KANO, NIGERIA – Tensions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have reached a breaking point as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi prepare to exit the party following reports of being sidelined by party power brokers.
Sources within the coalition indicate that both leaders have faced significant internal friction, with strong signals emerging that the “owners” of the ADC have settled on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to fly the party’s presidential flag.
NDC and APP as Alternative Platforms
Feeling marginalized in the ADC leadership structure, Kwankwaso has directed his supporters and the Kwankwasiyya movement to resign. While a move to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is high on the agenda for next week, insiders reveal that the duo is also in active talks with the Action Peoples Party (APP) as a viable alternative.
Reports suggest that Peter Obi’s camp has expressed a particular willingness to defect to the APP—famously known as the “Elephant Party”—viewing it as a stable and grassroots-oriented vehicle for their joint ticket.
Mass Lawmaker Exit
The fallout is expected to be widespread. National Assembly members who joined the ADC from the NNPP and LP are now preparing formal resignation letters. These lawmakers are moving in solidarity with Kwankwaso and Obi, citing a lack of a level playing field within the ADC establishment.
Finalizing the Departure
While some ADC leaders are making frantic efforts to halt the mass exodus, the move appears irreversible. Kwankwaso’s team held a conclusive meeting with opposition leaders last night, signaling that the duo is ready to pivot to whichever platform offers the most transparent path to the 2027 ballot.
As the political dust settles, the emergence of Atiku as the presumed favorite of the ADC establishment has effectively accelerated the formation of this new opposition front.
