KATSINA, NIGERIA — A heartbroken mother from a rural community in Katsina State has shared a harrowing eyewitness account of a midnight assault by armed bandits that left her husband and infant child dead, and five other family members—including a newborn baby—abducted into the forest.

The tragedy, which highlights the terrifying reality of life in Northwest Nigeria, has fueled deep public anger over the Federal Government’s apparent inability to secure rural taxpayers. Critics argue the administration has shifted its focus to early maneuvering for the 2027 political cycle while leaving vulnerable border communities entirely unprotected.

“They Killed My Husband and Shot the Baby”

Recounting the raid with immense pain, the traumatized survivor described how the heavily armed terrorists breached their home in the dead of night, shooting indiscriminately to suppress any local resistance.

The bandits targeted her husband immediately, executing him in front of the family. When the mother attempted to shield her children, the gunmen opened fire into the darkness, killing one of her children instantly.

Before withdrawing back into the thick forest channels, the marauders systematically rounded up five other members of the household. Among those dragged into captivity was a tiny baby, leaving the grieving widow alone amid the blood-soaked ruins of her home.

A Glaring Security Failure Amid Tactical Claims

While defense headquarters and state commands frequently publicize kinetic achievements—such as the recent interception of a massive 300-motorcycle bandit convoy by the air component of Operation Fansan Yamma—the reality on the ground remains a disaster for ordinary Nigerians.

Public Outrage Over Government’s Shift to Politics

The sheer brutality of the attack has sparked fierce criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration from civil society groups and regional stakeholders. Security analysts argue that the Federal Government has lost its grip on the country’s internal security crisis because its attention has shifted entirely from governance to raw politics.

With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, federal lawmakers, state executives, and cabinet ministers are increasingly preoccupied with internal party mergers, cabinet realignments, and political survival tactics.

Meanwhile, the operational funding, tactical coordination, and intelligence-gathering systems required to dismantle bandit camps across the North-West remain severely under-resourced.

Local community leaders warn that unless the presidency stops treating national security as a secondary concern, more families will be torn apart. Taxpaying citizens are being left entirely at the mercy of brutal warlords, while the government they elected remains focused on retaining political power in Abuja.
