KADUNA, NIGERIA — One year after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially commissioned the multi-billion naira Bola Ahmed Tinubu Specialist Hospital in Millennium City, Chikun Local Government Area, a fierce public debate has erupted over whether the state-of-the-art facility is actively serving the public or sitting as a deserted, locked monument.
While civic groups and some local residents claim that the 320-bed hospital remains locked, empty, and non-functional, the hospital’s management and the Kaduna State Government have countered these reports with statements detailing thousands of clinical treatments performed at the site.
The Core of the Controversy: “Under Lock and Key”?
The controversy initially began shortly after the grand presidential inauguration. Eyewitnesses and opposition figures raised alarms when vehicles, ambulances, and decorative temporary installations brought in for the commissioning vanished within days of the President’s departure.
Civic tracking organizations published reports pointing out that the massive infrastructure project remained locked and unavailable to patients months after the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Critics labeled the commissioning an “executive charade”, alleging that the multi-billion naira complex had been prematurely opened for political optics rather than actual healthcare delivery.
Residents expressed anger that the facility—conceived back in 2009 by former Governor Namadi Sambo and advanced by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai—was named after President Tinubu despite sitting completely idle.
Management Retaliates: “3,000 Patients Treated”
In a sharp rebuttal to claims that the facility has been abandoned to rodents and insects, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor Abdulkadir Musa, addressed journalists during a regional infrastructure tour.
According to the official brief, Professor Musa stated that the facility is functional and has successfully treated at least 3,000 patients since its launch. The hospital management highlighted the following operational features:
- Specialized Care: Active wings dedicated to maternal and child healthcare, a comprehensive oncology center, radiology, and a specialized Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
- Power Sufficiency: A 24/7 power supply configuration powered by massive solar grids, three backup generators, and a direct agreement with the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
- Regional Referral Hub: The hospital is serving as a tertiary referral hub across the North-West zone to systematically curb medical tourism abroad.
The Implementation Gap
The stark contradiction between independent civic oversight reports and official government statistics has raised eyebrows among healthcare analysts. Observers suggest that the hospital may be experiencing a phased, slow rollout due to the logistical challenges of fully staffing a massive 320-bed tertiary facility, leading to public perceptions of abandonment.
The Kaduna State Ministry of Information and Culture maintains that Governor Uba Sani’s administration successfully injected fresh momentum and state resources into the decades-long project to finally deliver it. However, civic groups insist that a full independent audit is necessary to confirm if the multi-billion naira medical asset is operating at its intended capacity.
