PORT HARCOURT — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has elevated the stakes of the 2027 presidential election to an existential high, declaring that securing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election is a personal survival battle because the opposition will target him if Tinubu loses.
Speaking during a high-stakes media chat in Port Harcourt, the former Rivers State governor left no room for political ambiguity regarding his loyalties. Addressing the intense backlash he has faced for backing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration while maintaining nominal membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike insisted that backing President Tinubu is a non-negotiable imperative.
“If you watch what is happening today and look at it, peradventure anything happens and Mr. President fails today, I will be the first politician that Atiku and Obi will hunt for his head,” Wike declared. “They will come for my head. That is why each day I sleep, I am thinking about the President’s re-election. When I am eating, I am thinking about it. Everything I am doing now is about 2027.”
Pushing for Strategy, Not Just Mobilization
Beyond public declarations, political insiders report that Wike has actively been lobbying President Tinubu to allow him a direct hand in designing and implementing the 2027 presidential campaign strategy, rather than restricting his role to mere grassroots mobilization.
While President Tinubu traditionally relies on his long-standing political inner circle—his trusted “man Fridays” and Southwestern ideological allies—Wike is making an aggressive pitch that the changing political landscape requires a different playbook. The FCT Minister maintains that because his political future and safety are directly tied to Tinubu’s success, no strategist will fight harder or execute with more urgency than he will.
Known for his ruthless political machinery in the South-South, Wike is pushing for a campaign apparatus that moves away from conventional, passive messaging and instead uses aggressive, multi-regional offensive strategies. He has pledged to deliver both the FCT and Rivers State, arguing that his direct tactical command over the campaign strategy is required to break opposition strongholds in those critical battlegrounds.
While the APC leadership has publicly welcomed Wike’s commitment, the debate within the President’s inner camp continues over how deeply to integrate the uncompromising PDP powerhouse into the core strategic brain trust. For Wike, however, the target remains singular: ensuring the Renewed Hope agenda secures a second term, because for him, 2027 is nothing short of a political do-or-die affair.
