Uzodimma Move To Abolish Imo Polytechnics Campuses Except One In His Omuma Home-town

0

Signs indicate that under Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma’s leadership, the Imo State government is considering consolidating the Imo State Polytechnic into a single-location campus, potentially situated in his hometown of Omuma.

Originally established in 2007 with a campus in Umuagwo Ohaji, the Imo State Polytechnic later adopted a multi-campus system under the administration of Owelle Rochas Okorocha, with additional campuses in Orlu, Ehime Mbano, and Amaimo for the Owerri zone. However, while campuses in Orlu and Okigwe zones were operational, the Owerri zone campus remained undeveloped until Uzodimma assumed office.

In a move seemingly aimed at relocating the Imo Poly to his native Omuma, Governor Uzodimma transferred the nuclear campus from Umuagwo Ohaji to Omuma and established a University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), while retaining the Orlu and Ehime Mbano campuses.

Reports suggest a larger plan to abolish the Orlu and Ehime Mbano campuses, consolidating operations solely in Omuma. This initiative is reportedly championed by a lawmaker, with a proposed amendment to the Imo State Polytechnic Law number 15 of 2012 being considered by the Imo State House of Assembly.

The swift progression of the bill through first and second readings in the House indicates political maneuvering, with supporters suggesting that the goal is to centralize the Imo Poly’s operations for improved management efficiency.

However, achieving this vision may require amending the law to grant the governor the authority to designate Omuma as the sole location for the state-owned polytechnic. Advocates argue that a single-campus structure would streamline administrative processes and enhance operational effectiveness for the Imo Poly.

3,000 Members Resign As PDP Begins New Page Without Ihedioha In Imo

Despite the significant departure of members, including Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s leadership in the state is actively working to restore equilibrium and chart a path forward.

As part of these efforts, a meeting was convened at the party’s office during the week to assess recent developments and strategize for the future.

Following the removal of the state chairman, Chief Charles Ugwu, an interim chairman, Chidi Dike, has been appointed to lead the party in an acting capacity, aiming to stabilize its operations.

In response to the loss of members, the PDP in Imo has initiated efforts to identify replacements for state, zonal, and local government area (LGA) officers, who have resigned in large numbers.

To commence the process of rebuilding the party in the wake of mass resignations, interim appointments will be made for ward, LGA, zonal, and state officers until formal elections are held in August, coinciding with the national party’s electoral procedures.

Furthermore, the party is leveraging media platforms, including social media and e-communications channels, to counteract the impact of Ihedioha’s departure and reassure the public about the party’s stability.

Newly appointed party officials, such as Hon Bede Ojimmadu, the financial secretary, and Mrs Aguwamba Esther, Acting State Woman Leader, recently appeared on a radio station in Owerri to address concerns and emphasize that there is no reason for alarm.

The Patty’s focus is on rebuilding the party structure and mitigating the repercussions of the mass resignations, demonstrating a commitment to overcoming challenges and fostering unity within its ranks.

It could be recalled that over three thousand members of the party have resigned, opposing the decision of the NWC for appointing caretaker leadership in the State.

A source revealed to our correspondent that Chief Ihedioha and his co- Political travelers are moving to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) where they already secured a deal three months ago.

Meanwhile, another source from the Labour Party revealed that Ihedioha is leading his team to the LP for a serious opposition to APC in the State, in preparation for his 2027 Imo Governorship interest.

Actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu Mourns Mr. Ibu, Jnr Pope, Others, Appeals for Tinubu’s Intervention in Nollywood Industry (Video)

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Veteran Nigerian actor, Sir Dr. Bob-Manuel Udokwu, has lamented that many people in the Nollywood industry make society happy but regrettably go home sad.

The Anambra-born actor disclosed this in an exclusive interview with this reporter, Izunna Okafor, over the week in Awka, the Anambra State capital, during which he also mourned and expressed his sadness over the recent deaths of some Nollywood stars, including Mr. John Okafor (Mr. Ibu), Amaechi Muonagor, Jonh Odonwodo (Junior Pope), Zulu Adigwe, and others.

