It was a moment of outpour of eulogies recently in Awka, Anambra State capital, as some top political figures in the state visited the state’s Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Headed by the Chairman of the State NUJ, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD; the gathering, which held at the Godwin Ezemo International Press Centre, Awka, was preceded by the February Congress of the Council, which was also its first Congress in the year 2023.

Addressing the state journalists, the candidate of the Young People’s Party (YPP) for Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Kingsley Chukwudozie Uyanmmadu commended them for their support and their balanced reportage as members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, which, he said, has gone a long way in recalibrating the minds of the citizens, re-moulding their political views, and making them better understand the situation of the country and the actions expected of them.

Popularly known as Otosi Achala, Hon. Uyammadu, who dissected the country’s problems, harped on the need for the citizens to get it right this time by electing quality and selfless leaders and lawmakers who have the required competence and knowledge to pilot the affairs of the country in a most efficient, effective and impactful way.

Fielding questions from journalists concerning his aspiration to represent the good people of Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Hon Uyammadu said he had personally prepared a realistic manifesto on what to do and how to do them when he emerges; even as he re-assured the constituents of quality representation and democratic dividends. He also described as unfair, the fact that it is only people from Awka South Local Government that have been representing the Awka North and South Federal Constituency for the past 20 years now; and harped on the need for equity and fairness.

While advising people to vote candidate based on his competence and not based on his political party, the YPP flag bearer also charged journalists not to relent on their duty of telling the masses the real truth, as many people depend on them to make decisions.

On her own part, the candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) for Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, Princess Ifeoma Mbakwe who also commended Anambra journalists for not compromising in the discharge of their duties, said her aspiration is driven by the passion to do things differently and positively, towards building a new Nigeria that every citizen would be proud of and happy for.

She introduced “SAFER” as the acronym that sums up her legislative agenda, which, she said, will also translate to security, empowerment, educational support, youths and women empowerment, quality laws and welfare schemes, both for the betterment of the people of her senatorial district, Ndị Anambra and Nigerians at large.

Princes Mbakwe, who said she is a proponent of a single term in office for political office holders, further revealed her intent to work with other like-minded lawmakers and stakeholders to cut down cost of governance in Nigeria when elected.

“The best bet for a country with such a debt problem like Nigeria is to cut down the cost of governance and reduce salaries and entitlements of political office holders so that funds will be available for other infrastructural developments,” she said.

Another guest at the event, the Head, Intervention Team of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr. Ifedi Okwenna re-emphasized the need for the people to shun political apathy and participate massively in the forthcoming general election to elect a competent leader.

He noted that the south-eastern region deserves to produce the next President of the country, as other zones have taken their shares since the country returned to democratic rule in 1999.

Dr. Okwenna, a former commissioner and governorship aspirant in the state, said Nigeria needs a president who has competence and compassion, which, he said, are found in the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.

“Nigerians need president with capacity, character, compassion, and who has the willpower to turn things around for the better; and the answer is in Peter Obi. Obi is one person among his contemporaries that can help Nigerians take back their country, and move it forward,” Okwenna said.

He also commended journalists in the state for their professionalism, while urging them to sustain the good work to continue improving and strengthening the democratic life of the country.

In his remarks, the Chairman of NUJ in Anambra, Dr. Odogwu appreciated the guests for identifying with the Union, while also assuring them that their messages will be widely publicised to you masses for maximum impact.

Press Release

ANOTHER RIVERS APC CAMPAIGN RALLY HAS BEEN ATTACKED BY AGENTS OF THE PDP

Early this Monday morning, a band of marauding thugs dressed in Police camouflage and riding in Hilux vans stormed the Umunachi community Rally ground for the All Progressives Congress Campaign in Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, pulling down canopies and vandalized vehicles parked at the venue. Eye witness accounts report the few Policemen on ground at the time of the attack as saying that they could not repel same since they were not only outnumbered but recognized some of the attackers as their colleagues who are attached to Government House, Port Harcourt.

This attack, though unprovoked, was not without notice. Ahead of the planned visit to Omuma LGA by the Tonye Cole/Innocent Barikor governorship campaign trail today, threats to attack and stop the gubernatorial candidate of the APC from campaigning in that LGA had been made by Hon. Kelechi Nwogu, Member representing Omuma Constituency at the Rivers State House of Assembly and PDP candidate for the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency at the February 25 elections, and the Omuma Council Chairman, Mr. Chisom Nwaiwu.

