KANO, NIGERIA — Security operatives have made a startling discovery in the Rimin Kebe area of Kano State, uncovering a network of underground tunnels and hidden bunkers used for large-scale drug storage.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) confirmed that the site was being used by criminal syndicates to stash narcotics away from the eyes of the law. During the raid, officers found evidence that people were actually living in these subterranean spaces, with beds and personal items recovered from the tunnels.
Deep-Seated Crisis
The discovery has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the extreme lengths drug traffickers are going to in order to evade detection. Authorities described the setup as “sophisticated,” noting that the tunnels were strategically located within a residential area to blend in.
“This is a wake-up call,” a senior security source stated. “We aren’t just dealing with street peddlers anymore; we are dealing with organized cartels using engineering to hide their activities.”
Demolition Underway
In a swift response, the Kano State government, in collaboration with the NDLEA, has deployed heavy machinery to the site. Demolition of the structures and the sealing of the tunnels began over the weekend to prevent the area from being reoccupied by criminals.
The NDLEA has vowed to intensify its “door-to-door” search in known flashpoints across the state to dismantle similar hidden facilities. Residents have been urged to report any suspicious construction or unusual movements in their neighborhoods to the nearest security post.
Urgent Action Needed
Kano has long struggled with a high rate of substance abuse, but the scale of this underground operation suggests the crisis has reached a dangerous new level. Community leaders are now calling for a permanent security presence in Rimin Kebe to ensure the neighborhood is fully purged of drug-related activities.
As the demolition continues, the NDLEA says several arrests have already been made in connection with the discovery, with more suspects expected to be picked up in the coming days.
