CALABAR, Nigeria — Police authorities in Cross River State have launched a manhunt for a suspect identified as Mr. Emmanuel Akposi following the death of his mother, Mrs. Atim Akposi, in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
According to community sources, the suspect set his mother on fire following persistent accusations of witchcraft prompted by declarations from local religious figures and seers.
Details of the Attack
Witnesses in the community reported that Emmanuel had repeatedly confronted his mother in public, claiming that prophecies from various pastors and seers identified her as being responsible for his personal setbacks and the death of his child.
The ongoing conflict escalated during a recent domestic dispute:
- Physical Assault: Emmanuel allegedly attempted to strangle his mother during an argument, but she managed to resist and break free.
- Arson Attack: Following her escape attempt, the suspect poured petrol on her, set her on fire, and fled the scene.
- Medical Emergency: The victim was initially rushed to a hospital in Akamkpa before being transferred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where she later succumbed to severe burn injuries.
Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement officers have opened a homicide investigation into the incident, with operational teams dispatched to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspect.
Police authorities have urged members of the public with relevant information regarding the location of Emmanuel Akposi to report to the nearest police division.
