NEW YORK — Officers from the New York City Police Department handcuffed and arrested the President of the Igbo Organization New York, Ifeanyi Ajomiwu Nwakanma, following a physical altercation outside Obi-Igbo Hall on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The incident unfolded during a scheduled general meeting at the community center. Tensions escalated after three association members—Hon. Ositadinma Eziuzo, Hon. Bright Ihediuwa, and Hon. Agwu Ama Agwu—along with their spouses, were designated to be barred from entering the venue. Vice President Chief Hon. Vero Aneke was posted at the entrance alongside security personnel to enforce the restriction.
While Hon. Eziuzo and his wife were turned away at the door, Hon. Bright Ihediuwa was admitted into the hall after exchanging pleasantries with the Vice President. Upon discovering Hon. Ihediuwa inside the building, Mr. Nwakamma reportedly confronted and physically assaulted him.
Emergency Medical Services and NYPD units arrived shortly after calls for assistance were made. Hon. Ihediuwa opted to press formal criminal assault charges against the organization president, leading officers to detain Mr. Nwakamma at the scene. Paramedics transported Hon. Ihediuwa to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while Mr. Nwakamma was taken to the local police precinct to await arraignment before a judge.
The physical confrontation follows months of severe internal administrative friction and financial disputes within the organization’s executive committee. The organization’s Secretary had previously raised questions regarding unauthorized expenditures, including a $23,000 air-conditioning installation in the secondary hall that was presented post-completion without executive approval.
Broader financial concerns have also emerged regarding the management of Obi-Igbo Hall revenues. While fixed income from store rentals and tenants is managed through the Building Management Committee, variable income from main hall events has remained under the personal control of the president. Figures cited from January 1, 2024, through August 31, 2024, show total revenues of $359,643.65 against bank deposits of $34,702.26, leaving $324,941.39 allocated to hall maintenance without detailed accounting.
Further operational strain stems from the prolonged absence of an appointed Financial Secretary to oversee organization funds independently. Representatives for the Igbo Organization New York have not yet issued an official operational update regarding interim leadership or the upcoming court proceedings.
