ABUJA, Nigeria – Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has claimed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) owes its current national relevance entirely to the presence of Peter Obi, warning that the party would collapse into obscurity without him.
Speaking on the shifting political alliances of April 2026, Fayose argued that Obi carries a unique “traction” that transforms any platform he joins. He pointed to the rapid rise of the Labour Party in 2023 as a blueprint, suggesting that the same energy has now migrated to the ADC.
“Peter Obi is the only ‘life’ in the ADC,” Fayose stated during a recent media appearance. “If he moves to the NDC today, no Nigerian will be interested in the ADC again. Just as it happened to the Labour Party, the traction will simply follow him wherever he goes.”
The remarks highlight a growing consensus that the “Obidient” movement remains the most significant threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). While the ADC is currently grappling with internal leadership disputes and a pending Supreme Court judgment, Fayose maintains that the party’s survival in the 2027 cycle depends solely on its ability to keep Obi at the forefront of its ticket.
Fayose also dismissed the current state of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as a “technically dead” entity. He predicted that the 2027 race would ultimately be a contest between the APC’s machinery and the personal momentum of Peter Obi, regardless of which party label he carries.
As of April 27, 2026, Obi continues to lead coalition talks with other opposition figures, further solidifying his position as the central figure in the challenge against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
