…police lunch manhunt for fleeing suspects

By Chuks Eke

The police in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, have allegedly staged a man hunt for three suspects who allegedly stabbed one Chikodili, to death, with a broken bottle, over sharing formula for N1600, given to them.

It was gathered that the deceased, a scrap dealer at Tarzan junction axis, along Onitsha/Enugu expressway, Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area, hailed from Ebonyi State, while his assailants, who also deal in scraps, hail from Enugu State.

According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the deceased and his assailants, earlier had a prolonged heated argument in their place of work over the sharing formula of the said money which prompted the intervention of a master trader that resolved the crisis.

However, as the resolution did not go down well with the assailants, some hours later they reportedly invited the deceased to a drinking spree, aimed at luring him to deal decisively with him.

The deceased was said to have ignored the invitation knowing fully well that they still want to harm him because the resolution was not in their favour.

It was learnt that the bubble burst occurred when they eventually caught him on his bike, same day, held him tight while on his bike, as one stabbed him on his neck and head with a broken bottle, he immediately slumped and the assailants fled.

The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at Iyi-Enu hospital morgue, Ogidi, by the police who reportedly have concluded arrangements for autopsy.

Wailing and crying when met in her residence at Nkpor, mother to the deceased demanded for justice adding that the assailants just wasted her son for nothing.

Confirming the incident, the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, DPO, at Ogidi, Mr Sani Ahmed, (CSP), who simply confirmed the incident, said they have embarked on man hunt for the assailants.

“None of the suspects has been arrested, we have commenced man hunt for the fleeing assailants. We will get them, the corpse of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue,” he affirmed.

Kelvin Chukwu Emerges Labour Party Candidate in Enugu East Election, Succceeds Assassinated Elder Brother

0

Kelvin Chukwu, the youngest brother of the assassinated Labour Party candidate in the Enugu East senatorial election, has been nominated as the successor to his brother.

The Enugu East senatorial election will now hold on Saturday, March 11 alongside the gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections, as a result of the murder of Oyibo Chukwu, a former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) chairman in Enugu State, on Wednesday, February 22, three days to the presidential and National Assembly election.

The younger Chukwu was elected the Labour Party standard bearer a few minutes ago by winning a whole 223 out of the 231 votes cast at Top 10 Hotel in Golf Estate, Enugu.

His opponents, Dr Chinyeaka Ohaa, a retired permanent secretary; Chief Stanislaus Chinedu Nneji, commandant of the National Peace Corps; and Emmanuel Uchenna Ogbodo, a Special Adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, scored no votes in the election conducted by the Labour Party National Vice Chairman for the Southeast, Chief Agumba Okeke, and the LP Enugu State chairman, Barrister Casmir Uchenna Agbo and other LP executives in the state.

Delegates came from all six local government areas that make up the Enugu East senatorial district.

Kelvin Chukwu, a 50-year-old lawyer, mass communication graduate and businessman, pledged, in his acceptance speech, to represent the senatorial area effectively and fulfil all promises by his elder brother during the electioneering campaign.

“I recognise your mandate as a sacred trust”, he told the large cheering crowd in a very short speech.

Professor Silk Ugwu-Ogbu of the Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos who hails from Enugu East quickly congratulated the winner, noting that the party could not have chosen a better candidate.

“Public sympathy is very strong with the Chukwu family because of the manner in which his elder brother was killed and then his body and vehicle burnt”, he said in the message.

“His personal assistant, Sunday Igwesi, who was with him, was also killed in the same manner”.

The professor believes that the new Labour Party candidate is “going to win the election with a tremendous margin and almost effortlessly, as already indicated in the huge number of votes he won in the primary election”.

Kelvin Chukwu’s two elder brothers, Chief Lucky Chukwu, a former commissioner in Enugu State, and Professor Arthur Chukwu of the Nigerian Law School, both lawyers, unanimously chose their younger brother to run in consideration of “his extraordinary humility, kindness, devotion to the Catholic Church and an uncanny ability to get along with people, including complete strangers”, according to Professor Ugwu-Ogbu.

