Several supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Benue State were injured on Saturday, October 10, when two buses conveying them to the party’s North-Central mega rally in Lafia, Nasarawa State, collided head-on a few kilometres from the venue. No deaths were reported.
The crash happened within Lafia town, along the Government House route, according to accounts of the incident. Dan-Morgan Ihomun, a spokesman for one faction of the Benue APC, confirmed it. “They are APC supporters in Benue. They were in two buses. They had a head-on collision, but there was no loss of life. The people have been taken to the hospital,” he said. One report says the victims were loyalists of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, though not all outlets name the faction, and the number of injured has not been confirmed. The injured were taken to hospitals in Lafia for treatment. The rally was organised in support of President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, and participants from across the North-Central zone had started arriving in Lafia on Friday.
Some online headlines describe the victims as paid and mobilised supporters who struggled to get emergency medical help. 247ureports.com found no evidence in published reports that they were paid, and accounts of the emergency response differ. One report quotes Ihomun thanking emergency services for a quick response and calling for more attention to the safety of party members travelling to political events, while another notes that the circumstances of the crash and the arrangements for the injured were not yet established. Details of how the collision happened, and the condition of the injured, remain unclear.
The incident comes months after a deadlier crash involving Benue APC delegates. On March 25, 2026, three delegates from Ogbadibo Local Government Area died and about ten others were injured when a bus carrying them from Makurdi to Lafia for the party’s North-Central Zonal Congress crashed. Governor Hyacinth Alia visited the injured at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, and the state’s deputy governor expressed sorrow at the time. The repeat of such crashes on the Makurdi-Lafia route has prompted calls for better safety arrangements for rally travel.
As of this report, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nasarawa State Police Command had not issued statements on the latest crash.
