Imo: Residents Lament, Lawyers React Over Multiple Car Thefts In Owerri Court Premises

0

Two sad incidents of car theft inside court premises in Owerri, the Imo State capital within 21 days, has raised serious concern in several quarters about the escalating insecurity of lives and property in the state.

The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday, December, 17, 2024, when a lawyer, C.I. Amadi, parked his Toyota Camry 1999 model at the premises of the Magistrate Court ( Old High Court) along Orlu Road and went into the court to obtain a Judgment Order in his determined suit.

When he came back a few minutes later to pick up an item, it dawned on him that his grey coloured car with registration number, RLU 931 AA had disappeared from where he parked it a few minutes earlier.

Commenting on the sad development, the lawyer who was visibly disturbed, expressed disappointment and grief over the incident, pointing out that his laptop which contains details of most of his works was also in the car.

This recent incident which occurred barely 21 days after a similar incident which occurred on November, 27, 2024, when another lawyer’s Toyota Camry car was also stolen inside the High Court premises, along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri.

The two incidents according to a cross section of Imo people have raised serious concern about the porous security of lives and property in Court premises in the state.

Some lawyers who commented on the development said, the two scenarios highlight the need for the state government to find urgent solutions to the undesirable judicial sede vacante, which Imo Judiciary has been plunged into since the NJC-induced retirement of the immediate past Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Theresa Chukwuemeka-Chikeka, last month.

How I Was Kidnapped Twice For stopping sell of our Disputed Land — Community Leader

0

A community leader and Vice Chairman of Obunagu Achalla village inEnugu Agidi community in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state, Ozo Ozoemena Obiora Okeke has narrated a frightening plot allegedly by some of his kinsmen to kill him.

He disclosed that at the center of the grouse of those after his life remains his dogged fight to prevent them from illegal and corrupt sales of large acres of land belonging to the four villages that make up Enugwu Agidi town.

Speaking with newsmen at his country home, Obunagu Achalla, revealed startling incidents that led to his kidnap twice between last year 2023 and 2024, saying that it was God who saved his life, apart from payment of ransom to suspected Fulani herders.

Ozo Okeke disclosed that it was the evil scheme of four of his kinsmen led by Mr. Emeka Ementa and others allegedly working in secret alliance with suspected Fulani herdsmen to eliminate him by all means for being a stumbling block to their grand design to continue to appropriate parts of the land and sell same to highest bidders while the community and its people continue to wallow in abject poverty.

According to him, “My first experience was on October 17, 2023. It was the initial period the road in front of my house was being graded which they claimed that I sold the land to Ozo Jeff Nweke. This people invited the Fulani people to kidnap me so that I would bring out the money suspected to be paid for the land.”.

“I think this set of Fulanis are poor because they collected all my food stuff including garri, palm oil, salt among others. They discovered that I had only #22.00 in my bank account through phone and no other bank accounts. They wondered where the money they claimed that I realized from the land should be. They concluded it was mere allegation and I was freed.”

“The second invasion was in August 2024, after the peace meeting with my people, the Fulani kidnappers invaded my house again around 4pm that day and took me into the bush to Urum in Awka North local district before proceeding towards one shrine in Ukwulu. I stayed three days before they released me.”

But in a quick reaction, chairman of Obunagu-Achalla in Enugwu Agidi Community, Mr. Emeka Ementa on Thursday denied any link with Fulani herders to kidnap Ozo Ozoemena at any given time nor have any knowledge about the incident.

He admitted that the community at a meeting under his leadership agreed to suspend and ostracize Ozo Ozoemena and others for their sabotage of the corporate existence of the community by allowing with Ezinano Awka community on the controversial peace deal with Obunagu-Achalla village in Enugwu Agidi Community over their land.

“Well, I don’t have any contact with any kidnapping syndicate, I don’t even intend to. I am only saying that he (Ozoemena) should change his way of life; he has been known for this over years. The community only took normal cautions of the community to suspend him from our meetings and other activities. It was at a general meeting, not personal to me. So, I wouldn’t think and I never thought about that. Why would I kidnap him, for what?