While recounting his relationships with these movie stars, he described their deaths as painful and touching, especially considering the situations that resulted to the deaths and the circumstances surrounding them. The actor, though, opined that the trend of deaths is not peculiar to the Nollywood industry alone, adding that people die everyday, only that the deaths of Nollywood stars appear to ring bell and attract much attention and public reactions, because of their celebrity status.

“I really commiserate with their family members. But the industry can really do nothing.

“Seriously, the industry can’t do much for them, except probably raise funds and all that. That’s why it’s always painful to me that when our people fall sick, or when certain misfortunes come, we go to the public to beg for funds. It shouldn’t be that way. It shouldn’t be,” said Hon. Udokwu, who is also the Special Adviser on Entertainment, Leisure and Tourism to Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Reflecting on the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate deaths of many Nollywood stars in recent times, which he said depict a society where nothing works; the veteran actor also regretted that many entertainers, especially people in the Nollywood industry, make the society happy but go home sad.

“Why do the public think that there’s so much money in Nollywood, yet most times when our people fall sick, you see people raising funds for them on social media? Are they that well-remunerated? It’s a question. It’s something to ponder about,” he said.

According to him, although many people in the Nollywood live fanciful and ostentatious life (probably because of societal expectation on them), they also suffer the same hardship many other Nigerians suffer and are also affected by the general economic in the country.

“In fact, the pain everybody goes through, we even go through more, because people make countless requests of us simply because they us as film actors. Are we paid differently from every other person? No. Or, are we paid in foreign currency? Of course not,” he said.

While noting that the pay of an A-list Nollywood actor for a major role in a movie cannot even buy a coffee for an actor of the same level in America, Sir Udokwu, who also also recounted his experience few weeks ago in London and Manchester where Nigerians over there celebrated his birthday for him, further regretted that Nigerian actors are usually relegated by the government and not regarded in their country, compared to other countries where they are seen as great ambassadors.

“They see us as ambassadors over there, because everything that people know about Nigeria comes from Nollywood and football…,” he said.

He further called for government’s intervention and attention on Nollywood industry to work out ways to assist the practitioners in the industry, to, at least, to live above board.

“I may be saying this to indict some people in terms of leadership and governance, and control about things that we do in terms of work. Nollywood is an industry that came out of virtually nothing, when we did Living in Bondage, which was released in 1992, which effectively started what we know today as Nollywood.

“You know, it’s still a work-in-progress. But I think it is high time government took more interest in what is happening in Nollywood. I’m not advocating for government takeover, because if government takes over Nollywood… They will bring quota systems. And entertainment and sports are not where you do quota systems. They are purely driven by talent,” he said.

Asked how government should come in, the veteran actor said, “There should be some level of government interest and control administratively. We can work with government on this. We have practitioners in the entertainment industry who studied various other things.

“So it’s not a question of bringing in outsiders to come and regulate the entertainment industry. No, our people can work with government to put things in place, checks and balances, things that ought to be done so that we don’t, in one fell swoop, lose like six people, avoidable deaths, you know,” he said.

He described President Bola Tinubu as a lover of entertainment, while also calling on him to do something concrete for Nollywood.

“Please, Mr. President, do something concrete for the entertainment industry,” he appealed.

Continuing, he said, “Sometimes, we hear in the pages of newspapers about monies, voting, certain banks where you can access loans. How many of us access those loans? You want to give creative industry works on creativity, you don’t need to ask them to bring an arm and a leg as collateral. Their collateral is their creativity.

“So, there needs to be a system where creative people can access funds, public funds from government, and be able to do their work, earn their keep, and then pay taxes and also return government money; and the economy progresses while living standard improves.

“This can be worked out if government is serious about the entertainment industry. It should be done before everybody runs away. Although, as for me, I’m not going to run away. We’ll be here. We’ll be here.”

Why Imo Governor, Uzodimma Appointed Self As Commissioner For Lands

0

Governor Hope Uzodimma has appointed himself as the Commissioner for Lands, Survey, and Physical Planning in Imo state.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during the inauguration of new commissioners at the Government House in Owerri.

The governor said he appointed himself to the position to prevent any corruption scandal as it happened in the past.

In November 2023, Governor Uzodimma suspended the state Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Physical Planning, Noble Atulegwu.

A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Cosmos Iwu, disclosed that the suspension was with immediate effect.

