ABUJA, NIGERIA — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that entering the Nigerian political arena has drastically diminished his personal wealth rather than expanding it.
To reinforce his long-standing claim of being an extraordinarily wealthy private citizen before entering governance, the former Anambra State governor publicly brandished his highly exclusive, invitation-only international credit cards, revealing that he was among a tiny group of global elites selected for the financial milestones decades ago.
The Prestige Cards and Wealth Claims
Speaking during a political engagement following his recent confirmation as the NDC’s presidential flagbearer, Obi hit back at critics who claim Nigerian politicians only find wealth through the public treasury. He detailed his early corporate successes in the United Kingdom and Nigeria, revealing his ownership of legendary luxury charge cards.
“In 1987, American Express introduced the Platinum card for 5,000 people, here is mine,” Obi stated, displaying the card to the audience. “They later introduced the Black card (Centurion card) in 1999 for 1,000 people on the planet, here is mine. I had a viable business, and while I don’t regret going into politics, it made me poorer.”
The American Express Centurion Card—colloquially known as the “Black Amex”—is widely regarded as the world’s most exclusive payment card, extended strictly by invitation to ultra-high-net-worth individuals based on multi-million dollar annual spending metrics. Obi’s public display was designed to draw a sharp contrast between himself and career politicians whose fortunes were built entirely out of public offices.
A Stark Contrast in Governance
Obi, who famously portrays a spartan lifestyle despite his massive banking and corporate equity holdings, used the financial revelation to illustrate his philosophy of public service. He maintained that governance should be treated as a sacrifice and a call to service rather than an investment opportunity for personal enrichment.
The disclosure aligns with his ongoing campaign strategy for the general elections under the banner of the newly formed NDC, where he has teamed up with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
The opposition leader’s camp insists that a leader who entered politics already possessing international financial prestige is less likely to view the national treasury as a personal piggy bank.
