Former House of Representatives member Ifeanyichukwu Ibezi, an Anambra chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and declared support for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, according to a statement on the defection. 247ureports.com could not find mainstream coverage of the move, so the details below are reported as stated by the party.
Ibezi spoke while receiving a delegation of the NDC’s national and state working committees, which included Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central and Senator Tony Nwoye of Anambra North. “Anambra is a democratic state, and Democrats are working together. We reject ‘progressives working together,'” he said, in what reads as a jab at the alliance of APGA and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) around President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. The Anambra State Government has described APGA as backing Tinubu for 2027.
Ibezi, who is also convener of the Reality Movement, pledged to deploy his structure to deliver Obi and all NDC candidates in the Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, in the Anambra Central Senatorial District and across the state.
Ibezi won the Idemili North and South seat on the APGA platform in 2019 but was removed by the Court of Appeal after about five months, with Obinna Chidoka returning to the seat. He has since remained active in local politics, and an online profile also lists him on the 2025 campaign council of the APC’s governorship candidate, Paul Chukwuma, which 247ureports.com could not independently confirm.
The delegation that received him carries its own weight. Umeh is a former APGA national chairman who led the party to its 2013 governorship victory before moving to the NDC this year, and Nwoye left the ADC for the NDC in May. Their presence shows the NDC is drawing on former APGA figures as it tries to build a base in Obi’s home state, where the party faces both APGA, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and the APC.
APGA had not responded to Ibezi’s exit at the time of this report.
