ABUJA, Nigeria — The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed its House of Representatives primary election for the 2027 general elections by one day, shifting the national exercise from Friday, May 15, to Saturday, May 16, 2026.
The 24-hour adjustment was confirmed in a statement released by the party’s National Working Committee. The party leadership clarified that the postponement strictly affects the lower legislative chamber’s primary elections, while the rest of the internal election timetable remains unchanged.
Logistical Adjustments and Timetable
Party insiders indicate that the brief delay was necessary to resolve logistical bottlenecks, including the secure deployment of voting materials and the accreditation of delegates across various federal constituencies nationwide.
Following the one-day shift, the APC’s internal election schedule will proceed as follows:
- House of Representatives Primaries: Saturday, May 16, 2026
- Senate Primaries: Monday, May 18, 2026
- State House of Assembly Primaries: Wednesday, May 20, 2026
- Governorship Primaries: Thursday, May 21, 2026
- Presidential Primaries: Saturday, May 23, 2026
Calls for Fair Play
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions within the party over the selection of candidates. President Bola Tinubu has reportedly urged party stakeholders, governors, and the National Working Committee to ensure a transparent process and avoid the arbitrary imposition of unpopular candidates.
Screening committees have concluded the evaluation of legislative aspirants across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with cleared candidates now adjusting their final campaign strategies to fit the new weekend voting date.
