DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has received reports of a merchant vessel being struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
According to security alerts issued by maritime authorities, the incident occurred during an outbound transit, causing a fire in the vessel’s engine room and at least one casualty among the crew.
Emergency Response and Search Operations
Search and rescue operations were initiated immediately following the distress call from the vessel’s security officer.
Responders from the Omani Coast Guard arrived at the scene to render emergency assistance to the remaining crew members onboard. Initial assessments confirm at least one reported crew casualty alongside structural damage to the engine room.
Following the strike, maritime monitoring agencies urged all commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity to naval authorities.
Escalating Tensions in the Strategic Waterway
The attack comes amid heightened friction along the strategic maritime choke point.
The southern transit corridor near Oman has seen recurring threats from projectile strikes, uncrewed aerial vehicles, and electronic disruption targeting commercial shipping.
Naval authorities have not officially released the flag state or identity of the affected vessel, and investigations into the source of the projectile remain active.
