‘Shell’s Bonga boosted Nigeria’s 2023 production’

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd (SNEPCo) produced more oil at Bonga last year than the previous one, a review of operations has shown. Nigeria’s first deep-water development produced some 138,000 barrels of oil per day (boepd) in 2023 compared to around 101,000 in 2022.

Among other factors, the improvement was driven by drilling of new wells, optimising reservoir and facility management and excellent asset management.

“Bonga continues to justify the investments and hard work that led to its discovery,” said SNEPCo Managing Director Elohor Aiboni. “The uptick in production is the result of commitment by staff, continuous improvements in production processes and maintenance and the support of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPC) and our co-venture partners – TotalEnergies Nigeria Limited, Nigerian Agip Exploration and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited. Working together, we will continue to power lives and deliver value to all stakeholders.”

Bonga began production in November 2005 through the 225,000-barrels-per-day capacity Bonga FPSO, anchored 120 kilometres offshore. The FPSO exported the 1 billionth barrel of oil last year.

The operations have resulted in remittance of taxes and royalties to the Government of Nigeria to finance development, development of indigenous contactors and service providers, and a wide-ranging social investment portfolio which has improved lives across the country.

In Anambra, Two Reverend Sisters Remanded over Alleged Illegal Dealings on Children, Fraudulent Adoption

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Two Reverend Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church have been remanded in police custody by the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State capital.

The remanding came on Monday, following the arraignment of the Reverend Sisters — Angela Onyenachi Ibe (aged 42) and Chiemelie Jacinta Yvonne (Mother-General, aged 41), on a-4 count charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, punishable under sections 495(a) and 386 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 36, Volume II, the Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 1991, and illegal dealings on Children, as well as, fraudulent adoption, punishable under section 30(2)(b) of the Child’s Rights Law of Anambra State, 2004.

According to Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo; the defendants, to the satisfaction of the Honourable Court, each pleaded not guilty of the offenses when the charge was read to them.

“Responding to questions during the arraignment, the two Reverend Sisters stated that they both hailed from Imo State, and belonged to a Catholic Congregation, known as the St. Francis of Compassion, also based in Imo State; adding that they were staff members and attendants at the Sam Damian Community Children’s and Old People’s Home, located at Obosi in Anambra State,” Ikeanyionwu said.

She added the Counsel to the defendants, in a bail application on their behalves, prayed the Honourable Court to grant bail to the Reverend Sisters, on the ground that they are Reverend Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church, and would religiously attend their trials, whenever called upon to appear before the Court.

“Delivering a Ruling on the bail application, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Genevieve C. Osakwe, described the ground of bail application as very weak, and unknown to Law.

“The Honourable Court frowned at and vehemently bemoaned what she termed, the rising cases of illegal adoption and dealings on children, in Anambra State, and called on the security agencies in the state, especially, the police authorities, to extend their search, arrest and prosecution of all persons involved in the management of illegal Community Children’s and Old People’s Homes, across the state.

“The case was adjourned further to the 29th day of May and 26th day of June, 2024, for definite hearing, and the Court ordered that the defendants be remanded at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Awka,” she said.

Rivers: Fubara To Set Up Panel Of Inquiry Amid Crisis

Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has charged the newly sworn-in Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dagogo Israel Iboroma, (SAN) to set up a panel of inquiry that will investigate the affairs of governance in the state.

Governor Fubara who gave the charge shortly after the new Attorney General was sworn-in at the Executive Council Chamber of Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday, said the decision is to put the records and activities of governance in the state to put it in proper order.

The governor said the choice of Dagogo Israel Iboroma as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state at this critical time in the history of the state is to tap from his wealth of professional experience as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN) for the service of the state.

“Why are we bringing you at this critical time. We have a lot of issues around us. We believe that you are not going to be one that when they serve you with a matter, you will file a nolly or file something to kill us. Please defend us, because we know you are going to defend us. Your record is clean and you are a gentleman, peaceful and not a noisemaker. People like that are endowed and they have the fear of God.”

“There is also the major issue we are having. Since I assumed office, there is also a high number of garnishees, which I feel is deliberate. Please see what you can do to help us.”

Governor Fubara said the occasion marked the beginning of a new era in his administration as he has resolved to move forward.

While berating the former Attorney-General of the State, Prof Zacheaus Adangor, (SAN) for sabotaging the state and acting in most dishonorable way despite his averred claims of being a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Sir Fubara urged the new Attorney-General to defend the state strongly as there were legal battles (both economic and political) to contend with.

“I’m happy that you are already a SAN before coming here, it means that you must be a thorough man, it is not the type of SAN that sabotage government, who goes public to claim that you’re learned person, Chief law officer but went to appear before a magistrate court, going against the ethics of his profession.”

The governor noted that he had absorbed the barrage of abuses and insults hauled at him because he felt all the parties involved in the disagreement were of one family, necessitating a peaceful resolution of the matter, but there was no headway to the resolution.

“When I said I had a reason for being patient it is because I know that we’re from one family, and if there’s disagreement, no matter how bad it is, it should be resolved, but it has become clear that there is no headway to this disagreement. There is sabotage, deliberate attempt to sabotage this administration, for that reason we have to move forward and moving forward means taking decisions that is going to hurt any body.”

Sir Fubara also commented on the snipe making the rounds that he was a level fourteen officer in the civil service before he became the governor, stating that the statement was based on glaring ignorance.

“If in 2010, I was a Chief Accountant, where will I be before 2023. Because you want to impress your pay master, you talk carelessly. I won’t reduce my self to that type of talk, I’m the only Governor in the whole of the federation where local government chairmen abuse and I take it”

He further enjoined Rivers people not to allow themselves to be deceived and reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to dispense good governance in the state, stressing that as they claimed his choice was a mistake let them continue to make such mistakes while he served the people.

