BERLIN, GERMANY — President Bola Tinubu has reportedly adjusted his diplomatic roster, appointing Senator Ita Enang as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, effectively replacing the initial nominee, former Aviation Minister Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.
The shift follows weeks of speculation surrounding Fani-Kayode’s standing with the German government. While the former minister previously dismissed reports of friction, recent developments indicate a strategic swap between the two political figures.
The German Rejection Reports
The diplomatic change comes after Peoples Gazette alleged that the German government officially declined Fani-Kayode’s nomination. The report suggested that authorities in Berlin raised concerns over his history of divisive and ethnocentric public commentary, labeling his potential presence as “destabilising” to diplomatic relations.
Ita Enang Moves to Berlin
Senator Ita Enang, who was originally designated as the High Commissioner to South Africa, will now move to Berlin to lead the mission. Analysts suggest Enang’s extensive legislative experience makes him a more suitable candidate for navigating trade and energy partnerships with the German Bundestag. He is expected to arrive in Berlin in the coming weeks to present his credentials to the German presidency.
Fani-Kayode’s Potential South Africa Posting
While Fani-Kayode has been pulled from the German mission, he remains in the diplomatic loop. Reports suggest he may be redeployed to fill the vacancy in South Africa created by Enang’s move. Although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued a formal statement on the redeployment, insiders indicate that the presidency is keen on finding a suitable alternative post for the former minister.