The governor later ordered the arrest and detention of Atulegwu over alleged land grabbing and other related matters.

He was detained at the police headquarters in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

The sacked commissioner was released after spending over 40 days in police detention.

Imo: Controversy Mars Emeka Ihedioha’s Move To Labour Party

From Joshua Chibuzo Andrew

Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the last election in Imo state, Senator Athan Achonu, and his supporters have allegedly rejected the defection plan by the resigned former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha.

Information available to Impartial Observers has it that the Senator made his stands known weekend when the Abia State Governor, Alex Oti drew his attention to the move.

It can be recalled that few days after his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha made entreaties to join the Labour Party, ostensibly to be in charge of the party’s forthcoming Ward, LGA, State and National congresses.

An insider source disclosed that Ihedioha was during weekend paid an unscheduled visit to the Abia state Governor, Alex Oti ahead of his rumoured defection.

Regrettably, the source revealed that the Abia state Governor, Oti was worried that Ihedioha neither, informed, visited the Labour Party Governorship candidate in the 2023 election in Imo state, Senator Athan Achonu, since after his resignation nor invited him to accompany him on the visit.

He maintained that Governor Oti made it emphatically clear that since Labour party respects dedication of members, and contribution to party development, it would amounts to injustice to dissolve the structure of the party in Imo state because of new entrants.

According to the source, in ensuring that his meeting with Ihedioha was not misinterpreted, Governor Oti was said to have connected Senator Achonu on phone to get his comment on Ihedioha’s proposed defection.

Painfully, the source revealed that Senator Achonu vehemently rejected Ihedioha’s move to join the party, citing his overbearing influence in any party he belongs, including his alleged arrogance to leaders, adding that his comment in far away Ghana describing anyone who voted Peter Obi in the presidential election as saboteur remains afresh and capable of destroying the party’s reputation.

Meanwhile, Senator Achonu has allegedly called on Ward and Local Government Exco of Labour Party in Imo state not to panic over their positions, assuring them that no new comer would ever unseat them.

Achonu was quoted to have said, “I am one armed General, I defeated a retired General with one arm, the issue of Ihedioha coming to create havoc in our party can’t be tolerated. We shall do everything possible to disgrace them. Labour Party is not PDP where one person claimed to be the owner of everything before he was pursued. This time, we shall deal decisively with them squarely as the event unfolds”

In Anambra, Decomposing Corpse of Lady Who Died After Smoking Colos Gets Relocated Close to School Environment by Residents, May Explode Soon

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Findings have revealed that the abandoned corpse of the yet-to-be-identified lady who reportedly died in Awka, Anambra State capital, after smoking Colorado (popularly known as Colos) is still there along the road where she died.

Recall that an unidentified lady died after she was said to have repeatedly smoked the psychotropic drug (Colos) in Awka.

The incident happened on Sunday off the Winners Church Headquarters in Awka, along the UNIZIK Junction — Y-Junction Okpuno Road, very close to a mechanic workshop. Some eyewitnesses had earlier claimed the corpse was had been evacuated.

However, this reporter, Izunna Okafor, who visited the scene on Tuesday morning (today), discovered that the corpse of the lady is still there along the road, and already decomposing, with flies perching around everywhere, while her eyeballs have already popped out.

While earlier reports claimed that the corpse had been evacuated, although, speculations abound that the corpse was only relocated (over the night) from the place where she actually died (close to the Y-Junction) to the current location (close to Winners Church) where she is now dumped, which made the people to think that the corpse had been evacuated by her people, without knowing it was only moved a bit downward along the same road.

This might have been done probably by people living close to the place where the corpse was before, to avoid causing trouble for them. The current positioning of her hands and the look of the environment also attest to the fact that the corpse was actually relocated from where it was before.

The current location and position of the corpse
The previous location and position of the corpse

This reporter also gathered that, from the look of things, the already-swollen corpse, which is already causing discomfort in the entire area, may explode anytime soon, if not evacuated, thereby causing more nuisance and discomfort for the residents and road users, including the school children whose school is closely located to the scene.

Some of the residents, who pleaded anonymity, joined their voices to call on the Anambra state government and relevant authorities to please save them the impending doom by urgently evacuating the swollen corpse before it explodes.