Man Strangles New Wife to Death in Anambra, Abandons Corpse for Mother

By Izunna Okafor, Nnewi

It was a heart-rending scene at the Nnewi Diocesan Hospital (Akwudo) in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, as the members of Mr. Nathaniel Uzuegbunam’s family of Obiuno Community in Otolo Nnewi gathered to behold the corpse of their beloved daughter who was reportedly strangled to death.

The deceased, Mrs Ebere Obiora (Nee Uzuegbunam), was said to have been strangled to death by her husband, Mr. Ikechukwu Obiora of Ezi-Ogwugwu Community in Otolo Nnewi, barely six months after they got married.

According to source close to the family, the couple got married in August 2022, and were expecting their first child before the incident happened. The source further opined that the couple had been having periodic domestic violence and family problems, unknown to the family of the wife.

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that the family members of the deceased, on Thursday, March 2, 2023, received a call from their in-law (the mother of her daughter’s husband) at about 7.pm, informing them that their daughter had just slumped and appeared to be dead. The shocking news made them rush to their in-law’s residence at Ezi-Ogwugwu, Otolo Nnewi.

Upon reaching there, they were informed that their daughter had been rushed to the Nnewi Diocesan Hospital at Akwudo, where they also drove to immediately. The family members received the most shocking news when they got to the hospital, as the doctor on duty, declared their daughter dead after examining her body.

The doctor’s report, however, seemed unbelievable to them, which made them rush her to another hospital, St. Felix Okolo Hospital, Nnewi, where it was also confirmed to them by the doctor on duty, that their daughter had passed on. And they returned to the Diocesan Hospital, Akwudo, to deposit her corpse.

Be it as it, the bereaved family found it difficult to believe that their daughter just slumped and died instantly for no just reason. Their doubt was further strengthen by the by texture of their daughter’s corpse and the appearance of her tongue which was half-out of her mouth. They therefore demanded further explanation as to what actually happened to her. They also wondered why her husband was not seen anywhere around the hospital throughout the entire incident, and further wondered why it was his mother that called them to inform them of what was happening, instead of he as the husband.

Consequent upon these, the husband of the deceased, Mr. Obiora, was immediately summoned to give detailed explanation.

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, further gathered that, upon interrogation, the suspect initially insisted on the claim that his wife just slumped and died, but could not give any reasonable and convincing explanation to substantiate his claims.

When asked why he did not call his in-laws to inform them when the incident happened, and why he did not show up throughout the entire rush and efforts to save her life after the said slump, the suspect could not give any cogent excuse, which prompted his immediate arrest by the operatives of the Otolo Nnewi Divisional Headquarters.

However, when further interrogated by the police and the bereaved family who threatened to carry out an autopsy on their daughter’s corpse to unravel the circumstances surrounding her obviously suspicious death; Mr. Obiora finally confessed to the crime and revealed that it was he who actually strangled the wife to death.

Asked why, the suspect, who narrated how he committed the homicide, said it was as a result of domestic violence between him and the wife.

He narrated that he came back in the morning of March 2, 2023, and was knocking at the gate, but his wife (who was actually bathing at the time) did not open the gate immediately, which made him to start scolding at her out of anger. He said it was scolding at her that he also started slapping and hitting her, right from the gate into the house, till he angrily grabbed her on the neck and strangled her to death.

Mr. Obiora said he was so shocked when he saw what happened, as he never expected the wife to die. He said he confided in few persons and sought advice on what to do, after which he eventually abandoned the corpse and left out of fear and confusion, as he did not know what next to do, until evening when his mother reached out to his wife’s family members.

As at the time of filing this report, the suspect is still retained in the police custody, while the police authority had assured that he would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigation into the matter.

Presidential Polls: Don’t Sell Justice To Highest Bidder, Timi Frank Warns Judiciary

…says INEC raped, murdered democracy on Feb 25

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, on Sunday, described the outcome of the presidential election held on February 25 as rape and murder of democracy by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

While commended the Supreme Court for overriding President Muhammadu Buhari on the legality and validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes, he warned Judiciary to, never again, “sell justice to the highest bidder”, as litigants square up to challenge the outcome of the general election.