Consequent upon these threats, the Leader of the APC in Omuma LGA, Mr. Onyekachi Ojiegbe (alias Atiku) petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command to notify him of the impending attack. The Commissioner, it was gathered, minuted the petition to the OC Operations of the State Command who in turn detailed the Police Area Commanders at Oyigbo and Bori to swing into necessary preemptive action.

Unfortunately, even though three detachment of the Police were deployed to Omuma by the Oyigbo Area Commander, the dare-devil thugs invaded the Rally venue at dawn just after majority of the Police contingent left to refresh themselves ahead of the arrival of the State Campaign train. The said Rally venue was duly cleared by Mr. Ojiegbe in the face of the deprivation imposed on opposition political parties in the use of public school spaces for campaigns by the draconian, anti-democratic Executive Orders of the Nyesom Wike Administration.

The Rivers APC 2023 Campaign Council condemns this particular attack in no uncertain terms. This is one attack too many and an affront on the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by hooligans who missed their way to power. We have broken no law conducting campaigns across Rivers State. We have always complied with the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 and never forced our way into any public school or government facility for the purposes of campaign to warrant these provocative attacks. In fact, we have restricted ourselves to providing alternative venues for our candidates to speak to Rivers people.

It is incumbent therefore on institutions of State operating in Rivers State to bring this primitive ambush on democracy to a definitive end. In particular, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Okon Effiong Okon, should immediately order that Kelechi Nwogu and Chisom Nwaiwu be arrested to commence investigation of their roles in this attack this morning. Anything short of their arrest and prosecution is unacceptable to us and we hope that the Police Commissioner would not attend to this minimum demand with the same lethargy that previous attacks on our Rallies in Port Harcourt, Oyigbo and Opobo/Nkoro LGAs by these notorious elements were treated with that has given rise to the audacity and impunity for criminals to continue trampling on the fundamental rights of APC members to campaign in their own State.

With the 2023 elections only a matter of weeks away, we make a final call on the President and Commander-in-Chief to prevail on the Inspector-General of Police and Director-General of the Department of State Security Services to avert anarchy in Rivers State. We make this plea believing that our dear State cannot afford a resort to self-help by the APC and other opposition parties where the Police fails to act to protect the rights, lives and properties of our members.

Part of the measures taken by the governor to cushion the effects of the hardship caused by Naira swap development, he reveals that, “We will summon Bank managers very soon to interrogate the shortage of new Naira notes in banks.

They should come over and explain to us, why our people are still suffering over this issue of Naira Swap. And I will go to them individually to supervise what is happening and why.”

Governor Ganduje reminded that, during COVID-19 pandemic state government distributed palliatives to citizens across all the 44 local governments.

Over time, multitudes of problems bedeviling the people or the society generally, have been known to be solved by their respective leaders whom have listened to them with the commitment to serve.

The decision by His Excellency, the Governor of Kano State,Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to wade into the prevailing shortage of the new Naira Notes in the state with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem, should be seen in the above light.

Governor Ganduje announced the decisive move at Tsanyawa on Sunday while addressing a mammoth crowd of APC supporters and other residents of Tsanyawa and Kunchi local government areas,in continuation of the Gawuna/Garo governorship campaign and consultations.

He told the gathering that the State Government would very soon summon Bank Managers in the state to explain the prevailing shortage of the new New Naira Notes bedeviling the people.

The Governor’s announcement was contained in a statement issued to Newsmen on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abba Anwar.

“We will summon the Bank Managers very soon to interrogate the shortage of the new Naira notes in the banks, ” Ganduje, said, adding that the move was part of the measures being taken by the State Government to cushion the effects of the hardship caused by the CBN’s cash swap policy.

“Currency redesign is done across the globe, but not in the way we are witnessing in our country. The timing is wrong, the deadline given is very wrong and deliberate.

“They should come over and explain to us, why our people are still suffering over this issue of Naira Swap. And I will go to them individually to supervise what is happening and why,” Ganduje said, amid thunderous ovations from the large crowd.

