Financial Experts Predict Nigeria’s Unemployment Rate Will Increase

0

BY SULE TAHIR.

Recent findings by National Economic Indices has projected that Nigeria’s unemployment rate has been projected to rise further to 40.6 percent in 2023.

This according to KPMG, a professional services firm in its report titled ‘Global Economic Outlook’.

The professional services firm said the figure is based on its estimates.

As at fourth quarter (Q4) of 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said the country ‘s unemployment rate stood at 33.3 percent .

“Unemployment is expected to continue to be a major challenge in 2023 due to the limited investment by the private sector, low industrialization and slower than required economic growth and consequently the inability of the economy to absorb the 4‐5 million new entrants into the Nigerian job market every year,” KPMG said in the report.

Although lagged, the National Bureau of Statistics recorded an increase in the national unemployment rate from 23.1% in 2018 to 33.3% in 2020.

“We estimate that this rate has increased to 37.7% in 2022 and will rise further to 40.6% in 2023.”

KPMG projected that Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) would continue to grow at a relatively slow pace of three percent in 2023.

This, it said, is due to the slowdown in economic activity that typically characterises periods of political transition in Nigeria.

The firm said the spillover from an expected slowdown in the global economy and its trade and financial flows implications are likely to drag on the country’s GDP.

Those Calling For Interim Government Will Be Put To Shame – Ohanaeze

0

BY SULE TAHIR.

The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said the agitation for an interim government was satanic and unconstitutional.

But, the agitation for an interim government had resurfaced again; though many Nigerians believe that there is no basis for such a move.

Isiguzoro urged the Department of State Services, DSS, to arrest those behind the clamour for an interim government.

A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Chief Olisa Agbakoba, had also noted that there was no constitutional provision for an interim government in Nigeria, and therefore dismissed the idea as total hogwash.

Commenting on the issue, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Yekini Nabena, said those agitating for an interim government were not serious citizens of this country.

Nabena wondered why the DSS had not arrested those behind the call for an interim government and a possible return of the military regime.

Nabena said: “The problem here is- who are the people calling for the interim government in the first place? Nigeria has gone beyond this. Anybody calling for an interim government is not a serious citizen of this country.

“After Goodluck Jonathan lost the election, he had every right as the sitting president to take such a step but because of the peace of the country, he put the people first.

“Nobody should be talking about an interim government or people saying the military should take over. Why is the DSS announcing such? Did they announce before they arrested Nnamdi Kanu? DSS should have arrested these people and later tell us the reason for arresting them. Is it not after arresting Kanu that they told us?”

Recall, on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, Information Minister, Lai Mohammed accused the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed of making treasonable comments, an allegation Obi described as totally malicious and fictitious.

A few days ago, the Department of State Services (DSS had raised an alarm that some persons were plotting an interim government in Nigeria ahead of Tinubu’s swearing-in.

The secret police said it had identified some key players involved in the plot.

DSS said the plot for an interim government is a mischievous way to set aside the constitution, undermine civil rule and plunge the country into an avoidable crisis.

FG’s naira redesign policy almost grinded our businesses to a halt, Anambra traders lament

0

By Chuks Eke

Traders in Anambra state, under the aegis of Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, ASMATA have decried the level of agony they are passing through since January, this when the federal government introduced the naira redesign policy and cashless economy.

They lamented that the exercise has almost grinded their businesses to a halt as they now find it very difficult to buy goods and supply to their customers, owing to the scarcity of cash and instability in banking services and its attendant lack of network.

Patron of ASMATA, Chief Jude Nwankwo who made the lamentations in his office at the Building Materials International Market, Ogidi, Anambra state, said no minding that the policy has not achieved any desired target, traders were the worst hit as they could hardly access the cash to buy their goods adding that in most cases, banks would debit their account without crediting the account beneficiaries and vice versa.

According to Chief Nwankwo who is also the President of the Building Materials market, “the naira redesign policy was just an ill wind that blows nobody good as Nigerians were subjected to unprecedented hardship in the name of naira redesign policy, cashless economy and vote buying prevention”.

“We are not yet matured for cashless economy. Many people don’t even know how to operate the handset and other machines that will help them to transact their businesses”.

