ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has hit out at Peter Obi, accusing him of planning to dump the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to escape internal competition for the party’s presidential ticket.
The criticism follows reports that Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are eyeing a move to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the Action Peoples Party (APP). This shift is reportedly a reaction to the ADC establishment favouring Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 ticket and a recent Supreme Court ruling that has clouded the party’s legal standing.
“Escaping the Test”
Ahmad questioned Obi’s leadership, comparing the current rumours to his 2022 exit from the PDP. “Is he leaving to escape standing against other aspirants?” Ahmad asked, arguing that a leader who avoids party primaries lacks the capacity to unite Nigeria.
Strategic Pivot
While Obi’s camp remains silent, insiders indicate that his supporters are increasingly pushing for a move to the APP (the “Elephant Party”). They argue the move is not about “running” from a contest, but about finding a fair platform away from the “anointed” candidates of the ADC power brokers.
As the deadline for political realignments approaches, the pressure is mounting on the Obi-Kwankwaso duo to finalize their next platform.