Reports have it that the lady acted in strange ways before finally giving up the ghost.

It was gathered that the she became unconscious and started misbehaving after smoking the dangerous drug, even to the point of perambulating the street stack naked.

This, eyewitnesses said, made some sympathizers to hold and assist her with a cloth to cover up her nakedness. The sympathizers were also said to have fed her with enough soaked garri to douse the effect of the substance on her.

It was however, reported that shortly after she began to regain her consciousness, she went and smoked the Colorado again, which eventually led to her collapse, downfall and consequent death along the ever-busy road, where her corpse still lies till date.

When contacted by this reporter, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, pledged to reach out to the concerned authority on the issue.

Imo: PDP G7 Members Left In Limbo As Governor Uzodinma’s Cabinet Takes Shape

0

From special correspondent

The fate of the seven Imo PDP G7 members who defected to the APC ahead of the November 2023 Governorship election hangs in the balance as Governor Hope Uzodinma’s new cabinet excludes them from appointments.

Despite their pivotal role in mobilizing support for the governor’s reelection bid, none of them have been deemed worthy of a cabinet position, sparking speculation among Imo residents.

Previously appointed as Special Advisers, the G7 members now find themselves sidelined, raising questions about their loyalty to the governor or their perceived capability to serve the state.

While some insiders suggest that they may have been rewarded with supervisory positions during the initial three-month period, the absence of their names in the new cabinet fuels skepticism.

Both PDP and APC sources offer contrasting views on the situation. A PDP caucus member, speaking anonymously, criticizes the G7’s decision to defect, questioning the wisdom of joining a ruling party that has yet to demonstrate significant achievements.

However, an APC chieftain defends Governor Uzodinma’s track record of rewarding loyalty and speculates that the governor may have future plans for the defectors.

As Governor Uzodinma’s second tenure administration takes shape, the Imo populace remains vigilant, eager to see if the G7 members will still find a place within the government or if they will be left on the political sidelines.

Young Lady Dies After Smoking ‘Colos’ in Anambra (Video)

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

A yet-to-be-identified lady has reportedly died in Anambra State after allegedly smoking Colorado, a psychotropic drug, popularly known as “Colos” — the eponym for the popular slang “On Colos”.

The incident reportedly happened over the weekend in Awka, the State capital, where the lady was said to have repeatedly smoked the psychotropic and acted in strange ways before finally giving up the ghost.

This was corroborated by a video and voice note currently trending on the social media about the incident.

While the video shows the lifeless body of the victim lying close to the Y-Junction Axis of the UNIZIK Junction-Okpuno road, the masculine voice note of an eyewitness that accompanies it explained that the she became unconscious and started misbehaving after smoking the dangerous drug, even to the point of perambulating the street stack naked.

This, the eyewitness said, made some sympathizers to hold and assist her with a cloth to cover up her nakedness. The sympathizers were also said to have fed her with enough soaked garri to douse the effect of the substance on her.

It was however, reported that shortly after she began to regain her consciousness, she went and smoked the Colorado again, which eventually led to her collapse, downfall and consequent death along the ever-busy road.

Her corpse was also said to have been taken away by her people after some passersby recognized her and invited her family members, who came and evacuated her corpse.

When recently contacted by this reporter, Izunna Okafor, the State Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra, Mr. Daniel Onyishi described such incident as one of the numerous inherent dangers and consequences of drug abuse and how it destroys the youths.

According to him, Colorado is a psychotropic and one of the dangerous drugs that have rendered and still render many people useless in the society, adding that ‘colos’ is also addictive, while its effect is instantaneous, as it flows straight to the bloodstream, affecting one’s mental wellness.

The NDLEA Boss said that such things are what the Agency has been preaching against through its various sensitization programs in secondary schools and other public places in the State, including through the radio program “NDLEA and You” which holds from 11.am to 12.pm every Tuesday on ABS 88.5FM.

“That is why everybody should stay off drugs and join us to fight drug abuse. If you know anyone who uses or deals on drugs, make NDLEA know. People should not be harbouring such persons or take drug as a business,” Onyishi emphatically stated in a telephone interview with this reporter.