“I have never heard of this kidnap of a thing. It is him forging this kidnap thing. It’s like a drama to me; it’s a forgery and I have not heard of it anyway. But Ozoemena has been known for this kind of behavior.

On the question of ancestral relationship between Ezinano Awka and Enugwu Agidi people over the land in dispute, Mr. Ementa explained that, “The land is called Agu-Nawgu because Nawgu people were living there before and part of it. After Nawgu was removed by the six communities of Awka, Isu, Enugwu Agidi, Nawfia, Amawbia and I think Okpuno. It’s a land gotten after a conquest and shared into six, everybody has theirs. Awka has their own and so are other communities.”

So, major part of that land is where Awka people are now contesting with us in court. The whole of that land, part of which of which is our ancestral land, they are joining both the ancestral land and that of Nawgu to the place they are dragging with us in court.”

“The court in it’s unanimous decisions gave it to us in three court sessions, the Awka court, High Court and Appeal Court.

“We are now asking the state government to use its good offices to intervene, because Enugwu-Agidi have suffered so much.”

Human rights lawyer and council to Biafran agitators, Sir Ifeanyi-Okite Ejiofor Esq, has lauded what he described as a tremendous ruling that incorporated the essence of justice and the rule of law carried out by the Abia State High Court in Umuahia when it discharged and acquitted five Biafran agitators who had been detained since their arrest on July 20, 2022.

He expressed satisfaction that the accused persons who faced charges of conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and membership of an unlawful society under Charge No: HU/61C/2022, were cleared of all allegations by the court.

The presiding judge of the court, Justice A.O. Chijioke had while delivering a judgment, discharged and acquitted the accused persons for lack concrete evidence from the prosecution and conquest of fairness and the rule of law.

The ruling followed the prosecution’s presentation of three witnesses, whose arguments were systematically dismantled by the defense team’s meticulous legal strategy and expertise.

According to Ejiofor, *the of the acquittal of the accused persons serves as a colossal exemplification of the steadfast dedication, professionalism, and strength of my character and my formidable legal team comprising Dennison Agu, Esq., and Head of Chambers Chinwe Umeche, Esq.”.

The defense team demonstrated unique precision and commitment to ensuring justice for their clients. Their collaborative efforts have once again shone a heliograph of hope for the pursuit of justice for the wrongfully accused”.

The case reinforces a universal principle: “True freedom requires the rule of law and justice and a judicial system in which the rights of some are not secured by the denial of rights to others”.

“Through their success in securing the acquittal of these innocent individuals, the defense team has not only protected the rights of their clients but has also upheld the core values of justice and human rights advocacy”.

“This is an incredible victory and a heliograph of hope for justice and fairness in the fight for the freedom of innocent detainees,” remarked Sir Ejiofor in a heartfelt statement following the ruling.

He reassured the public of his team’s continued dedication to ensuring the release of all innocent Biafrans detained across Nigeria.

“We deeply appreciate the hard work and dexterity of our legal team,” Ejiofor stated, adding, We will not rest on our oars in ensuring that justice prevails for all innocent detainees. We urge all Biafrans to remain peaceful and law-abiding as they pursue their legitimate and constitutional quest for self-determination”.

“This significant legal victory plus ultra the crucial role of advocacy in defending human rights and ensuring that justice is not denied. It stands as a powerful signal of the importance of a fair judicial system rooted in the principles of truth and accountability”.

As we celebrate this victory, it is clear that the ruling is not just a triumph for the acquitted but a sign of hope for countless others still fighting for justice. It reinforces the sturdiness of the legal system when guided by fairness and truth”.

Kudos to the entire legal team, whose bouncebackability and unyielding commitment to justice inspire confidence in the legal profession. Their courage and professionalism continue to set a high standard for advocates across the country”.

“This turning point serves as a reminder that while the fight for justice is far from over, the triumph of truth and the rule of law is inevitable when pursued with steadfast dedication. Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor and his team have once again proven that with diligence and integrity, the cause of justice will prevail”.

