ABUJA — The political atmosphere in the South-East has grown increasingly charged following a sharp rebuke directed at Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, by a prominent pro-democracy organization, Ebonyi Citizens for Change. The international pressure group condemned recent public outbursts by the Governor against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, characterizing them as an aggressive diversionary tactic designed to drag external actors into Ebonyi’s internal political arena.
The controversy stems from statements made by Governor Nwifuru during a recent political rally in Abakaliki. During the event, Nwifuru openly accused Wike of orchestrating a clandestine plot to flip Ebonyi State to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Governor went further to allege that Wike had boasted that Ebonyi State was “his for the taking,” supposedly with the tacit endorsement or permission of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
An Expression of Electoral Panic
Reacting to the development through an official statement signed by its National Spokesperson, Chukwuemeka Ukadike, Ebonyi Citizens for Change dismissed the Governor’s allegations as “unnecessary, disrespectful, immature, and tantamount to a call for arms” against the FCT Minister.
According to the group, the Governor’s aggressive posture does not reflect genuine geopolitical defense, but rather an underlying anxiety regarding his administrative viability and standing ahead of the 2027 polls. The organization asserted that Nwifuru is increasingly agitated by what they describe as a growing wave of popular rejection by Ebonyi citizens, driven primarily by a perceived deficit in governance and tangible developmental infrastructure.
“Nwifuru is panicking,” Ukadike stated. “He knows that if elections were to hold today, he would lose. So he is setting the stage and dragging the names of Wike and President Tinubu into the matter.”

The Institutional and Fiscal Critique
The pressure group strongly questioned the institutional logic behind Nwifuru’s claim that President Tinubu would facilitate the transfer of an APC-controlled state to the opposition.
- The Presidential Contradiction: The group described the notion that President Tinubu—the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—would willfully “dash” Ebonyi State to another political platform as both “inconceivable and illogical.”
- The Fiscal Accountability Gap: Raising critical questions regarding fiscal transparency, Ukadike pointed out that the Ebonyi State government has received over ₦500 billion in allocations since Nwifuru assumed office in May 2023. The group argued that the FCT Minister cannot be held responsible for the lack of physical development or transformative projects across the state despite these substantial inflows.
Shifting Paradigms Ahead of 2027
Reminding stakeholders of the constitutional realities of the federal structure, the group emphasized that Wike is not an indigene of Ebonyi State and holds no voting power within the state’s electoral jurisdiction. Consequently, attempting to frame the FCT Minister as a political bogeyman is an attempt to find a convenient scapegoat for administrative shortfalls.
As the political realignment toward the 2027 general elections intensifies, Ebonyi Citizens for Change warned that the electorate is becoming more sophisticated and analytical. The group concluded that if the current administration fails to justify its enormous statutory allocations through verifiable socioeconomic development, it will face a decisive defeat by the PDP at the polls, irrespective of any external political narratives.
