LAGOS — Controversial Nollywood actor and political commentator Yul Edochie has sparked a fresh wave of political debate after declaring that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi will not become the President of Nigeria in the 2027 election cycle.

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Edochie dismissed Obi’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his efforts to build a grand opposition coalition as a “total waste of time.”

“Dead on Arrival”

Edochie, who has become a vocal supporter of the current administration, claimed that the momentum surrounding Obi’s new political platform is illusory. He asserted that any party Obi joins is destined to face internal friction and eventual fragmentation.

“Any political party Peter Obi joins will scatter,” Edochie stated on his official social media handle. “This recent move to the ADC and the talk of coalitions is dead on arrival. It is surprising that he continues to ignore the deeper truths about why his ambition is not feasible at this time.”

The actor’s comments come as Peter Obi recently concluded a high-profile re-registration exercise in his ward in Agulu, Anambra State, signaling his commitment to the ADC following his departure from the Labour Party.

Support for the Incumbent

Reaffirming his loyalty to the Presidency, Edochie maintained that the incumbent, President Bola Tinubu, remains the most viable leader for the country. He challenged the track records of the prominent figures now aligning with the ADC, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark.

“I stand firmly with President Tinubu,” Edochie declared. “I look at the people leading this new coalition—men who were in power for years and achieved absolutely nothing—and I wonder what they are coming back to do. Their protests and alliances will change nothing.”

Mixed Reactions

The actor’s outburst has drawn immediate and varied responses across the political spectrum. While supporters of the Tinubu administration praised Edochie’s “boldness” in calling out the opposition, loyalists of the “OK Movement”—the joint political vehicle for Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso—dismissed the actor as a “political jobber” seeking relevance.

The ADC leadership has yet to issue an official response to the actor’s critique. However, party insiders maintain that the growing coalition is a direct response to the socio-economic challenges facing the nation and remains focused on presenting a unified alternative in 2027.

As the political temperature rises, Edochie’s comments highlight the deepening divide between the supporters of the “Renewed Hope” agenda and an opposition struggling to find a stable footing.
