EDE, OSUN STATE — Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force’s Cybercrime Unit have triggered widespread panic and severe condemnation following a heavy-handed, daylight raid on a student residential hostel in Ede, Osun State.
The aggressive operation, which went viral on Wednesday across WhatsApp and other social media platforms, has reignited intense public anger over the persistent profiling, harassment, and violation of the fundamental human rights of Nigerian youths by security forces.
Heavy-Handed Tactics and Student Intimidation
Viral video footage capturing the incident showed armed tactical operatives conducting a chaotic, high-handed raid on the off-campus student facility.
According to eyewitnesses and victims, the officers stormed the premises in broad daylight, roughhandling occupants and forcing students to surrender their personal laptops and smartphones under duress.
The hostile nature of the operation has drawn sharp rebukes from student union leaders and civil rights activists, who accused the unit of using the guise of fighting cybercrime to inflict emotional trauma and institutional terror on innocent academic communities.
Violation of Due Process and Rule of Law
The Ede raid leaves a trail of critical legal violations and procedural questions that the police command has failed to address:
- The Warrant Question: There was no evidence that the operatives obtained or presented valid search warrants before invading the private residential spaces of the students.
- Contempt for Constitutional Rights: Legal experts have strongly condemned the raid, pointing out that Section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the privacy of citizens, their homes, and their correspondence. Security forces routinely treat these protections with utter contempt during youth-targeted sweeps.
- Guilty Until Proven Innocent: Despite statutory provisions granting even suspects the right to due process, activists argue that the Cybercrime Unit operated on a lawless doctrine of collective guilt and immediate criminal profiling based solely on youth and the possession of digital devices.
A Pattern of Extortion and Abuse
The Osun State Police Command and the national police headquarters have maintained an eerie silence since the footage went viral, failing to provide a legal justification for the raid or announce an internal investigation into the misconduct of the officers involved.
Public analysts warn that the fight against cybercrime is increasingly being weaponized by rogue tactical units as a lucrative franchise for extortion and citizen intimidation.
Advocacy groups are already calling on the Inspector General of Police to rein in the unit, declaring that the legitimate pursuit of internet fraudsters must never be used as a license by security forces to subvert the rule of law or trample on the dignity of Nigerian citizens.
