Elections in Imo: Rep wants INEC staff investigated

0

Rep. Kingsley Uju (PDP-Imo), member representing Ohaji-Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency of Imo, has called for the investigation of the activities of INEC staff in the constituency.

Uju, who made the call while addressing newsmen in Abuja, alleged that the INEC staff in the constituency connived with politicians to undermine the 2023 National Assembly polls in his constituency.

“My call is for INEC to invite the Returning Electoral Officer (REC) of Imo and all the INEC staff who worked in the constituency to ascertain what happened.

“I appeal to the INEC chairman that this is the time for us to reshape the class and quality of people we employ at INEC, either as Ad hoc or permanent staff.

“It is worrisome that the president and the National Assembly will make provision for free and fair polls only for the elections to be thwarted by people with questionable characters,“ he said.

The lawmaker said that elections were not conducted in many wards in the constituency as a result of insecurity and the late arrival of INEC staff.

Uju, however, alleged that there was a plot to generate results to favour a certain anointed candidate in the House of Representatives election.

He called on INEC chairman to reject results from wards where elections were not conducted, describing such as results as fake.

“In Oru West Local Government Area, elections did not hold in seven polling units.

“In Ohaji-Egbema LGA, elections were not conducted in six wards and so any result from those wards should not be accepted.

“Elections did not hold in five wards in Oguta LGA and that any result from the area should not be accepted.

“Also in Oguta LGA, elections were conducted in only three wards,” he said.

Uju, however, said that in places where elections were conducted, INEC should only uphold results as collected at the polling units and not the results allegedly manipulated by his opponents.

According to him, instead of accepting fake election results, INEC should cancel the entire Federal Constituency of Ohaji-Egbema/Oguta/Oru West and order fresh elections that would be free and fair.

The legislator alleged that his life was being threatened, noting that in the last two months, he had been attacked several times and also harassed by police officers.

Uju appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to caution the police authorities in Imo to stop the harassment and the intimidation of his supporters.

Thugs have invaded the collation centre for the Presidential and National Assembly elections for the Northern Senatorial District of Plateau and disrputed the result collation process

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that thugs invaded the venue on Monday and chased away the officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and others ad-hoc staff of the commission and halted the process.

Trouble started when the returning officer for the Jos North/Bassa constituency election, Nehemiah Sanda, asked party agents to sign the collated results.

The results indicated that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Musa Agah, scored the highest votes.

The Returning Officer for the Presidential election for Jos North local government area, Dr Lazurus Maigoro, confirmed the incident to NAN.

He explained that the situation had generated serious tension at the collation centre, adding that thugs hindered the announcement of results for the constituency election and that of the Senatorial District.

“Yes, it is true that thugs invaded our collation centre while we were doing our job. It is now up to the INEC to know what to do next”,he said.

Dr Oliver Agundu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the State, who also confirmed the incident, said he was yet to receive proper briefing on the matter.

”I wasn’t at the scene of the incident and I have been busy with the collation of results for the presidential elections in the state.

”But I will meet with my officers concern, get proper briefing and then act accordingly.

”But I want assure the people of Plateau that as electoral umpire, we will not do anything that will sabotage the peacful nature of the state,”he said

However, Rep. Dachung Bagos (PDP-Jos South/Jos East) has called on INEC to declare the results within 24 hours to avert any situation that would lead to impending crisis in Jos and environs

”Elections in Jos North/Bassa constituency were held peacefully and results were equally collated in a peaceful manner.

”I think declaring the winner of the election should not generate any tension, because all electoral processes were dully followed.

”So, I urge INEC to announce the results for constituency and that of northern senatorial district within the next 24 hours,”he called.

PeacePro cautions OBJ and opposition parties over attempt to scandalize INEC

0

…Says 2023 election may not be perfect, but it is an improvement on the past

A peace-building organization, Foundation for Peace Professionals also known as PeacePro has cautioned former president Olusegun Obasanjo and other opposition parties attempting to scandalize the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the 2023 presidential election.

PeacePro stated that, heating up the polity in an injurious manner, undue scandalization of INEC and outright misinformation, geared towards gaining political advantage is a great disservice to this nation.

In a statement by the Executive Director of PeacePro, Amb Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the group explained that, former president Olusegun Obasanjo is a statesman, who should be above political partisanship, but we find the statement credited to the former president shocking, owing to the partisan and dangerous nature of the statement.

Hamzat, who is a former Nigerian Ambassador to the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) maintained that, being a former president who has led the country in the past, Obasanjo should not be amplifying rhetoric and undue partisanship threat, under the guise of national concern.

“President Obasanjo should know better, being the president who was in charge during an election many considers the worst in Nigeria’s recent history.”

“The former president should not be amplifying dangerous rhetorics, capable of setting the country against itself” Hamzat said.

According to him, while the ongoing 2023 election is not perfect, the process is still an improvement on the past and there’s no part of the law that has been bridged by INEC to warrant such unnecessary scandalization.