“Queues are much in the banks even till date and there is network problem which frustrates the transfers of money and banks also dispense very meagre amount, some N5,000 or N10,000 to each customer after waiting in the long queue for a day. Many sick Nigerians died in various hospitals for lack of adequate Medicare arising from acute scarcity of cash”.

” I think things are getting better now because they said the banks are now paying more than they were paying before but the queues still persist and the network problem is still there,” he lamented.

On the alleged illegal revenue collectors operating in Anambra state, Nwankwo described the situation as worrisome, adding that it was in a bid to avoid these touts in the building materials market that the traders deposited as much as N30 million to the State Government, as Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, to prevent touts from coming into the market to cause confusion and disaffection in the name of collecting IGR from the traders for state government.

He noted that they considered the payment of the N30 million IGR in advance into the state government ciffers as an imperative following the criminal activities of most touts who in the guise of IGR collectors, would commit one crime or another.

“We paid the N30 million for us to be collecting the loading and off loading of vehicles IGR on behalf of the State Government because we considered these touts as armed robbers and right from when I assumed office as the President of the market, I never wanted them. They are the same people that rob at gun-point, kidnap people and commit all manners of atrocities”.

“These are people sacked from the roads by the State Government and allowing them to come into the market to collect revenue on behalf of the State Government will be risky. Government has even suspended the collection of levies on vehicles for loading and off loading in the markets at the moment and as such our money is hanging”.

“We want the Government to refund us since the levy collection on vehicles in the market has been suspended for now,” he stated.

He commended Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’ for his relentless efforts in fighting crimes and criminality in the State pointing out that he has been able to checkmate crime to the barest minimum.

“Since the Governor came in, crime has reduced drastically. We need peace in Anambra and I think the Governor has asked those jobless youths to come up and learn a trade. If the youths are kept busy there will not be crimes unless from those who are born criminals,” he stated

Also on the launch of Clean Green Sustainable Anambra that was flagged off by Governor Soludo’, at Ochanja market recently, he said it was a welcome development as it would make the State to be clean.

“Desilting of the gutters is a welcome development and roads are being rehabilitated in the State by the Governor. I condemn throwing of waste into the gutters and offenders if caught will face the wrath of the law,” the PG affirmed.

Stop These Your Nasty Attacks, Obi Warns APC, FG, Others, Says He’s Undeterred

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has warned the ruling All Progressive Congress and the APC-led Federal Government of Nigeria to desist from what he described as nasty attacks on him, in attempts to smear or run down his personality.

Obi, issued the warning in a statement on Wednesday night on his Twitter handle, in which he also broke silence on the trending leaked audio conversation between himself and the Founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo.

While stressing that the audio conversation is doctored and fake, the former Anambra State governor also revealed that he is being pressured to leave Nigeria, with the various attacks against his person, emanating from different quarters.

While referring to the recent comments of the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed,  alleged that the All Progressives Congress and the APC-led government are doing everything possible to “divert our attention from our blatantly stolen mandate,” which he said is “unfortunate and sad.”

He wrote, “The present attempts by the APC as a party, and the APC led-government through some government officials and agencies to divert our attention from our blatantly stolen mandate is unfortunate and sad.

“These have come and continued to manifest in different ways, such as the malicious accusation of the Minister of Information, Mr Lai Mohammed, the circulation of a fake doctored audio call, and a pressure on me to leave the country.

“Let me reiterate that the audio call being circulated is fake, and at no time throughout the campaign and now did I ever say, think, or even imply that the 2023 election is, or was a religious war.”

Obi also vowed to take legal actions against the online news platform that shared the leaked audio.

He maintained that before, during, and after the campaign, he focused solely on issue-based campaigns about a new Nigeria with a shift of emphasis from consumption to production, characterised by inclusion, justice, equity, fairness, and prosperity, adding that he “repeatedly stated that no one should vote for me based on tribe or religion.”

“The attempts to manipulate Nigerians is very sad and wicked. Our legal team have been instructed to take appropriate legal actions against Peoples Gazette and others.

“While we call on all concerned Nigerians and the International Community to implore the APC and the APC-Led government to stop their nasty attacks, my focus and commitment to lawfully and peacefully retrieve our mandate to secure and unite our Nation.

