ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has promised to bring back fuel subsidies if elected president in 2027.
Speaking as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku said restoring the subsidy is necessary to ease the rising cost of living for Nigerians and small businesses. He faulted the current administration’s fuel policy, arguing that removing the subsidy without proper support measures triggered severe economic hardship.
Atiku maintained that a reformed subsidy model would help lower food prices, reduce transport costs, and stabilize the national economy.
The pledge directly challenges President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies. While the government insists that subsidy removal saves money for critical infrastructure, opposition leaders argue it has drastically reduced the purchasing power of ordinary citizens.