“But I wish them well, because even if it is a mistake by the special grace of God, I am here today. So, God doesn’t make a mistake. And let me also appeal to them to continue to make mistakes so that I can continue to be where I am, finish what I want to do for you people, leave with a good name, and my children and grandchildren will be proud of me. That is the mistake I want them to be making.”

The Organized Labour in Ebonyi State, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (NLC) has picketed the offices of Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in Abakaliki, capital city of Ebonyi State.
The Labour leaders blocked the NERC office at Nsugbe Street, Abakaliki, as early as 7:30am on Monday, chanting solidarity songs.
Organized Labour Shuts Down NERC, EEDC Offices In Ebonyi Over Increment In Electricity Tariff
Apparently aware of the picketing, the staff of NERC were not seen as their offices were under lock and key.
Undeterred by the absence of NERC officials, the labour leaders still blocked the entrance gate of the NERC office for about an hour to ensure no one gained entrance into the premises.
They later proceeded to EEDC office at Awolowo Street, Abakaliki, where the offices were also seen to be under lock and key.
However, the labour leaders were still unperturbed as they besieged the Awolowo EEDC office for an hour before they proceeded to the second office of EEDC located at Town Planning road, opposite Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, where EEDC staff were seen at their offices.
But the labour leaders immediately ordered them out of their offices and asked them to go home, maintaining that no work until their demands are met.
Our Correspondent reports that the EEDC staffs were immediately forced out of their offices by the Labour Leaders who quickly locked up the offices while chanting solidarity songs.
They were there for hours, making sure the EEDC staffs had gone home and no one coming into the office before leaving the place.
The labour leaders carried placards with inscriptions such as: The poor must breathe, the NLC/TUC demand that the new electricity tariff must be reversed, Nigerians say, no increase in electricity tariff among other inscriptions.
Addressing Journalists, the Chairperson, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ebonyi State, Comrade Professor Ogugua Egwu, said the picketing followed a directive from the National leadership of the organized Labour.
Egwu said Nigerians are tired of the inhuman policies of some government officials against the poor masses, adding that the recent increment of electricity tariff was an act of wickedness and must be reversed.
“We picketed NERC and EEDC offices and we made sure that the few people we saw were ordered to leave their offices. We made sure all offices were under lock and key. The managerial staff were not seen, perhaps they knew the organized Labour was coming with force. We are insisting that the poor must breathe and they must reverse the new electricity tariff which is to the tune of over 300% when workers salaries have not been increased in the past 5 years. The minimum wage is now a dead wage. The PMS pump price is alarming and they now want to increase electricity tariff. We say it’s not going to work”, the NLC Chairperson said.
On his part, the Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Chidi Igboji corroborated the position of Comrade Professor Egwu, maintaining that the new electricity tariff must be reversed immediately.
He said the Nigerian people are ready for a show down with any government official who wants to worsen the current suffering of Nigerians.
“Nigerians especially workers can no longer afford the prices of goods in the market, fuel price is almost N1000 per litre and NERC wants to impose another suffering in Nigerians by increasing the fuel pump price. We cannot allow this to happen. We must subject them to reverse it or this kind of action will continue”, Mr Igboji stated.

Southeast Nigeria Not Available For US, French Or Any Foreign Military Base, IPOB Warns Tinubu Government

0

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has warned against any plan by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to allocate any part of Southeast Nigeria to either the United States of America or France for the establishment of a military base.

IPOB issued the warning in a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful and made available to journalists on Monday.

Powerful stated that if the Nigerian government is interested in hosting US and French military bases, such bases should be moved to the Northern region of the country where terrorists are on a rampage.

He said, “IPOB intelligence unit MBranch revealed that Biafran territory will become very unsafe should the USA and French bring down their military bases in our land.

“The Nigerian government must understand that Biafrans do not have enough land let alone the one that will warehouse either an American or French military base.

“Currently, Biafrans are battling to curtail the terrorists groomed and sent to our region by Northern elders and their leaders.

“We don’t want terrorists to target Biafra Land because of US and French military presence.”

The IPOB spokesperson stated that unconfirmed reports claimed that the Nigerian government was in secret discussions with the French and US governments to set up their military bases in Nigeria “after being booted out from the Sahel regions of West Africa.”

He said if the Nigerian government succumbs to pressure and allows the establishment of US and French military bases in the West African country, it will regret the decision.

He said, “If Nigeria is unable to curtail the activities of the local terrorists, what will happen if the foreign terrorists see Nigeria as a potential abode or target?

“Unfortunately, the Nigerian Government has never taken her citizens into consideration in any decision-making and certainly will not consider their citizen’s safety in the decision of hosting foreign military bases as long as dollars are involved.

“If the Nigerian Government eventually agrees to allow the US and France to establish their military bases in Nigeria, let such military bases be sited in the Northern and Western regions of Nigeria.

“Northern and Western regions of Nigeria have the larger landmass and are borderlands between Nigeria and other West African countries.

“Moreso, Western and Northern regions have been hosting all the foreign institutions and projects for years and, therefore, should host the foreign military bases.

“The Eastern Region does not have sufficient land for developmental projects and agricultural programs let alone having space to warehouse foreign military bases.

“We wish to remind the US and French governments that Biafra Land cannot accommodate any military base. Yes, Biafra has IPOB leadership as leaders of the new Nation and whatever concerns our Nation must go through the IPOB movement’s leadership.

“We are making it very clear that our land is not available for any military base. Allowing any foreign military base in our land is an infringement to the Biafra status and sovereignty.”