“Elections are over, and we are in court to retrieve our stolen mandate. Let me reiterate that we are doing so through all lawful and peaceful options in line with our legal system and constitution, and I continue to implore all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law abiding,” Obi added.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammed, on Tuesday had said that Obi and his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed, risked being prosecuted for treason over some of their utterances on the February 25 presidential election, stating that the duo were inciting people over the outcome of the poll.

Benue Gov-elect meets Buhari, says “Benue is in ICU”

President Muhammadu Buhari has met with the Benue State Governor-elect, Hyacinth Alia, at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Wednesday.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the closed door meeting with the president, Alia frowned at the condition of the Benue State civil service.

According to him, the state’s civil service is in a state of near collapse and in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but he has come to infuse life into it and keep it moving.

Alia noted that the state owes backlog of salaries, pensions and gratuities and he hopes to remain focus and tackle the myriad of issues on his desk when he takes over office on May 29.

Asked if he would be probing his predecessor against the backdrop of his letter to the Benue Investment Property Company, warning them of financial transactions with the incumbent governor, Alia said:

“I haven’t looked at the books, so I wouldn’t want to be quite preemptive. Once I’m sworn in, I know that what the good people of Benue want is progress and development.

”And there’s so much that we need to put on track for things to work. Benue state is an agrarian zone and so we must focus on agriculture and upgrade it.

“Benue is very capable of feeding the whole nation, so we are not just the food basket of the nation by name and I am hoping that we will up our game in agriculture and take care of the rest as well.

“It is sad that the life of civil service in the state is near collapse, it’s in the ICU, so I just need to get in there and infuse life in it and keep it moving.

”We have a lot of backlog of unpaid salaries, pensions and gratuities. So, already I got much on the desk to keep a good focus on and I remain hopeful that I am going to do just that.”

The governor-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), commended President Buhari for making a firm decision for the elections to take place.

On the animosity that pervades the state over the anti-grazing law, Alia said: “One thing must remain clear, when you say that the atmosphere was quite tensed, let it be on record that the Benue people are very hospital people.

”We are very friendly people and over the ages, we’ve lived all cultures and different people. And so if some mishap had happened in the last eight years, thank God the eight years has expired.

“I want everyone to feel that Benue is a home for everyone. Remember, before I am stepping in there as a governor, our history reveals that we have all cultures in Benue and so it is, we have all cultures in Nigeria in Benue.

”So I believe my time will not be any different. If there were some errors, I am coming to correct them.

”But I know for sure we are hospitable, we are friendly and the Benue State Assembly is also a knowledgeable Assembly.

”So the 10th Assembly is going to work for the people and do the work of the people. If by chance anybody perceived us to be a hostile state, please we are a renewed hope of Benue, a hospitable, friendly, law and order people.

”So, we are all welcome to Benue as we move in there.”

NAFDAC seals shops in Abuja for allegedly selling unregistered aphrodisiac

0

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday in Abuja sealed two shops for allegedly selling unapproved products to Nigerians.

The shops are located in the Zuba Central motor park and Utako main market.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the unregistered products said to be aphrodisiacs are: “Hajiya Ayesha Snuff, AK47, Bulletproof, and Hajiya Aysha Maisanda.

Mr Tamanuwa Baba, Deputy Director, investigation and Enforcement directorate, NAFDAC, said the operation followed intelligence reports received about the shops.

“The products are meant to boost sexual performance and some were said to have been manufactured in Ghana.

“NAFDAC laboratory analysis indicates that these products contain a chemical substance called Pyridine which is a potentially harmful to the human body.

“We found a lot of unregistered products in the two shops. We will begin immediate investigations ,” he said.

Baba said that the agency has apprehended the sales representative in the Zuba shop pending when the owner of the shop will return from his journey.

“We will get in touch with the owner of the shop on where he is sourcing these products from, but from the label on the products, some of them were allegedly manufactured in Ghana.

“What the sellers are saying is that these products usually make them high and some said that the product is used as an aphrodisiac.

“After the investigation, these products are going to be destroyed because they have not been registered by us.

He said similar set of products were also discovered in a shop at Utako known as Kabo Investment Limited.

The view of the shop in Utako main market

He said that it was scary that  some of the products have flooded the Nigerian market and that they are fast spreading because the agency conducted a similar operation in Sokoto where some of the products were removed from a shop.

