ABUJA — The landscape of Nigeria’s opposition politics has undergone a seismic shift as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) moves to consolidate its position as the primary challenger to the ruling APC, effectively capitalizing on the total leadership collapse within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Far from the previously rumored alliance, the relationship between the two parties has turned into a survival of the fittest. The NDC, led by Senator Seriake Dickson, is now actively absorbing the remnants of the ADC, which remains paralyzed by a bitter factional war and unresolved litigation in the Supreme Court.

The Binani Defection and the ‘Great Migration’
The NDC’s momentum reached a fever pitch on May 2, 2026, when former governorship heavyweight Senator Aisha Binani officially dumped the ADC to join the NDC. Binani’s exit is seen as the first of many high-profile departures, signaling a lack of confidence in the ADC’s ability to resolve its internal crises before the 2027 electoral cycle begins in earnest.

Sources close to the opposition leadership indicate that the “Great Migration” is only beginning. Both Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are widely expected to finalize their defection to the NDC within the coming week. Kwankwaso has already sent a clear signal to his supporters, urging them to abandon the ADC ship, which he described as being in a “precarious and unworkable” position.

Leadership Crisis Paralyses ADC
The ADC’s downfall stems from a protracted legal battle over its chairmanship, with factions led by David Mark and Ralph Nwosu still locked in a stalemate. While the party remains stuck in the courtrooms, the NDC has seized the initiative, positioning itself as a structured and “rescue-ready” alternative.

The NDC has not been subtle about its intentions. In recent public statements, the party’s leadership has openly taunted the ADC, inviting disillusioned Nigerians to join what they call the “stable platform for national redemption.” By offering a clear hierarchy and a defined roadmap, the NDC is effectively rendering the ADC’s coalition efforts obsolete.

With its eyes firmly on the presidency, the NDC has announced an aggressive timeline for its operations. The party is set to hold its maiden National Convention in Abuja on May 9, 2026, where it is expected to formally welcome Obi, Kwankwaso, and other defecting heavyweights. Following the convention, the party will move directly into its primary elections, scheduled to commence on May 22.
As the ADC continues to fragment, the NDC is no longer just a “third force”—it is rapidly becoming the sole umbrella for an opposition desperate to present a unified front against President Tinubu’s administration.
