Loading ...ABUJA, NIGERIA — The worsening security crisis under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration reached the doorstep of Nigeria’s seat of power late Thursday night, as heavily armed Fulani militias launched a daring assault on the Mpape community within the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The attack occurred in a strategic gateway location situated just a short distance from the highbrow Maitama district and a major military barracks, highlighting the terrifying breakdown of the capital’s security architecture. The raid left a local private security guard dead, one resident hospitalized with severe gunshot injuries, and three citizens—including a local pastor—abducted into nearby forest networks.
Midnight Terror At Yellow House Layout
According to security sources and terrified local residents, a gang of approximately 10 heavily armed Fulani militia fighters stormed a newly developed residential grid known as the “Yellow House Layout” at approximately 11:00 PM on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
The militia initially targeted a specific private residence, attempting to breach the perimeter walls to execute a mass abduction. However, their operational plans were disrupted by the rapid mobilization and timely arrival of a police highway patrol team stationed within the district.
A fierce gun battle ensued between the law enforcement officers and the criminal gang, forcing the fighters to retreat from the primary target.

As the militia fighters were forced to pull back from the residential estate, they moved aggressively through the layout’s exit routes. They intercepted a local pastor who was driving home from a late-night assignment, forcing him out of his vehicle at gunpoint.
The gang also seized two additional residents who were walking along the road. The fleeing attackers commandeered the pastor’s vehicle to transport their captives toward the hilly forest terrain separating the FCT from Kaduna and Nasarawa states. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned on a dirt track within the neighborhood.
Traumatized residents reported that heavy, sustained gunfire echoed through the community for three hours, finally subsiding around 2:00 AM.
“We couldn’t sleep; it was three hours of pure panic,” a community leader told our reporter. “The gun battle was intense, and by morning, we found that our local security guard had been killed while trying to secure the layout.”

The audacity of the Mpape raid has intensified public criticism of the Federal Government’s domestic defense strategies. Regional experts note that armed Fulani militias have increasingly shifted their operations from rural agrarian fields in the Middle Belt to high-value suburban layouts surrounding Abuja, leveraging rugged hill terrains along the Bwari corridor to evade radar detection.
The fact that armed groups can confidently exchange gunfire within earsplit of a military facility demonstrates how bold these insurgent groups have become.
Efforts to get an official response from the FCT Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, could not be reached for comment, as phone calls and text inquiries regarding the command’s ongoing tracking operations went unanswered.