“I can tell you that  Pyridine which is the chemical that is contained in some of these products can cause cancer, skin irritation and even lead to death.

Jostling for the soul of Abia – By Okechukwu Keshi Ukegbu

Less than two months to May 29, when incoming administrations are expected to take over from the outgoing ones, there is raging battle between the incoming administration of Dr Alex Otti and outgoing administration of Gov Okezie Ikpeazu(PhD) of Abia State. This situation is posing serious concern to followers, analysts and watchers of Abia politics who are worried that this may affect a seamless and harmonious transition. An analyst is of the opinion that” the fight is too early and uncalled for and may affect the capacity of the incoming government to deliver on its mandate.
At the center of the fight,  which has generated exchange of intense media blows from both camps, is the purported Court Exparte  Order freezing the state accounts with  various financial institutions.
Since then, the media spaces have known no peace as both parties have engaged in sucker and counter sucker punches. Abia State Government was the the first to throw the punch through its Commissioner for Information, Barr. Eze Chikamnayo. In a release, the state noted that its attention has been drawn to what it desribed as”a mischievous,  contrived and careless Court Exparte Order purporting to shut down the Government of Abia State through the freezing of all  its accounts in various financial institutions”
The release further reads”This  thoughtless move by misfits ostensibly acting a mendacious script written by a cowardly cacophony  of  overzealous political turncoats  is aimed at grounding the Government and  in so doing  instigate civil unrest in Abia State.
“As always,  close allies and lackeys of  the Governor  – elect, Chief Alex Otti and their Media accolytes have been openly celebrating  this mutinous , devilish and deliberate act of subterfuge thereby lending credence to the belief in some quarters that this is a judicial coup d’etat: targeted at subverting the Government and or it’s institutions in a manner not provided for in the Constitution. As we all know,  no arm of government has a lawful right to ground the other for any reason whatsoever.
“Moreso,  a  newly elected Governor should know that he was elected for  4 years and cannot interfere in the Administration of an incumbent !  Respect for rule of law and constituted authority is a prerequisite for being a Democrat. Talking from both sides of the mouth , sending conflicting signals,  saying one thing publicly to appear sanctimonious while copiously being fingerered as the one actively instigating the opposite behind the scenes and all  such acts of duplicity are not the temperament  required for such an exalted office”.
Chikamnayo noted that” ironically, as people who are primarily out to settle personal scores, elements  within the  Labour Party  are now spurning this statesmanship of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu while  making statements  that  butress the notion that they have been merely seeking  office to selectively cheery pick key opposition political players for vendetta and persecution”.
He(Chikamnayo) is worried that id the situation lingers,”sooner than later,  the atmosphere of peace and security carefully sustained, enjoyed and even taken for granted by some Abians will suddenly evaporate – giving way to a new wave of killings and  persecution under  the gestapo style of an  imperial impetuous leadership This disaster, foretold by all well-meaning members of the Abia Community is now unravelling , albeit too quickly,  before our very eyes”.
In a swift reaction, Otti”s camp, through the Governor-elect”s Media Adviser, Ferdinand Ekeoma, denies involvement in the act.
According to Ekeoma,”The Abia Governor-Elect, Dr. Alex Otti is neither insensitive nor cowardly. He is not known for acting through subterfuge and thus could not have initiated such an action in secrecy, and in a manner that would affect the welfare of Abians, especially workers.
“For accusing Dr. Alex Otti falsely in a bid to misrepresent him and mislead the public, the governor-elect will now get involved to get to the root of the matter, since the outcome would affect his administration which takes effect from May 29, 2023.
“Abia state government should be bold enough to tell the world that those they entered into fraudulent contract with and tried to shortchange before leaving office were responsible for the litigation. Is it a difficult thing for the failed Okezie Ikpeazu led-government to publish the court documents for the world to see?”
Some quarters are highly bothered and are not comfortable with the allegations that some contractors are responsible for freezing the accounts. They are of the opinion that this smells a rat of Governor-elect, Dr. Alex Otti’s camp of being privy of transpired. They are of the opinion that such speculations are not palatable coming from a camp accused of masterminding the actions.
What generates more sensitive concerns among well-meaninh Abians is the allegation that the incoming government is on vendetta. Majority opinions are calling on the incoming government to a retreat if the allegations are founded or prove the state government wrong id the allegations are unfounded through its subsequent actions as to retain the confidence of the Abia populace.
All the same, whether the incoming Dr. Alex Otti’s government is on vendetta or not, remains a puzzle which unfolding events can only resolve.