“As we extend compliments of the season to these tireless advocates, we hope this ruling inspires renewed faith in the pursuit of justice and the defense of human rights”.

EXCLUSIVE: Nigerian Education Fund, TETFUND Pays N325million To APC Party In Adamawa For Day-To-Day Running Of Activities

0

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) is in the middle of a major financial scandal after the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Working Committe confirmed recieving N325million from the Nigerian government agency to run the party’s day-to-day activities in Adamawa State.

The Bureau Newspaper learnt that the money from the education fund came to the APC state committee in payment of N25,000,000 monthly from October 2023 to October 2024 and is now a subject of controversy as some of the party leaders accused the others of embezzlement and management.

TETFUNF is a scheme established by the Nigerian government in 2011 to disburse, manage, and monitor education tax to government-owned tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

It is meant to be an “intervention agency set up to provide supplementary support to all levels of public tertiary institutions for the rehabilitation, restoration and consolidation of tertiary education in Nigeria.”

The Bureau Newspaper on Thursday obtained a petition from the Adamawa State APC women leader, Mrs Patricia Yakubu, to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, whom she refered to as “our leader in Adamawa State APC” where she confirmed that TETFUND sent monies to the party in the state but it was embezzled by some party leaders.

In the petition copied to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, President Bola Tinubu’s wife, Oluremi, and others, Mrs Yakubu explained how the state APC leadership had mismanaged and squandered funds meant to run the party and how she and others had been relegated from the party.

Her petition is titled, “A CALL FOR URGENT INTERVENTION: MONUMENTAL FRAUD, MISAPPROPRIATION OF PARTY FUNDS TO THE TUNE OF N500.000,000, NAME DROPPING, INTIMIDATION AND VIOLATION OF THE PARTY CONSTITUTION.”

Addressed to Ribadu, she said, “I wish to respectfully write, and as our leader in Adamawa State APC, to humbly draw your attention to some incessant violations of party constitution, injustice, monumental fraud and lack of matured leadership strides, being committed by few members of the State Working Committee, which might require your urgent intervention, despite your tight schedules, Sir:

“Ancillary Matters. Your Excellency, I now wish to draw your attention and seek for your intervention as our leader on. some very serious financial matters.

Corruption and Criminal misappropriation of Party funds:

a. Payment of =N=25, 000, 000.00 (Twenty-Five Million Naira) Monthly from TETFund started October, 2023 till October, 2024 totalling: Three Hundred and Twenty-Five Million naira (N325,000,000.00).

“The money is meant for running day to day party activities in and outude the state. The party account has been completely abandoned; the financial secretary has been removed as a signatory against the party constitution. Treasurer has been totally sidelined in all financial dealings. All Financial transactions are done through an individual account faccount details for investigation available).

“There was this time they collected three months at once totaling Seventy-Five Million naira (N75,000,000.00). Sometimes, these monies are paid through BDCs. All issues about these are kept secret by the Chairman, Secretary and Organizing Secretary, while some party executives and faithfuls are languishing in abject poverty, cannot afford to pay school fees, their children are home, some have died because they cannot afford hospital bills.

“b. Contracts from TETFund at FCE Yola and GMMC Yola for the benefit of the party was kept secret. They sold contracts and concealed the proceed. c. That sometime in December, 2023 the former minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, SAN, equally gave the Party Executives N15milliion Naira for Christmas but only Fifty Thousand naira (=N=50,000.00) was given to each Exco (which is less than million naira) therefore Forty Eight Million naira (N48,000,000,00) deficit unaccounted for.”

The state women leader continued in he revelation, adding that there is a plot to remove her from office and cover up all the atrocities and financial mismanagement.

“Plot To Remove Them. Your Excellency, please allow me to bring up another crucial matter here. Sometimes ago Aminu Bobboi put a call across to me that I signed a petition to remove the State Chairman, the State Secretary and the State organizing Secretary, which I know nothing about, I told him in very clear terms during the phone conversation. I reiterated to him that my role is to focus on improving the lives of our Party Women.