“They (Judiciary) must redeem their image by ensuring that justice is done and seen to be done to the election petition cases now being brought before it”, the activist said.

Frank in a statement in Abuja, also called on the judiciary to leverage the same patriotic courage it demonstrated in reversing the ban on old Naira notes in dispensing substantial Justice in the several election petition cases to be brought before them soon.

“Nigerians are heartbroken, agitated, angry and frustrated because INEC raped and murdered democracy in the country on February 25, 2023”, the activist said.

He lamented that some of the rulings emanating from the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court in recent times brought shame to the entire country.

“Some of the decisions of the Supreme Court in recent times have made Nigerians to lose hope in the judiciary especially the one that awarded Senatorial tickets to Godswill Akpabio and Ahmad Lawan who never participated in senatorial primary in their respective constituencies.

“How can Senator Godswill Akpabio and Senate President Ahmad Lawan be made candidates overnight by the apex court and today they claim to have been elected as Senators?”, the activist queried.

Frank who is the Ambassador to United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) in East Africa and Middle East, reminded the Judiciary that Nigerians have since lost hope on them as they believe they already know how the courts will rule on the various post election cases to be filed before them.

He called on the judiciary especially the Supreme Court to rise up from its ashes of partisanship and servile disposition to the APC and seize the opportunity by the present political conundrum to reset its image and do the needful courageously.

The irredentist urged the Judiciary to note that even the National chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, admitted that issues of logistics, election technology (BVAS), the behaviour of some election personnel at different levels, marred the presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to him, this was a clear indication that INEC failed woefully in its duty to deliver credible elections nor use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to conduct the elections in line with its guidelines.

He said, “This is the justice that Nigerians are asking for. INEC has failed and we urge the judiciary to so hold that INEC violated its own guidelines and did not comply with the Electoral Act and its guidelines.”

Frank insisted that the present case was unique in the sense that Nigerians have continued to cry out that their votes have been stolen and their mandate denied.

He said, “Both international and local observers have agreed with them that the election was marred by massive irregularities and rigging. They equally berated and scored INEC low for not adhering to the law and its own guidelines.

“It is equally obvious that INEC failed to follow its guidelines and promise to transmit election results from the polling units to its server in real time.

“All over Nigeria, evidence abound in video, audio and hard copy formats showing how the results of the elections were falsified to favour the ruling APC.

“We believe that Nigerian Judges and Justices of the Appeal and Supreme Courts were in this country when the Presidential and National Assembly Election was conducted.

“Besides, we believe that Nigerian Judges and Justices read newspapers and listen to news on radio and television, therefore, they cannot claim to be unaware of Electoral heist that was perpetrated during the last election.

“It now behooves on the judiciary to review the facts that would be presented before them by aggrieved political parties, sift them to determine the truth and rule to uphold Justice, stability, peace and democracy in the country.

“Now that the cases will be coming before them, Nigerians are hopeful that they will use the same patriotic courage to rule in favour of the over 30 million Nigerians who voted during the last election in order to make their votes count.

“We saw how the Judiciary in Kenya rose up and sided with the yearnings and aspirations of the people when it annulled a rigged presidential election and ordered for a fresh one.

“We are calling on the Nigerian Judiciary to equally be courageous enough to declare the actual winners of the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections as duly elected.”

Don’t Set Enugu Ablaze – Ohanaeze Youths Warn Okey Ezea

0

From Abdulateef Bamgbose, Abuja

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has come hard on the Senator-elect for Enugu North Senatorial zone, Barr. Okey Ezea over his ‘do or die comment’.

Ezea was said to have told his constituents that the forthcoming governorship election would be a do or die affair.

However, in a statement by the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, he said Ezea’s alleged utterances should be condemned by all lovers of democracy.

Okwu said it was shocking that Ezea who benefited from the goodwill and political tsunami led by Mr. Peter Obi could turn around to instigate violence.

