ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria and major political stakeholders gathered in Abuja for the formal signing of the Peace Accord, signaling the upcoming election season.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, delivered the presidential remarks, commending the National Peace Committee for its ongoing efforts in promoting issue-based campaigns and non-violent political engagement.
A Call for Issue-Based Campaigns
The President’s remarks highlighted the importance of upholding national unity, urging political actors to avoid divisive tactics and instead focus on policy debates that address the nation’s key challenges.
Key points emphasized during the address included:
- Role of the National Peace Committee: Appreciation was extended to NPC leaders, including former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, for maintaining peace agreements since 2014.
- Electoral Improvements: The address acknowledged technological advancements made by electoral authorities, noting that electronic voter verification systems have contributed to improving process transparency across recent electoral cycles.
- Commitment Against Misinformation: The ruling All Progressives Congress committed to peaceful campaign standards, explicitly rejecting hate speech, violence, and the deliberate spread of misinformation across social media and digital platforms.
