ABUJA — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has held a critical closed-door meeting with the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, following a public uproar sparked by the senator’s remarks regarding presidential credentials and party supremacy.
The high-pressure diplomatic intervention follows an explosive interview by Dickson on Arise TV, where he asserted that nobody—including Peter Obi—is “more qualified” than him to run for the Nigerian presidency. Dickson further declared that the newly formed NDC was doing its high-profile candidates a “favour” by providing a free platform for the 2027 race.
Rather than engaging in a public media battle, Peter Obi led a delegation of senior opposition figures to Senator Dickson’s residence in Abuja, opting for direct internal diplomacy to douse the widening flames within the opposition alliance.
Amicable Resolutions and Strategic Calm
The extensive meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, was attended by key NDC stakeholders, including Senator Victor Umeh and Professor Pat Utomi. Both leaders reportedly reviewed the post-primary friction and the aggressive media clashes between Dickson and members of the “Obidient Movement”.
Following the lengthy deliberations, Senator Dickson issued an official statement confirming that all brewing operational and verbal crises within the opposition platform have been completely put to rest.
Following the meeting, Senator Dickson confirmed that they “amicably resolved all the issues” regarding recent concerns within the party.
Moving Past the ‘Favour’ Controversy
The friction stemmed from Dickson’s remarks that the NDC provided its tickets to candidates without financial demand, which drew backlash from supporters. Despite social media rebuttals, the face-to-face meeting aimed to de-escalate tensions and maintain unity for 2027.
A Call to Cease Fire
Following the meeting, Senator Dickson urged all party members to end internal disputes and focus on strategic goals, signaling a new, unified phase for the party.
