chairman Arewa Youths fir the sustenance of Democracy and good governance Alhaji Salihu has said the victory of Osun Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, at the Court of Appeal was victory for democracy. Addressing a Press Conference in Bauchi over the weekend Magaji said the judgment of the appellate court was a resounding affirmation of the expressed will of the people of Osun State in their quest for purposeful leadership and good governance in the State. You would recalled that The Court of Appeal on Friday upheld Adeleke’s victory at the July 16, 2022 Governorship election after upturning the decision of the tribunal He said the jubilation in Osun State and other States of the Federation is a testament of the fact that Adeleke’s election is not only a reflection of the aspiration of the majority of the people of Osun State but also that of millions of lovers of democracy across the nation. Chairman said since his inauguration in November last year, Adeleke has continued to demonstrate uncommon capacity for purposeful governance as evinced in his people-oriented and result-driven developmental projects in line with the yearnings and aspiration of the people. He congratulated Governor Adeleke and urged him to continue in repositioning Osun State and giving the people the breath of fresh air that eluded them under the abysmal APC administration in the State.

Magaji said the judgement has once again reaffirmed the confidence of the Nigerian people in he nation’s judiciary. He said: “The judgement vindicated Adeleke, it clearly shows that the will of the people has spoken, the fact that truth cannot be hidden and it is constant” “President Buhari and the National Assembly’s achievements on electoral reforms has come to stay “The judgement shows Truly the Judiciary remains the hope of the masses. We in the 19 Northern states congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on this occasion the entire members of PDP and Osun people as a whole. “We are appealing to the APC Family of Osun to accept this judgment in good faith and join hands with Senator Ademola to move Osun state forward. “In any electoral contest in a democracy you win some you lose some . He said, “We hope the Judiciary will bring this courage to bare in doing the needful in deciding the Presidential election petition cases now before them. “The Judiciary must realize that the only hope Nigerians have today is in them. We hope they will not dash that hope.

The Justices of the Appeal Court now have the opportunity to write their name in gold by restoring the lost confidence to the judiciary again. “Majority of Nigerians have in recent time lost hope and confidence in the judiciary but with this judgement the hope and confidence of the people has been rekindled. “We hope the Judiciary keeps and sustains this renewed confidence now rejuvenated through this courageous judgement.”
