AWKA — Police operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka, Anambra State, have arrested one Iloh Maduakonam Madukanaya, an indigene of Obunagwu, Achalla Village, Enugwu-Agidi in Njikoka Local Government Area, over the alleged statutory rape and abduction of a 14-year-old girl.
The suspect, who resides with his parents, is widely described by local residents as a violent local tout who exercises overbearing control over his own family. According to community members, his parents live in constant fear of him and were unable to intervene even as he routinely brought the minor into their home to defile her.
The suspect, who was apprehended on August 6, 2026, had earlier been reported to the Abagana Police Division in March 2026 for allegedly harassing two underage sisters. Reports indicate that the suspect subsequently abducted the younger girl from her parents’ custody, held her for days, and repeatedly subjected her to sexual abuse inside his family residence.
Efforts by the victim’s parents to intervene were met with violence and threats, as the suspect reportedly stormed their residence, assaulted the parents, and issued death threats that left the family living in fear.
Desperate for assistance, the victim’s parents sought the intervention of Oshi Yohanna Rachel (also known as Ambassador Ray), Executive Director of Davina Care Foundation—a non-governmental organization advocating against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). The foundation subsequently petitioned the SCID Awka, leading to the suspect’s arrest and the initiation of formal investigations aimed at court prosecution.
However, tensions have escalated as of August 7, 2026, following reports that certain high-profile community members are actively trying to bury the case away from police and court interference, resorting to severe threats against the victim’s parents to force a withdrawal. In response to the intimidation, the local community vigilante group arrested one suspect, identified as Mr. Chinedu, who was allegedly among those coercing the family.
Stakeholders and child rights advocates have urged the Anambra State Commissioner of Police to guarantee the maximum security of the victim and her family while ensuring that all individuals attempting to pervert the course of justice through threats and intimidation are promptly arrested and prosecuted.
Speaking on the development, Ambassador Ray reiterated that no amount of intimidation would deter the pursuit of legal accountability, calling on the public to remain vigilant against sexual abuse and actively report perpetrators to dismantle the culture of silence surrounding sexual violence.
