Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing worsening insecurity in the state, alleged injustice within the party, and more than two and a half years without receiving salaries and allowances.
The Resignations
The lawmakers, who include an ally of former Governor Abdul’aziz Yari, submitted separate resignation letters dated October 4, 2026. Those named across multiple reports include Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara (Talata Mafara South), Hon. Ibrahim Tukur Bakura (Bakura), Hon. Faruk Musa Dosara (Maradun I), Hon. Muktaru Nasiru Kaura, also known as Jikan Shehu (Kaura Namoda North), and Hon. Barrister Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North), among others. Note: reported figures for the total number of resigning lawmakers have varied slightly across outlets — from six to nine — likely reflecting differences in which letters had surfaced publicly at the time each report was filed; 247ureports.com is reporting the figure of eight, which appears most consistently across sources.
Their Reasons
Speaking on behalf of the group, Kagara said the lawmakers’ grievances centered on the state’s deteriorating security situation and the APC’s failure to adequately address it. “Because of the lack of security and lack of concern for the people of Zamfara, we raised the issue in the House, which did not go down well with the governor. That was why we had issues with him, which led to our suspension and later defection to the APC,” Kagara said, referencing an earlier dispute with Governor Dauda Lawal over their handling of security concerns on the Assembly floor. He added that the security situation they had raised concerns about has “even gotten worse now compared to previous times.”
Kagara also alleged that the lawmakers had gone 32 months without receiving salaries, allowances and other entitlements due to them as elected members of the state legislature. “This is our 32 months without salary, allowances and other entitlements as honourable members, and the people of Zamfara; the ball is in their court,” he said. He further alleged that joining the APC had not resolved their earlier grievances, claiming some party leaders conspired against them and denied them a fair hearing.
Party Response
The state APC Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Danmadamin Birnin Magaji, said the party had not officially received the lawmakers’ resignation letters, noting they had only seen the letters circulating on social media like members of the public. He said the party was unaware of any specific grievances prior to that. One unnamed party official, speaking to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity, said he did not blame the lawmakers for leaving, alleging that Governor Lawal had chosen to work with other allies rather than reconcile with the aggrieved members.
Background
Zamfara’s Assembly has seen significant political turbulence throughout 2026. The APC had earlier taken full control of the 24-member Assembly after the Speaker and 12 PDP lawmakers defected to the ruling party in a mass crossover. The lawmakers resigning today were reportedly already under suspension within the APC prior to their formal resignation, and their departure adds to a broader pattern of realignment within Zamfara’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
