PORT HARCOURT — The battle for the Brick House took a dramatic turn yesterday as an elder brother to the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election.
He threw his hat into the ring under the platform of the rapidly growing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This development sets up a direct political confrontation with the political structure of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and further fragments the volatile political landscape of Rivers State.
Speaking to journalists during his declaration at the NDC state secretariat in Port Harcourt, the aspirant stated that his decision to run was driven by a need to protect the state’s resources and free it from decades of political godfatherism. He added that the NDC represents the only viable alternative for Rivers people seeking genuine liberation and economic development.
The entry of Governor Fubara’s sibling into the race has sparked intense calculations within the state. Political analysts note that his candidacy under the NDC could split traditional voting blocs in the state, potentially serving as a proxy battlefield for the ongoing supremacy war between the Governor’s camp and the Wike-led faction.
With the NDC national leadership already granting high-profile waivers to heavyweight politicians across the country, the party appears to be positioning itself as the primary vehicle for aggrieved political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections.