Indict Tinubu Under Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act

April 5, 2023

PRESS RELEASE

Contact: Professor Pat Obiefule; Mr Chijike Ndukwu, Chief Franklin Ekechukwu – info.nacjd@gmail.com

Letter to;

  • Joe Biden, President of the United States of America
  • US Congress
  • Secretary Tony Blinken, US Department of State

Theme: NIGERIA: Democracy under Siege-our case and demands!

The soul of Nigeria whose Diasporans constitute one of the largest immigrant contributors to the US economy, is under heavy attack by a political party turned terrorist organization, the All Progressive Congress (APC). The democracy of the largest growing economy in Africa is in grave danger. Our democratic principles and practices are being brazenly raped. The evidence is overwhelming.

During the presidential and National Assembly elections that took place on February 25, 2023, non-APC voters, were grossly disenfranchised by the APC-led government, APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Yakubu Mahmood and some other party chieftains like River State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Mr. Tinubu (who was convicted of narcotic charges in Chicago and not qualified to contest the election) engaged the services of the APC terrorist thugs to attack non-APC voters and disrupt the voting exercise. The thugs carried away ballot boxes, tore voters ballot papers, injured some voters, and killed some.

INEC brazenly violated the electoral laws and their own rules by failing to upload election results in real time at the polling units as promised to the voters. And most audaciously announced not only election results even for areas where election did not take place, but also announced Tinubu as the winner and president-elect.

While the shocked and disenfranchised Nigerian voters bemoaned the charade dubbed presidential election of February 25, 2023, the worst gubernatorial and state assembly election heist took place on March 18, 2023. We experienced an exponential increase in criminal activities. People flogged, beaten, macheted, shot, prevented from casting their votes and others’ votes trashed, torn and burnt by the APC terrorist thugs.

Every international election monitoring organization including the AU, EU & the IRI/NDI rejected the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling APC during these elections.

Letter to Joe Biden and others Page 2

In light of the foregoing, we urge you to use your good offices in any diplomatic or legal way necessary to help us prevent those enemies of our democracy from tearing it down. We hereby demand as follows;

  • Let the Peoples’ Votes Count: INEC must revert to counting all votes cast, tabulated and announced at the polling booths on February 25, 2023 presidential elections and strictly follow their guidelines and the 2022 Electoral Law as amended.
  • The INEC Chairman must step aside.
  • Return of the Peoples’ Mandate: It is obvious that the INEC declared winner of the February 25, 2023 presidential elections, Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not win the elections. Mr. Tinubu did not meet the 25% of votes cast in Abuja, and therefore could not have been declared winner in the first place.
  • No Presidential Inauguration on May 29, 2023. Mr. Tinubu has an outrageous political baggage and his inauguration while these issues persist in court would be a major affront to Nigerians and the Nigerian Constitution.
  • Visa Ban: All Nigerian individuals and their immediate family who participated in the rape of democracy during these elections must be placed on an indefinite US Visa ban. A list of these individuals is attached.
  • The Joint NDI/IRI International Observer Mission to Nigeria Presidential and Legislative Elections Recommendation must be adopted by INEC implemented in full.
  • The Global Magnitsky Act and the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act: These two United States Acts must be preferred of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC), The Presidency, Governors, other Nigerians and INEC Officials who participated in the sham election with attendant Human Rights violations, killings, violence and ethnic profiling.
  • The Nigerian Judiciary: Judges who participate in the various Election Tribunals and corruptly issue questionable judgments must be so treated like the corrupt politicians.
  • That the United States Government must withhold any form of official recognition to Bola Ahmed Tinubu because he did not win the election.
  • That the United States of America should stand with the people of Nigeria and millions of Nigerian-Americans in the quest for a Democracy and Rule of Law.
  • We ask the international community not to watch Nigeria become a failed or criminal state, because the world will feel it!

The NACJD is a non-partisan US-based. Research and Good Governance advocacy non-profit organization, that educates the US Government, the Congress, and the policy-making community to influence US policies on Nigeria.
