MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA — In a major intelligence breakthrough in the war against insurgency, the Nigerian military has captured a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) foreign operative—believed to be a Moroccan national—in the remote Lake Chad basin of Abadam Local Government Area.
The high-profile arrest follows a failed, highly coordinated attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Cross Kauwa, a strategic town in Borno State’s Kukawa Local Government Area. The development points to an active and deeply entrenched foreign advisory and logistics network directly supporting local jihadist affiliates.
How a Slain Terrorist’s Video Footage Blew the Network Wide Open
The arrest was made possible through battlefield forensics. During the intense gun battle at Cross Kauwa, troops of Operation HADIN KAI neutralized an insurgent cameraman and recovered a high-definition Sony camcorder from his body.
A preliminary forensic analysis of the recordings, conducted in collaboration with international intelligence partners, yielded a goldmine of strategic data:
- The Foreign Trainers: The footage explicitly showed foreign jihadist trainers operating within the Lake Chad enclaves.
- Identified Suspects: Among those captured in the video was a Palestinian national serving as a tactical trainer, and a Moroccan national operating under the guise of a medical doctor for the insurgents.
Equipped with the facial data and locations extracted from the device, troops launched an aggressive “exploitation and pursuit” operation. This led forces to Abadam LGA, where the suspected Moroccan national was intercepted and taken into custody.
The Battle of Cross Kauwa: A Desperate Search for Supplies
Military sources reveal that the initial ISWAP assault on Cross Kauwa was driven by desperation. Moving under the cover of darkness, dozens of heavily armed fighters attempted to infiltrate the town with the primary objective of looting medical and cholera treatment supplies to treat their sick and wounded fighters in the marshlands of the Lake Chad islands.
However, the military responded with overwhelming firepower, repelling the infiltration and inflicting heavy casualties on the invaders.
- Equipment Recovered: Fleeing insurgents abandoned several items of military-grade gear, including High-Frequency (HF) and High-Handheld (HHR) radios.
- Casualties: While several terrorists were neutralized, two Nigerian soldiers sustained injuries during the fierce exchange of fire and have since been evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment.
Air Force Airlifts High-Value Suspect for Interrogation
Given the high-stakes international implications of the arrest, the Moroccan suspect was immediately airlifted by a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter from the frontlines to a secure, high-integrity military interrogation facility.
“This is a massive breakthrough in our ongoing efforts to dismantle ISWAP’s foreign support infrastructure,” a senior military commander, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told reporters. “The presence of North African and Middle Eastern operatives within our borders has long been suspected, but the recovery of physical video evidence and the subsequent arrest of one of the actors confirms the global linkages we are actively fighting.”
Dismantling the Sahel-Lake Chad Corridor
For years, regional defense analysts have warned of a dangerous “jihadist corridor” connecting ISIS affiliates in the Sahel to the Lake Chad Basin. The deployment of Moroccan and Palestinian specialists to Borno State suggests that despite losing significant territory, ISWAP continues to rely heavily on foreign technical, medical, and tactical assistance.
With the Defense Headquarters intensifying operations in the northernmost parts of Borno State, the capture of this foreign operative is expected to provide invaluable intelligence regarding ISWAP’s financial networks, recruitment pipelines, and their channels of communicating with the central ISIS leadership.
