KANO — Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, OON, has raised questions over the grassroots presence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, noting a total absence of the party’s presidential campaign materials in the ancient city.
Ahmad, who visited the commercial nerve center of Northern Nigeria for the Eid celebrations, revealed that while the city is flooded with campaign posters of incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the NDC’s presence remains completely invisible.
Taking to his official social media handle on Thursday, the former aide remarked on the sharp contrast in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“I have been in Kano for the Eid celebrations, and one thing I observed is quite interesting,” Ahmad stated. “Across the city, I haven’t seen a single poster of the NDC presidential aspirant, while President Tinubu and Gov. Abba K. Yusuf’s posters are visible on almost every street and major junction.”
The observation has sparked intense discussions among political analysts regarding the strength of the newly formed opposition mega-party in crucial northern voting blocs. Despite high-profile defections and aggressive national mobilization by the NDC structure, the party appears to face a significant branding hurdle in Kano, a state traditionally known for its high political awareness and massive voter turnout.
Local observers note that the visible dominance of President Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Yusuf’s New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) indicates that the two established parties have already locked down key structures, leaving the emergent NDC with a steep uphill battle to establish its footprint before the 2027 polls.
