KADUNA, NIGERIA — A horrific act of jungle justice has thrown the Maraban Jos community on the outskirts of Kaduna into total chaos after an enraged crowd overpowered police officers, stormed a divisional station, and brutally lynched an Islamic teacher, Malama Ummulkhairi, before setting her body on fire over entirely false child theft allegations.
The tragedy has sparked nationwide outrage and raised deep concerns over the breakdown of law and order, systemic lawlessness, and the fatal consequences of mob violence fueled by rumors.
From Asking Directions to a Death Sentence
The nightmare began when Malama Ummulkhairi, a respected Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children, traveled from the New Maraban Jos area to attend a local Islamic lecture.
According to family members and witnesses, she accidentally became separated from her companions and lost her way. In a bid to find her destination, she approached some local children in the neighborhood to ask for directions.

Unfounded panic quickly spread through the area as a few alarmist residents spotted her speaking to the minors and immediately raised a false alarm, loudly accusing her of being a child kidnapper. A hostile crowd rapidly assembled, prompting the Maraban Jos Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to rush a team to the scene to rescue her from imminent lynching and bring her into the station for protective custody.
The Station Besieged
While she was inside the facility, her panicked family members rushed to the police station to clarify her identity, calm the situation, and explain to the crowd that she was a peaceful religious teacher.
However, their appeals fell on deaf ears. Within an hour, a mob numbering in the hundreds completely besieged and stormed the police station. The rioters aggressively overpowered the few officers on duty, smashed through security barriers, and forcefully dragged Malama Ummulkhairi out into the open street.

Despite her desperate pleas of innocence, the mob severely beat her, placed a used tire around her neck, and set her body ablaze, killing her in the inferno before any security reinforcements could arrive.
Police Vow Severe Retribution
The Kaduna State Police Command has strongly condemned the killing, describing it as an act of absolute savagery, criminality, and a direct assault on the rule of law.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed that several principal suspects behind the mob action have already been arrested during an ongoing tactical sweep of the community.
“No person or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands,” Hassan stated, noting that a comprehensive investigation has commenced. “The Commissioner of Police warns that the Command will not tolerate jungle justice, mob action, or attacks on police formations and personnel. All culprits will face the full weight of the law.”
Civil society groups and residents have expressed deep sadness over the incident, warning that the unchecked spread of paranoia and the failure of the public to trust formal judicial procedures is turning peaceful communities into lawless execution grounds.
