ABAKALIKI, EBONYI STATE — Tensions in Ezza South Local Government Area have flared up once again following an alleged violent assault on a local resident, Mmaduabuchi Ogbeh, arising from growing political rivalry ahead of upcoming elections.
Ogbeh, an indigene of the Amara community in Ezza South LGA, was allegedly targeted and beaten by an associate of a serving lawmaker in the state. Reports indicate the assault was directly linked to Ogbeh’s open campaigning for the lawmaker’s stepbrother, who is contesting under the New Nigeria Peoples Party / opposition alliance framework (NDC), while the honorable member remains a staunch figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A Pattern of Local Political Intimidation
The incident underscores a troubling surge in partisan violence across Ezza South LGA. Over recent weeks, the local government area has witnessed repeated clashes, including physical disruptions of political meetings, vandalization of properties, and assaults targeting political organizers and journalists covering opposition movements.
The political dynamics in the area have turned particularly intense due to intra-family disputes spilling into the public sphere, where relatives aligned with opposing political platforms have drawn sharp lines among local supporters.
Rising Public Outcry
Civil society groups and community residents in Amara have condemned the attack, describing the targeting of citizens for exercising their constitutional right to political association as a threat to democratic norms.
Calls have been mounted urging the Ebonyi State Police Command to investigate the assault on Mmaduabuchi Ogbeh and ensure that those responsible, regardless of their political connections or affiliation with government officials, are held accountable under the law.
