OTUKPO, BENUE STATE — In a stinging rebuke of the Benue State government’s reactive approach to the relentless bloodshed in the North Central region, residents of the beleaguered Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA) have flatly rejected a ₦5 million cash donation and relief materials sent by Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The rejection follows a weekend of coordinated terror attacks by suspected armed herders between Friday, July 10, and Sunday, July 12, 2026, which left at least 20 people dead, including women and children, across several farming communities.

Spokespersons and political leaders from the area have made their message to the Government House in Makurdi crystal clear: “We are not interested in your money; we want our lives protected”.

A Weekend of Coordinated Carnage

According to local sources and security reports, the violence began on Friday, July 10, when armed assailants invaded farmlands in Akpachi village, Ugboju-Ehaje, hacking two farmers to death.

While local vigilantes and security agencies searched the surrounding bushes believing the threat had subsided, the terrorists struck again with guerrilla-style tactics at around 4:00 AM on Sunday. They stormed Otukpo-Nobi community, opening fire indiscriminately on sleeping residents.

THE VICTIMS OF THE OTUKPO ATTACKS:
• Akpachi Village (Ugboju-Ehaje): 2 farmers killed on Friday.
• Otukpo-Nobi Community: 16+ residents massacred in sleeping quarters on Sunday.
• Ondo Ugboju (Odo community): Fresh attacks mid-week claiming more lives.
• Displaced: Thousands of agrarian residents fleeing ancestral lands.

The onslaught triggered nationwide outrage, especially after grieving youths, pushed to their limit, took to the streets in protest. In a highly symbolic display of anger and despair, the youth carried the bloodied corpses of the victims directly to the palace of the Och’Idoma (the paramount ruler of the Idoma kingdom) during a church service on Sunday, demanding immediate action.

“We Want Protection, Not Coffins and Relief”

Following the outrage, Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the “barbaric” killings and announced a ₦5 million donation and emergency relief materials to support the displaced and grieving families.

However, the gesture was rejected by the locals.

Presenting the matter as one of urgent public importance on the floor of the Senate, the Minority Leader and Senator representing Benue South, Comrade Abba Moro, confirmed the community’s refusal of the financial aid.

“The people said they were not interested in his money; they were interested in their protection. Governors should be the first responders. Instead, they stay in the comfort of Government House, condemn the attacks, and make donations after people have died.”

Senator Abba Moro (Benue South)

Senator Moro vehemently argued that dismissing these massacres as mere “farmers-herders clashes” is a dangerous understatement. He described the violence as a systematic, coordinated campaign aimed at wiping out indigenous farming communities to execute land-grabbing agendas.

Amnesty International Sounds the Alarm

Reacting to the ongoing horror, human rights watchdog Amnesty International has called for an independent, impartial, and effective investigation into the security failures in Otukpo.

The organization pointed out that the visual of youth carrying corpses to the Och’Idoma’s palace is a stark warning that rural communities have had enough of empty government promises. Amnesty warned that the humanitarian crisis in Benue is rapidly spiraling out of control, with hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) languishing in camps without access to basic water, food, or medical care.

The Path Forward: Senate Demands Military Deployment

In response to the escalating crisis, the Nigerian Senate has directed the Federal Government to immediately deploy heavy security personnel and establish permanent military outposts in the flashpoints of Akpachi-Ugboju, Otukpo-Nobi, and Ondo Ugboju to forestall further attacks.

As the soil of Benue South drinks more blood of innocent farmers, the bold rejection of the state government’s ₦5 million donation by the Otukpo people stands as a historic turning point. It sends a clear message to political leaders across Nigeria: The primary purpose of government is the security of lives and property, and no amount of post-tragedy compensation can buy back lost lives.
