SANGOTEDO, LAGOS — The upscale and rapidly growing Ajah-Sangotedo corridor in Eti-Osa Local Government Area has been plunged into panic following the horrific discovery of a young woman’s body dumped in a nearby swampy body of water, just a short distance from the popular Sangotedo ShopRite (Novare Lekki Mall).
Preliminary reports indicate the victim was a female Point of Sale (POS) operator running a local financial services kiosk in the area. She was allegedly subjected to a brutal gang rape before her killers dumped her remains in the water to conceal the crime.
A Chilling Discovery Close to Public View
The gruesome find was made early in the day by local commuters and traders heading toward the commercial hub. The body of the young woman was found floating facedown in the marshy waters and drainage channels that skirt the perimeter of the major shopping plaza.
According to witnesses on the scene, the body bore clear signs of physical violence and struggle. The perpetrators reportedly targeted the operator under the cover of night, taking advantage of the poorly lit access roads and secluded construction sites that border the main expressways in the area.

POS Operators: The Highly Vulnerable Target
This horrific attack highlights the escalating dangers faced by POS operators across Lagos State. As the country relies heavily on digital agent banking, small POS kiosks have mushroomed on virtually every street corner. However, these small business owners have essentially become prime targets for violent criminals due to specific vulnerabilities:
- Cash-Heavy Exposure: POS operators routinely carry substantial amounts of physical cash to handle customer withdrawals, making them constant targets for armed robberies.
- Lack of Structural Security: Unlike formal bank branches, most operators conduct business from open wooden kiosks, umbrellas, or uncompleted buildings with zero security infrastructure, CCTV, or protective barriers.
- Dangerous Operating Hours: In a bid to maximize profits, many operators remain open late into the night or set up shop very early in the morning, making them soft targets for sexual predators and violent gangs during low-traffic hours.
Community Demands Justice and Security
The news has sparked intense anger among residents and the local POS operators’ union in the Eti-Osa axis. Many are calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the security architecture surrounding the Sangotedo commercial hub.
Despite the presence of large retail facilities like ShopRite, community members complain that the immediate surroundings lack functional streetlights and adequate police foot patrols at night.
The Lagos State Police Command has been contacted regarding the discovery, and local divisions are expected to deploy emergency response teams to recover the body for an autopsy and officially launch a homicide and sexual assault investigation.
Residents are strongly urged to exercise caution, while local POS operators are being advised by their peers to strictly limit their operating hours and avoid handling large cash volumes in isolated spaces as the community awaits an official statement from law enforcement.