“Your Excellency, these two incidences are the key catalysts to the frivolous letter that J received inviting me to appear before a kangaroo disciplinary committee. The key objective Is to get rid of me as a State Woman Leader. So, I humbly plead to address these issues.

“Conclusion / prayers. Based on the above particulars of prima facie, pursuant to Article 21.3 (v) (a) of the Constitution of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) 2022 as amended, The Disciplinary committee as the case may be is under the obligation to recuse itself / seized with the original Jurisdiction to hear and determine the petition, thereby transferring it to the next higher organ of the party; currently there is total loss of confidence from the party faithfuls in the entire state, and orchestrated by the duo of the worst leadership under a cabal.”

News Point Nigeria gathered that the arrest was in connection to the latest Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report released by the Bureau on Tuesday.

Recall, this newspaper had reported that, the NBS released survey revealed that Nigerians paid a total of N2.23tn as ransom over 12 months between May 2023 and April 2024.

According to the survey, this sum was paid by households affected by kidnapping incidents, highlighting the growing threat posed by criminal activities in the country.

It added that, an estimated 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded across Nigerian households in the reference period.

The survey showed that the North-West region had the highest incidence of crime, with 14.4 million cases reported, followed by the North-Central region with 8.8 million incidents.

But a senior official at the Bureau, who pleaded anonymity told News Point Nigeria that Mr Adeniran was arrested by the operatives of the DSS, Wednesday morning in his office , less than 24 hours after the release of the report.

“As we speak, the CEO is still in DSS custody, the operatives invaded our headquarters, took away our computers and the crime survey documents and also arrested Mr Adeniran on Wednesday”, the source said.

“The CEO added about N2bn to our 2024 budget for the new Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report, and we got govt approval for the funds but after the conclusion of the report, which took a bout seven months, instead of liaising with the security agencies and the supervisory finance minister, Atiku Bagudu – the CEO went on to publish the report independently.

“We were told the president and the minister were not happy with the report because the survey was deemed to have embarrassed the govt and the security agencies especially in their fight against insecurity in the country.

“After the publication of the report, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu summoned a meeting with the finance minister and some top security officials in the country and afterwards there was an instruction to shut down the website and then the DSS raided our office and arrested Mr Adeniran”, the source added.

The Bureau disclosed this in a statement posted on the bureau’s official X (formerly Twitter) account Wednesday night.

The NBS urged the public to disregard any information or reports shared on its behalf from unofficial sources until the website is fully restored.

BSHA orders SUBEB chairman to step aside over recruitment investigation

0

The Benue House of Assembly, presided over by its Speaker, Hyacinth Dajo, ordered the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Grace Adagba, to step aside from her official duties forthwith.

The lawmakers took the decision during Thursday’s plenary to allow the house to investigate the recruitment exercise embarked upon by the board.

The resolution followed a motion moved by the Chief Whip, Mr Peter Ipusu (APC/Katsina-Ala West).

Ipusu said that the house had earlier adopted the resolution directing the chairman of the board to suspend the ongoing recruitment of primary school teachers to allow for investigation into controversies surrounding the exercise, but the directive was ignored.

The chief whip stressed that a day after the resolution was duly conveyed, the chairman released a statement indicating that new cut-off marks had been allocated to the various local governments based on their performance in the Computer-Based Test (CBT).

He stated that the board subsequently shortlisted additional names for physical screening.

Ipusu said that he was worried that the statement released by SUBEB was not only reactionary but also disparaging of the honour of the assembly and its resolutions.

Mr Alfred Berger (APC/Makurdi North), who seconded the motion, stated that the chairman lacked the integrity to continue to pilot the affairs of the board.

Berger added that the law establishing the board gave powers to the Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) to recruit teachers, emphasising that the process was decentralised and the department of quality assurance of the board only supervised it.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader Mr Saater Tiseer pleaded with his colleagues to give the chairman a fair hearing on the matter.

Tiseer added that the day she was to appear before the house, she was at the assembly by 10 am as requested.

