Council workers from the 17 local government areas of Abia state have cursed Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu over the stoppage of payment of annual leave allowances to them, describing the action as wicked and callous.
Some of the council workers who spoke to 247ureports.com said they were shocked by the decision of the state government to stop the payments when it had already paid the allowances to some category of workers. Others said workers no longer get paid sundry allowances or claims, except salary which is always paid in arrears.
“What is the reason for paying leave allowance to senior staff from Grade level 16 to 8 and when it comes to the junior staff from Grade level 7 to others, you suddenly stop the payments. How much is the leave allowances of the junior staff he stopped from being paid? If you add up all the leave allowances of junior local government workers, it is not up to a quarter of his security vote. This is a wicked government. We are shocked that Okezie Ikpeazu has brought untold suffering to local government workers in the state. Even with the bailout the federal government released from the payment of arrears, workers are still being owed in Abia state. This is only Ikpeazu’s 7 months in office, not even Orji Uzor Kalu or TA Orji showed this wickedness to workers. We leave Ikpeazu at the hands of God.”
The workers insisted that the administration of Ikpeazu has brought them ill luck ranging from nonpayment of salaries to bad policies which had adversely affected them.
Sources told 247ureports.com that the governor has failed to fulfill his promise of paying salaries by the 24th of each month, leaving workers to wonder why Ikpeazu is fast gaining a reputation for promising one thing and doing another.