He said, “We the Ohanaeze youths reject in its entirety the inciting statement credited to the Enugu North Senator-elect, Barr. Okey Ezea wherein he was describing the March 11 governorship election as a do or die affair.

“We find it so awkward that Ezea’s first public utterance as a Senator-elect is to call on the youths to go and engage in violence. This is totally unacceptable and should be resisted by every Enugu youth.

“The youths must say no to politicians who would want to use them to cause mayhem in Enugu State. We should not forget that it is very dangerous to throw stones into a marketplace, you never can tell who will be the victim.

“We warn Okey Ezea to stop instigating violence in Enugu State that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has made peaceful since the inception of his administration.

“We call on him to immediately withdraw that divisive and inciting statement without further delay.

“This should also serve as a serious warning to other politicians who may want to toe this path. The youths will not take it lightly with such a person. We shall employ all legal means to bring such a person to justice,” Okwu warned.

Naira Redesign: ‘Disclose how you’re obeying Supreme Court orders’, SERAP tells Buhari

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “disclose details of the measures your government is taking to immediately and effectively obey the Supreme Court decision extending the validity of the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, and directing the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to continue to receive the notes from Nigerians.”

SERAP urged him “to publicly instruct the CBN to immediately and effectively implement the Supreme Court decision ordering an end to the cash withdrawal limits imposed by banks because such restrictions violate citizens’ right to freely use their property.”

SERAP also urged him “to disclose the measures that your government is taking to direct the CBN to immediately re-circulate the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, as ordered by the Supreme Court.”

In the letter dated 4 March, 2023 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said, “There is an overriding public interest in disclosing the details of the measures your government and the CBN are taking to effectively and satisfactorily obey the Supreme Court decision.”

According to SERAP, “Disclosing the measures that your government and the CBN are taking to implement the Supreme Court decision would also enable Nigerians to monitor and scrutinize the level of compliance with the decision.”

SERAP said, “The public should not be kept in the dark on what your government and the CBN are doing to implement the decision. Widely publishing the implementation measures would also improve accountability of state officials and public confidence in the rule of law and Nigeria’s democracy.”

The Supreme Court last week extended the validity of the old N200, N500, and N1,000 Naira notes till 31 December, stating that the CBN must continue to receive the notes from Nigerians. The Court held that the president’s directive on the redesign of the new notes without due consultation is invalid.

The letter, read in part: “We would be grateful if the requested information and recommended measures are implemented within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel your government to comply with our requests.”

“The implementation by your government of the CBN policy on the redesign of the country’s currency has contributed to violations of citizens’ rights.”

“SERAP is concerned about the persistent disobedience of court orders by your government, and the apparent lack of respect for constitutional and international rule of law obligations.”

“Nigerians are entitled to the details of the level of compliance by your government and the CBN with the Supreme Court decision as a matter of transparency, justice and the rule of law.”

“The Nigerian Constitution, Freedom of Information Act, and human rights treaties to which the country is a state party rest on the principle that citizens should have access to information regarding their government’s activities.”

“Your government has the legal duties to act as ordered by the Supreme Court, and consistent with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, the CBN Act, and the country’s international obligations.”

“Our requests are brought in the public interest, and in keeping with the requirements of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended]; the Freedom of Information Act; the CBN Act, and the country’s international obligations including under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.”

“According to our information, the Supreme Court has extended the validity of the N200, N500, and N1,000 Naira notes till 31 December, and directed that the CBN must continue to receive the old notes from Nigerians.”

“The Court held that your directive for the redesign of the new notes and withdrawal of the old notes without due consultation is invalid.”

“The Court also stated that the disobedience of its interim order of 8 February that the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes should continue to circulate alongside the new ones makes Nigeria’s democracy look like a mere pretension while democracy is replaced with autocracy or dictatorship.”

“The Supreme Court also ruled that the cash withdrawal limits imposed by banks as a result of scarcity of currency notes in circulation is illegal, as it amounts to impermissible restriction on citizens’ right to freely use their property.”
