A Joint Task Force (JTF) on security killed six suspected gunmen on Saturday during an operation along the River Niger creek in Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The gunmen, who had reportedly terrorized Amiyi community and neighboring towns, were targeted following days of intelligence gathering that led security forces directly to their hideouts.

The joint team comprised personnel from the Nigeria Police Force (Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu), the Department of State Services (DSS), the 302 Artillery Regiment (Onitsha), the Nigerian Navy (Ogbaru), and local Agunachamba community operatives.

Acting on credible intelligence, the team trekked for about four hours through dense palm forest and difficult terrain to reach the encampment. Upon sighting the approaching forces, the gunmen opened fire, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire.

Six suspects were neutralized during the encounter, while several others fled into the surrounding bush with gunshot wounds. Operatives recovered two pump-action guns and various charms before destroying the camp and surrounding structures.

The operation, however, came at a cost. One security operative was killed and another injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), believed to have been planted by the criminals, detonated. The wounded operative is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the courage, resilience, and professionalism of the joint team and local operatives. He highlighted the operation as a clear victory for inter-agency cooperation, actionable intelligence, and community support.