Politicians should not seek to set the country ablaze due to personal consideration Hamzat said, adding that the recent insurrection in United States after America’s 2020 presidential election should serve as a lesson to all.

Amb Hamzat also prevail on opposition political parties to express their concerns and observation in a peaceful and legal manner.

He maintained that, irrespective of what any political party consider as infraction, the law can adequately address it if presented before it, adding that, resorting to threat and disruptive actions will not be in the interest of the nation.

He therefore, urges all parties to uphold the peace, as they had committed themselves to, in the peace accord signed by all political parties.

Labour Party Sweeps NASS Seats in Anambra, Retires Ekwunife, Odua, Nwankwo, Others

0

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

What could be described wind of political change has set in Anambra State, as candidates of the Labour Party (LP) have won majority of the National Assembly seats in the state.

According to verified results from different local government areas of the state, the Labour Party won two out of the three senatorial zones of the state, and also won six out of eleven Federal House of Representatives seats in the state.

This giant feat achieved by Labour Party may not be unconnected with the goodwill of the Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, whose final result the whole world now anxiously awaits to hear.

It is also worthy to note that this resounding victory of the LP in Anambra State will obviously retire many political actors in the state, especially two of the incumbent senators from the state — Senator Uche Ekwunife of the People’s Democratic Party (Anambra Central), and Senator Stella Odua of the People’s Democratic Party (Anambra North), both of whom lost their to their LP opponents.

Also silenced by the LP victories in Anambra are the wife of former Governor of the state, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano who contested for the Anambra North senatorial seat under the All Progressive Grand Alliance; the incumbent member representing the Anaocha/Dunukofia/Njikoka Federal Constituency, Hon. Dozie Nwankwo, who contested for the Anambra Central senatorial seat under the platform of APGA; among other top political actors.

Below is the summary of results of the Saturday’s National Assembly election in the state, which also highlights where the aforementioned political actors were floored and retired by the candidates of the Labour Party:
SENATE:
1). Anambra Central -Victor Umeh (LP).
2). Anambra North -Tony Nwoye (LP).
3). Anambra South – Ifeanyi Ubah (YPP).

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES;
1). Aguata – Dom Okafor (APGA).
2). Ayamelum/Oyi -Maureen Gwacham(APGA).
3). Anambra East/west – Aniekwe Peter (LP).
4). Anaocha/Dunukofia/Njikoka – Ozodinobi George (LP).
5). Ihiala – Pascal Agbodike (APGA).
6). Orumba North/South – Princess Chinwe Nnabuife (YPP).
7). Nnewi North/South – Uche Elodimuo (APGA).
8). Idemili North/South – Uchenna Okonkwo (LP).
9). Onitsha North/South – Emeka Idu (LP).
10). Awka North/South – Prof Lilian Orogbo (LP).
11). Ogbaru – Afam Ogene (LP).

Based on the above results which have sacked many APGA NASS members, one can now also safely argue that Anambra State is now a LP land, against what the current Governor of the state, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo usually says, that Anambra is APGA land. The narrative has obviously changed, with respect to the incoming occupants of NASS seats in the state and what the prospect holds for the Party’s candidates in the various State House of Assembly constituencies in the state, whose election holds in less than two weeks from today.

Anambra South 2023: Ifeanyi Ubah floors Azubogu, retires top Anambra political godfather

By Izunna Okafor, Nnewi

The senatorial candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) for Anambra South, Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah has floored and retired some top political actors from the zone as he emerged the winner of the keenly contested 2023 senatorial election of the zone.

Senator Ubah, who is the incumbent Senator representing the zone, was declared winner and returned by Prof. Ebele Nwokoye at the Anambra South result collation at Nnewi Nnewi Local Government Secretariat.

According to Prof. Nwokoye, the YPP candidate scored a total of 73,115 votes to win the election; and his closest rival, Hon. Chris Emeka Azubogu of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) polled a total of 45,369 votes; while LP and PDP got third and fourth positions with 28,102, and 21,209 votes respectively.

Speaking with newsmen immediately after he was declared winner, Senator Ubah said he returned all glory to God, while also appreciating the people of Anambra South for renewing the trust they repose in him.

“I want to thank, in a special way, members of my constituency for giving me the chance to serve them again. I promise to continue with our proactive and people-orientated policies with the aim to drive development in Anambra South Senatorial District,” Ubah said.

He also promised to consolidate on the giant strides made at the 9th Senate, by ensuring that the people are given the needed dividends of democracy, through legislative interventions in the district.

By his victory, Senator Ubah will be going to the Red Chamber as a ranking member, having been at the Senate since 2019. He had proved his political heftiness when he became the first Senator to win senatorial seat under YPP —a hitherto unpopular party — in the history of the country.

