ABUJA, Nigeria — Popular broadcaster and human rights activist Ahmed Isah, host of the Brekete Family radio program, has accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of extorting money from families of kidnapped victims in the Mpape community of the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking during a live broadcast, Isah alleged that police personnel demanded ₦250,000 from the traumatized families as a prerequisite to assist in tracking and rescuing their abducted relatives.
According to the broadcaster, the victims’ families managed to raise and hand over ₦100,000 to the officers. However, upon collecting the funds, the police operatives allegedly abandoned the operation and instructed the families to go and negotiate directly with the kidnappers to secure the release of their loved ones.
The allegation has sparked widespread public outrage across the Federal Capital Territory, raising fresh concerns over police conduct, accountability, and the handling of kidnapping cases in rural communities surrounding Abuja. FCT police authorities have not yet issued an official response to the specific claims made by the broadcaster.