The statement also said that Governor Ganduje accused the Governor of the Central Bank (CBN),Mr.Godwin Emefiele, of deliberately implementing the Cash Swap policy as a fight-back strategy for his failure to secure the presidential ticket of the APC.

It then said that the Governor reminded the people that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the State Government had distributed palliatives to citizens across all the 44 local government areas of the state.

He disclosed that this time too, the State Government has a plan to distribute palliatives very soon, across the 44 local government areas of the state to cushion the effects of the Naira swap.

“We have a plan in the pipeline to start distributing palliatives very soon across all the 44 local governments, to cushioning the effects of the hardship caused by the CBN Governor, to our people,” he said, adding that Kano State Government and APC in the state are totally against the action of the CBN Governor.

In his address at the palaces of the District Heads of Kunchi and Tsanyawa, also,Ganduje urged community leaders to enlighten people in their respective domains to know that, “the hardship people are facing is singlehandedly caused by the CBN Governor, to purposely cause confusion in our democratic process.”

“The CBN Governor is only doing this to cause confusion in the forthcoming elections for no just reason. He has not been in good mood for long, because he failed to secure the Presidential ticket on the platform of our great party, the APC,”the Governor added.

There is no gainsaying that the Governor’s move is timely as it is welcome; because it will cause the Bank Managers to buckle up and resolve the debilitating cash crunch so as to ease the sufferings of the people of the state.

Similarly, the planned palliatives of the State Government will go a long way in cushioning the effects of the Emefiele unpopular Cash Swap policy.Governor Ganduje is working!

According to the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, she was a Republican councilwoman.

New York Post gathered that Dwumfour, 30, was hit with about 12 gunshots by a yet-to-be-identified assailant while driving around her home on Wednesday evening.

The white Nissan SUV she drove crashed into two parked cars before coming to a stop.

A male witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told NY Post Thursday that Dwumfour’s car was hit with about 12 shots while traveling down Check Avenue toward Samuel Circle around 7:15pm.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop after crashing into two parked cars, including the witness’s black Lexus GS350.

Chilling Snapchat footage of the aftermath of the incident showed Dwumfour’s body in the car while first responders surround the scene.

The witness said: “It took a second before I realised there was a dead body behind the wheel.

“She was slumped over the wheel with a black hoodie with brown fur covering her head, her hands were down by her side. There was one bullet hole in the passenger door and a bunch of bullet holes in the driver door. Some other neighbors said they saw someone running away with a mask on.”

Some locals also told RLS Media that the gunman was spotted racing off to the Garden State Parkway, which edges the complex.

On Thursday afternoon, it was also gathered that 20 Sayreville police officers were spotted combing the sides of a Garden State Parkway exit ramp headed toward the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area.

Shortly after, investigators at the murder scene told reporters that Dwumfour was caught on video speaking to the shooter just moments before her death.

“The Republican councilwoman — who preached for a Nigerian-based church group — appeared to be the intended target, authorities told the outlet, stressing that there was no obvious motive.

“I heard what sounded like a few shots going off,” dog groomer Kristen Glanforf, who lives on Check Avenue, told The Post of the scene.

“I dropped everything and started running for my apartment. There was a car rolled down to the end of the hill, lights on. The doors were open.”

Community organizer Charlie Kratovil posted video of her SUV being towed away from the scene, and called it “a huge loss for the Sayreville community.”

“I personally knew her to be a very kind person and public servant. May she rest in peace.”

Dwumfour had served the Borough of Sayreville since November 2021, when she ousted the sitting Democrat in a shock election win. She was not up for reelection until 2024.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he was “stunned” by the news of the councilwoman’s death.

“Her career of public service was just beginning, and by all accounts she had already built a reputation as a committed member of the Borough Council who took her responsibility with the utmost diligence and seriousness,” Murphy said in a statement.

“I send my condolences to Councilwoman Dwumfour’s family and friends, her governing body colleagues, and the entire Sayreville community,” Murphy added.

Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said the whole community was also “shocked and saddened by the loss.”

“Eunice was a dedicated member of our borough council who was truly committed to serve our residents. The fact she was taken from us by this despicable criminal act makes this incident all the more horrifying,” she wrote.