How youths beat Anambra political godfather to stupor for attempting to snatch ballot box

0

By Izunna Okafor, Nnewi

A self-acclaimed political godfather in Anambra State and Senatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the Anambra South senatorial district, Chief Chris Uba has received the beating of his life, as irate youths captured and rained hands on him for attempting to snatch ballot box at the Zone’s result collation centre in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was alleged that Chief Uba and the senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the area, Hon. Chris Azubogu stormed the collation centre with some thugs to snatch the ballot box, disrupt the result collation and also falsify having perceived that they are on the losing side in the just-concluded senatorial election, which was being won by the incumbent Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young People’s Party (YPP).

Their arrival at the collation centre and the consequent heavy gunshots that erupted in the area were said to have made journalists, supporters and even INEC officials to scamper for their safety.

According to reports, Azubogu has invaded the secretariat with thugs and forced his way into the collation centre, where he and Chris Uba had hijacked ballot papers that were being counted, and were about to move out of the premises, when Ifeanyi Ubah who had been alerted quickly stormed the area, blocking them from leaving.

This was said to have caused heavy gunfire, with Ubah gallantly confronting Azubogu and dispossessing him of the results he was about to make away with.

A source at the scene said: “Chris Uba was not lucky, as many voters and youths in the area gave him the beating of his life, after Ifeanyi Ubah intercepted his vehicle and took the materials he had confiscated.

“He ran out of his vehicle and the supporters used the opportunity to catch him. Azubogu was luckier as he refused to step out of his bulletproof vehicle.”

In his reaction on the incident, media aide to Hon. Azubogu, Mr. Emeka Onyia insisted that his principal was only at the secretariat to submit a petition.

7 vehicles Smashed As PDP NASS Candidates Chris Uba / Azubogu Accuse Sen Ubah Of Assassination Attempt

0

By Okey Maduforo Awka

7 SUV Vehicles were smashed at the Anambra South Senatorial District Collation Center Nnewi when the duo of People’s Democratic Party PDP candidate Chris Uba and All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA candidate Chris Azubogu allegedly escaped death .

According to Chris Uba , Sen Ifeanyi Ubah ordered his security operatives to shoot him and Azubogu for coming to the Senatorial election collation center to stop him from rigging the election.

“I came to the collation center and had visited some polling units where they were voting without accreditation with BIVAS and I said no we must follow the Electoral Act”

“Ifeanyi Ubah had concluded arrangements to manipulate the election by not using the BIVAS and at the Collation center Nnewi I saw Ifeanyi Ubah and later I was in my SUV when he came and was hitting his hand at my vehicle asking me to come down”

“When I came out of my vehicle he pushed me and asked me why I have come to Nnewi and I told him to hat it is a Senatorial center and he started shouting to his security operatives to shoot me and Chris Azubogu”

“They started shooting any how and beating up people and look at my four vehicles; they shot the tires and came to attack me and Azubogu and we had run for our lives and on the way my SUV fell into a ditch ” he said

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to disqualify Sen Ifeanyi Ubah for thuggery and attempted assassination.

But Senator Ifeanyi Ubah through his aids Kameh Ogbonna alleged that ;

“The conceited attempt by the duo of Chris Uba and Chris Azubogu to hijack the collation process last night and relocate it to Awka in a clear bid to mutilate the ward results in their favour and declare a false electoral outcome boomeranged on their faces last night as they scampered to safety after they were roundly accosted by an angry mob of youths that trooped out to defend their votes.”

“The news that the incumbent Senator is cruising to massive victory in the Senatorial polls conducted on Saturday 25th February 2023 is presently trending in the entire Senatorial District since the conclusion of the polls on Saturday.”

“It took the intervention of the youths who quickly mobilised others and flooded the collation centre in their numbers to quell the attempt and restore nomalcy to the tensed situation.”

Media Assistant to Azubogu Mr Chris Macon dismissed Ifeanyi Ubah claims contending that Sen Ifeanyi Ubah actually attacked his boss and Chris Uba .

“Last night, an attempt was made on the life of the 2023 APGA Candidate in last Saturday’s Anambra South senatorial election on the express orders of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah who ordered his gang of thugs, to the hearing of all, to kill Azubogu (a ranking sitting legislator representing the good people of Nnewi North, South and Ekwusigo federal constituency in the House of Representatives) if he stepped out of his SUV.”

“That was after they had shot and punctured the tyres of Azubogu’s SUV.”

“While the above scenario was playing out, Sen. Ubah’s thugs in their numbers were shooting sporadically into the air; perhaps, in an attempt to provoke DSS operatives attached to Rep. Azubogu into reacting; but the operatives were professional to the core in resisting the provocation’

Azubogu had arrived the INEC office earlier to submit a petition to the Electoral Officer, which he did in the presence of the Nnewi North TC Chairman.

“As though he sensed that this will happen, Azubogu had, before the election, written the NSA, DG – SS, The IGP and the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo on the need for all candidates to commit to peaceful conduct during the elections”

“On the day of the election, he was seen moving from one polling boot to another in Nnewi trying to intimidate and deter opponents’ supporters from voting their preferred choices.’ he said
