ABUJA, Nigeria — Reports have emerged detailing growing friction within the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) between the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and prominent activist Aisha Yesufu, one of his key allies during the 2023 election cycle.

The strain follows internal disputes during the party’s recent primaries in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Disagreements Over the FCT Senatorial Ticket

The rift centers on the selection process for the NDC’s FCT senatorial nomination:

  • Primary Process Grievances: Yesufu, who sought the party’s nomination for the FCT Senate seat, publicly criticized the NDC leadership—including National Leader Seriake Dickson—alleging that the primary process was bypassed without providing a level playing field for aspirants.
  • Leadership Consensus: Party officials revealed that Obi and party executives had initially urged Yesufu to contest for the Abaji/AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives. Yesufu declined the suggestion, insisting on running for the Senate.
  • Ticket Handover: The senatorial nomination was ultimately awarded to another aspirant, prompting public dissatisfaction from Yesufu and her supporters over party management.

Shift in 2027 Campaign Engagement

The fallout has altered Yesufu’s operational role within the wider presidential campaign:

  • Withdrawal from Tour Lineup: Yesufu confirmed she will not accompany Obi on nationwide campaign tours as she did during the 2023 presidential race.
  • Focus on Polling Unit Mobilization: She clarified that her primary focus for the 2027 election cycle will shift toward grassroots organization, voter education, and monitoring result collation at individual polling units.
  • Reaffirmation of Presidential Support: Despite her criticisms of the NDC’s internal administration, Yesufu has publicly urged her supporters to remain committed to defeating the ruling party and to back the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket under the NDC platform.