He advised his colleagues not to make decisions based on prejudice, adding that they should take actions in line with the constitution.

The counter motion was seconded by Anthony Agom (PDP/Okpokwu), stating that the chairman should be allowed to explain herself.

The Speaker, Hyacinth Dajo, subsequently asked the Clerk, Mr John Hwande, to divide the house, and the members who voted in favour of the initial motion were 21, while five voted for the counter motion.

Dajo stated that the chairman should step aside and hand over to the board’s permanent member 1 to allow the house to carry out its investigation.

The speaker further constituted a seven-man committee to investigate the exercise and report to the house within seven days.

Governor Yusuf’s Intervention Saves Kano N4bn on Sponsored Students’ Liabilities in Cyprus

0

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has successfully negotiated a reduction of over N2 billion in tuition liabilities owed to Middle East University, Cyprus, for the education of state-sponsored students.

The intervention, which was disclosed during the 22nd Executive Council Meeting at the Kano Government House, reduces a debt inherited from the previous administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the liabilities, totaling over 3 million euros (approximately N4 billion), had been left unpaid by the Ganduje-led government.

The debt covered tuition fees for students sponsored by the state between 2015 and 2019.

Governor Yusuf, during a recent visit to the university, found that all the students had returned to Kano over five years ago without receiving their certificates due to the unpaid fees.

Among the 50 affected students were graduates who had completed advanced degrees in fields such as medicine and other professions, with some attaining the rank of professor but unable to practice due to the withheld documents.

During negotiations, the university initially offered a reduced amount of 1.4 million euros, but Governor Yusuf pressed for further concessions.

After two days of talks, the parties agreed on an additional 15% discount, bringing the final settlement to N1.9 billion.

“This intervention not only resolves a longstanding issue but also saves Kano State over N2 billion,” Dawakin Tofa said.

The Governor expressed dismay at the plight of the students, who have been jobless since their return, unable to utilize their qualifications.

He promised to personally hand over their certificates soon, marking the resolution of a problem that has hindered their careers for years.

Governor Yusuf also announced a new policy to ensure accountability in the future.

Cabinet Rejig: Decision taken in good faith, best interest of Kano’, Says Gov. Yusuf

0

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has again, dismissed untowards perception on the recent cabinet reshuffle that affected the office of the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the State Government and Five Commissioners.

Addressing journalists Wednesday during the state executive council meeting held at Government house, Governor Yusuf specifically refuted political insinuation being attached to the major cabinet shake up.

In a state issued by Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, Governor Yusuf who used the opportunity to debunk misrepresentation of government action, insisted the rejig was taken in good faith and in the best interest of Kano.

” In recent times, we made some decisions in the administration, including cabinet reshuffle. As a result of this action, some lost their positions in the cabinet while some reassigned to serve in another capacity. Let me remind the public that the action taken was in the best interest of the people of Kano”. Governor Yusuf added.

In the release, Governor Yusuf stressed that the need to drop some commissioners became pertinent to inject renewed energy that will strengthen policies of government.

Gov. Yusuf added that NNPP administration has pledged to deliver dividend of democracy, noted the urgency to effectively execute it’s campaign promises equally necessitated the replacement in the cabinet.

With the appointment of new seven commissioners who were recently screened and cleared by the state assembly, Governor Yusuf stressed that the cabinet is reinvigorated with fresh ideas to turn around social and infrastructural development of the state.

Although, the Governor notified those that were dropped from the state executive council would not be distanced from the administration, he assured of their reappointment to serve the state in another capacity.

“We have promised to deliver dividend of democracy to our people. Unfortunately we are already short of time to deliver what we promises. So, we need to effect changes to speed up in good time. We have reshuffled the cabinet in order to improve the system.

“Let me also say that we have not dropped those affected for life. We have other jobs for them, so I want everybody to accept the decision the way it is. As for those that were reassigned, we urged them to bring their previous experiences to bear in their new places of work”. Governor said.

Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf announced that the new commissioners would join the next executive council meeting and their respective portfolios would be announced.
